I found out on a Sims forum about a potentially harmful program EA Games has been including in their recent expansions. Thanks EA.

I go to uninstall the program, thinking it will solve some of the problems my lappy has been having lately.

When I restart my computer, I get a loving message from Toshiba upon start up saying that I need to backup my files immediately before the hard drive crashes, which apparantly is "imminent".

I rush to Wal-Mart to pick up blank CDs to back up my info on. Well, windows backup creators does not want to put my info on the CDs for some reason. I thought it was my disk drive, but it played a music CD just fine.

So now I'm doing about 8 hours worth of backup for my files into a folder and will attempt to move it onto the disk when it's done, which will probably be another 8 hours worth. And I'm afraid to shut my laptop off now in case it won't start up again.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr I am so annoyed about this! *bangs head on computer desk*

The problem is that I also download custom content, which is more than likely not the problem (generally if it does cause a problem it's within game and it's fine after I delete the file), but I could see EA trying to pull something like tell me that's what the problem is, not their stupid program. :irked:

you need external hard drive, and then do disk recovery from recovery CD provided with the laptop

All I can say is, "I'm really really sorry!". I hope it turns out okay. :ooh:

I'm making a backup disk of my important docs atm. Neko helped me determine in livechat that I need a new harddrive and she and acidcookie helped me figure out where and what to look for, so I'm on the hunt. Depending on what I get, this could be a blessing in disguise- faster comp!

Don't forget to backup your favorites. I lost all of my links once this way.

Thanks! My dad's helping me out with this and he recommended it too. I'm finishing backing up files before I meet with him in an hour or two so I'll make sure to do it.

Well actualy if you read the small print EA puts on their games, especialy the Sims, about custom content, and especially if it comes from another site then theirs. That's the catch, unfournately.
I've downloaded custom content before for the Sims, and my virus scanner has caught a few bugs.

Yeah, you have to be careful what you download.. I would never download from their main site, though! o.o; I'd have to dig to get anything good... But i have also gotten viruses from downloading from places i didn't know. Learned my lesson real quick!! :D You should be fine if you stick with modthesims2.com and a couple others (not counting TSR, that site is evil) Matty. :D

TSR is the DEVIL!

That said, IT'S FIXED and running great! I'm afraid to reinstall my sims at the moment though. I think I'm gonna get an external harddrive for that purpose.

Thanks for your support everyone!

have you try to reinstall your operating system? It usually will solve the problem.

Update:
Found out through various forums that installing and playing sims from an external harddrive is not the best idea. My dad partitioned the drive so I'm installing the games into the partition.

Kawinan: I had done that about six months ago when it crashed last. This time it warned me to replace the harddrive, so that's what we did. Unfortunately we couldn't install the old operating system because the restart disk didn't recognize the computer (thanks to the new harddrive), so my dad installed XP Pro OES and now I have XP pro without the miscellaneous programs I don't want/need.

Edit: Forgot to add, I think i'll be avoiding custom content for a while. But, as Neko said, we'll see how long that lasts. I think with all my EPs I'll be happy for a year or so until Sims 3 comes out.
