Ladies, I know this is pretty much completely off-topic but I am so excited I have to share.

This evening, DH and I became the proud owners of a new Canon 5D. For those of you not in the know, it's a pretty spiffy (although not quite the spiffiest) DSLR camera. The best part? It's full-frame, so we can actually get to use all of our lenses the way they're supposed to be used now.

Sweeeeet!

And while we were on a shopping spree, our finance department (that would be me) said what the hell...let's buy that flash DH has been drooling over, too. So we're getting a Canon 580X flash to go along with the 5D.

This flash offers you a crazy amount of control over the angle of the light and intensity...so we are pretty excited about that!

I am so, so excited about these because we've been renting them a weekend at a time for the past few months now anyway...and the cost difference between buying them outright vs renting them for the weddings we've already booked is pretty much a break even. So naturally, we will say GOODBYE to the rental man. Except when we need this baby, which is almost always:

I was really, really close to buying this, but for the time being, it's still cheaper just to rent it as we need it. And the bill was starting to get out of control. Next time, rental man, next time...

This concludes our photography gear porn message. Your regularly scheduled program will resume immediately. :D

"photography gear porn"

I would love to have a nice DSLR, but I don't have the money to spend on one right now ... plus I don't really "need" it since it is pretty much just a hobby now.

Congrats on the new gear!

I am still trying to sell the rest of my old stuff; finally sold both film camera kits!

Totally envious!

I obviously don't need a 5D either, since as weblady said, it's a hobby. I can still dream, though, right???

I think I'll have to settle for the XSi for my next camera purchase.

A family friend told me to put the camera I want on my wedding registry which at the time was the Nikon D300 but now they have the D700 full frame. My FH told me "You are suppose to put that on our list so he can buy it" He is totally serious :bbeek:. I'm not sure if I should go for the 300 or be selfish and go for the 700 LOL.

Did you get a vertical grip? :D

My next lens is the 70-200mm also!!!

Haha. Doo itttt!

We have had really bad luck with grips (one of them made a camera freak out and turn off inexplicably)...so no. :snide:

It was really hard not to get the 70-200. We use it for every wedding and DH would loooove to have it around for everyday use.

I have never used it...I won't rent it because then I will want it SOOOO bad. I have snapped a photo on a friends camera with it. That sucker is heavy but man I want it so bad.

Well do a few more weddings to pay off the 5D then you can work on getting the lens. :)

Just curious what are the best sites to rent glass?

I have heard good things about rentglass.com but we've never used them. We have a local guy who does it a lot cheaper. Although we have to drive 20 minutes there and back, both to get it and pick it up, so if gas prices get much worse, it will be pretty much the same and we'll probably just rent online to save ourselves the trouble.
