View Full Version : Bugs in your home

We just moved into our new apartment. I walked into the sunroom this morning and saw a bunch of dead wormy bugs on the floor. I also found a small bug (that was dying) in our bedroom. Our apartment was sprayed just a few days ago so that could be why bugs are appearing. We also live in the Amazon, you could say, so that could be why too. Hardly any bugs in the fall/winter, I'm thinking. I just don't like bugs; Im scared to death of roaches. So, what bugs come into your home and which ones bug you? :)

We had lots of these centipedes in our last apartment, but they were like the momma ones, huge! Looked like a bug with hair! I had never seen one before, until I came to Georgia.

*shudder* We get carpet beetles.
http://www.bugclinic.com/Black%20Carpet%20Beetle.jpg
They are absolutely disgusting. They're tiny, they don't get bigger than about 2-3mm. But they crawl aroud in the edges of the carpet and *barf*
I vacuum like mad to get rid of them, and I will be spraying pretty soon. But in order to TOTALLY get rid of them, I have to pull up the carpet at all corner/edges, spray, do it again in a few days, and then put the carpet back down. I'm sorry... if I owned the home, sure, but I rent. And they stay put at the corners/edges, and can't fly or climb, so I'm ok with them.

We once had a silverfish problem. They can move!!!
The landlord had sprayed but hadn't sprayed all the apartments and so the problem continued until he did that. When we packed up to move, I found some under my water bed bladder. I can't even begin to tell you how much that freaked me out! Apparently they love both heat and moisture.
In this place, we see the occasional cricket looking/ black beatle type thing. They must love moisture too because I normally see them in the bathroom (first thing in the morning!)
Did I mention that we saw a mouse in the house that we bought? LOL The owner says that she had never had a problem before and there was very little evidence of mouse droppings but we got a 12 month extermination contract with the sale of the house. The first thing we will do when we move in is to change the locks and put down mouse traps (just in case!!!)

Ewww grody. I have no idea why I opened this thread...
Either way, since we live on the water, if we get crawling insects it's because we brought them on in a costco box or something.
For other things.. we get spiders. Lots of spiders. I made some screens for our windows, so now there aren't very many spiders that come into the house, but during peak spider season, I usually end up walking though a web on my way in or out of the house about once a week.
I think these are them

We have the same problem (not those bugs, but renting). We would LOVE to just bomb the whole house, but it's not exactly our responsibility. We are planning on buying a home within the next 6 months, though, so hopefully this is our last buggy summer. Until then, I will just keep this handy:

It's my trusty bug vacuum. Whenever I see one-usually spiders-I suck it up and save it for DH to dispose of. It doesn't kill them-just traps them, so he can put them outside and I don't have to feel like a killer, OR deal with having bugs near me. It's one of my favorite household gadgets. :winktongue:

I want one, too cool! I hate picking up bugs with tissue/paper towels because of the crunch sound, yuck!

They are all over. Just look for "backyard bug safari vacuum." You should be able to get it for well under $20. I got it out of a mail order catalog for like $10 I think.

I have NEVER seen/heard of this thing! I am a devout scoop-the-bug-up-and-put-it-back-outside person. Even in my classroom, I tell the kids: "If you ever see a bug, do NOT kill it. Let me know and we'll save it." They are really good about that too :)
I will definitely be looking for one of those vacuums!!! Thank you!

I live in the Cleveland, Ohio area & we don't have too many bugs since they die over the winter. Ants are probably the biggest problem. When we vacation down south I can't stand the c. roaches. When we go to Kiawah Island in SC they are really bad.

This thread gives me the creepy-crawlies!! We've mostly just got ants and some little fly bugs. At our apartment we had a couple silverfish and spiders. It was weird, when I cleaned the bathroom here, a bunch of spiders appeared after that.
I'm not really too afraid of spiders... unless it would happen to get on me, then I'd freak out. So I don't really like to kill them... I just let them go on their way, which probably isn't the best thing to do, either, 'cause it's still in the house. I need one of those bug sucker things, I guess.

It depends on the bug.
Silverfish-die sucker
Misquitos-ditto
centipides-yuck
Spiders- Black widows die, brown recluse-die
may flies-die
praying mantis- are carried gently to a tree and left to live in peace
lady bugs- They drive me crazy but I can't bring myself to do them any harm.
crickets- drive me nuts but they get sent outside

Yeah, and poisonous snakes. Usually if it gets cold enough they die off for a little while in the winter. Most of the time they are outside in wood piles but for some reason they like my garage and basement.
I just commited mass murder the other day when I cleaned out the garage. I vacumed up all spider webs and egg sacks indiscriminatly. I didn't want any of them thinking they could build webs on my new baby.

We don't get many bugs in my mom's house except the occasional spider (well, and the horrible mosquitos that just KNOW when a door is being opened!) but right now we're dealing with a mouse issue, ick. Never in the 22 years we've lived here has there been a mouse. Gross gross.

Ok...between the snake post and now this...I think I may have to stick to "Bride Chat" - much safer. There are some things you just don't need to see a visual for.
BTW - I get the occasional spiders, mosquitos and maybe a beetle here and there. Nothing too nasty, but nontheless, gross. :worm: <---I get worms too, when it rains...they too are gross. Animals should have 2 or 4 legs..its a good safe number. Anymore or anyless usually makes me cringe.
I gotta get me one of those bug sucker upper thingies! Since we've moved into our apartment I've seen one roach and 2 silverfish when summer hit and it started raining. No biggie. They exterminate 4 times a year here and they have a non toxic organic option so I'm pleased!
