Okay, I was looking at all the information to change my name and basically, I need to start with the DMV. Do you change your name before or after the wedding? If it's after, do you wait until after the honeymoon? I know I could have gotten a certified copy of my marriage license when we went to get it last week; so I could feasibly do all of that stuff beforehand, like the Wednesday or Thursday that I have off. Or I could do it Monday morning after the wedding before we head out for our honeymoon. I'm not sure when I'm supposed to do it.

I thought you were not actualy married untill the officiant that marrys you signs the marriage certificate and sends it in. Then you have to have that to change your license and SSC and so forth.

That's what I thought, which is why when they offered me the certified copy of marriage license I was a little baffled...I don't get it?:bbeek:

Yeah I dont get it either. A marriage license is o good if the officiant has not sighned it.

Your marriage license has to be signed before it is official. So you need to wait until after the wedding to change things around. ALso, make sure that all of your hotel, airline, rental car, ect reservations are in your maident name. This way when you show your ID they will match. I have heard of horror stories of couples missing their honeymooons because the woman used her married name on the flight reservations when her ID and passport were in her maiden name.

I couldn't technically change my name until after the honey moon because of the heightened security thing and my passport! I had to have the same name on my passport as my driver's license and in Canada when you change your name on your driver's they take it away and send you a new one. (until then you are stuck with a piece of paper!) So I guess if you plan on travelling outside of the US then you will probably not want to change it just yet incase all your info does not have the right corresponding names! Thats just my experience.

Here you have to have the signed marriage license filed through the court house and you have to get the official county file stamp stamped on your license before you can change anything. Plus you have to wait to get this back in the mail!

We just went and got our marriage license yesterday, she gave us a piece of paper that we have to bring to the wedding to be signed by the judge and the two witnesses and then send it back to the court house and then she sends us our marriage certificate. is anyone keeping there maiden name??? she asked me if i was changing my name or not.

I am changing mine. However, my mother has always kept her maiden name, and she has been married 3 times.

I think most women do it. Some women keep their maiden name for work; but in their private lives, they use their husband's last name. I changed mine when I got married, but I changed it right back after I got divorced.

I decided i should start looking into this today so i did some poking arround on the internet and i thought i would share what i found because i know there are some other girls on OneWed from Ontario.
They had a name change wizard that would ask you a number of questions and either send you to the form you needed online so you could print it off and send it in or to the number to call to request that the forms be sent to you. It's pretty helpfull since i have no idea what i need to do.

I was looking at our license and there isn't any place for the officiant to sign it. He signs a little piece of paper that is separate and gets sent in, but the license itself doesn't get signed. There also isn't anywhere that Jason and I sign or our witnesses...I'm totally weirded out by this. Oh and when we went to get the license, we had to swear that we weren't related, weren't under the influence of any alcohol/illegal substances, and...this is the kicker...we didn't have a communicable or possibly communicable form of syphillis...WHAT? Who asks that anymore? I could see maybe asking about AIDS or something, but syphillis? Now don't get me wrong, I know it's still out there, but it's not nearly as prevelant as a million other STDs. That was so weird. To top it off, the only signature that does go on our marriage certificate was the clerk of the probate court. This woman was so old that Jason joked that she babysat dinosaurs in her time! She wrote like a two year old...that's nice isn't it? blah

Well I don't know about things in Ohio but when I got married there was a place for the official to sign the marriage licence, we didn't have to have witnesses sign, but I know some states and counties that do.
As for when to change your name, you will have to wait until after the wedding and send in the license and get back a certified copy of the 'marriage certificate' the frameable one with the state seal. Then you can take that to your local Social Security office and the DMV and so on.

We also had to sign a similar thing stating we were not each other's cousin/aunt/uncle/uncle's pets dogs sister/ etc. And the disease thing was in there as well if I remember correctly! I was laughing as the lady read it to us and then she gave me a dirty look like I wasnt taking it seriously! I wanted to ask her how backwoods hick she thought we were. Hello Lady, my DH is from Germany, I was born and raised in CANADA!! He is NOT my brother or even my cousin!! And honestly, the way its written it makes it sound so ridiculous how can a person not have a chuckle about it! And I DO TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY! Lol
