We went out for a pet sitting job tonight, and as we got out of the car, we noticed one of the dogs was acting very strange. Just in front of FH was this:

Blurry picture (taken from inside the house). This snake is EASILY 6 feet long. I couldn't even get the whole thing in the picture.

Nasty! I hate snakes. I remember as a kid when we lived in NC. My sister and I were roasting marshmellows with one of the people we lived with at the time. My mom and his wife we in the house with the Avon lady. When the Avon lady came out and turned on her car lights there stretched across a double wide drive way was a HUGE snake. The guy we were with cut it up ( for some reason ) and then went to pick it up to get rid of it but he grabbed the wrong end. His hand got knicked by the snakes tooth. He ended up in the hospital. I never liked snakes any way but after that I hated them even more.

Did you RUN?????

We were too close for any sudden movements. If it hadn't been for the dog acting so strangely, FH would've stepped right on it. It was next to their car, so we had to ease around the other side of the car with their dog in tow.

After we got all of their dogs inside safely, the snake slithered away. FH was looking for something to kill it with but couldn't find anything in time. Scary!

I don't mind the king snakes and rat snakes, but rattle snakes... UGH!!!!

Eek! I'm not one for violence, but I would've been totally cool with the idea of chopping this bad boy's head off. It's too close to people and animals for my liking.

oh hell no! my phobia is snakes! i'm terrified. i wont even touch a picture of a snake. i wont shake anyone's hand who has just touched a snake. i passed out in 7th grade because my classmate thought it would be funny to put a snake right above my head and in my bio textbook in 10th grade, there was a pic of a snake. i never read anything on that page. i ended up taping 2 of the pages together so i would never have to accidentally touch the page with the picture of the snake in it. i also refused to kiss my husband when we were first dating and i found out he had eaten a snake when he was stationed in the philippines. i'm not sure why i'm afraid of snakes but i am. i think it's something about the pattern of their skin that freaks me out. my mom asked if i would like to get help and i said "why would i wanna touch something i'm afraid of???" i'm pretty sure if i had walked out and found that thing infront of me, i would cry and then pass out... again!

my dog kai pai is such a little dog. my sister had him at her apartment once and they walked outside and there was a snake except for kai pai wasn't acting like he wanted to warn my sister. instead he had his paw up like he was gonna pounce on it! luckily leslie grabbed him and ran off. she's scared of snakes too.... glad to know i'm not the only one.

sometimes i wish i wasnt so ridiculously scared of snakes. but at the same time i dont wanna touch them or have anything to do with them. i just wish reptiles dont exist.... yeah i know i sound ridiculous. that's what vic always tells me

Actually, from the pictures it looks like a fine, healthy specimen of a diamondback rattlesnake. I didn't know you guys had those down in Georgia, I thought they were more a western type snake.

Very glad you and your dogs got in the house safely! It's kind of huge for a rattlensnake, though, you might want to call your local snake guy (your animal control people should know who that is) and let him know that a huge rattle snake is hanging around. The snake guy will come and re-locate it away from people.

Why kill it? I know it COULD harm you, but it is in IT'S territory, which we are destroying. These are the things we need to take into consideration when moving to certain areas.

I would def. call and have it moved away though. I am glad you weren't harmed. That looks like one of the more dangerous species, if I am not mistaken.

Yeah, we always have the camera out on the way to their house. We had just seen some fox squirrels up the road. Good thing for a powerful zoom, though! That is one snake I'm not getting close to.

It's a timber rattler (also known as a canebreak/canebrake.) They average 3-4 feet but can grow to around 6 feet. This one is about 6 feet. Very rare.

This snake has been aggressive to the people that live there. They have lived there for about five years, and the rattlers have always been on the back side of their property (lots of acreage, far away from the house) until now.

We found the den yesterday, and it is only a few yards from the house. This is at least the second time the snake has been within a few feet of the house (last time it was only a foot from the house.)

If this snake were to bite someone, they most likely would not make it to the hospital in time. They live a long way from the hospital.

The only option is for removal is animal control, and they will not go out that far.

EEK! I know I'm not a big fan of snakes either, I know they provide free rodent exterminations:grinhappy: But I think I'd take a few rodents over a big ole snake like that.
When we lived in our old house my mom was in the kitchen on the phone...it was sometime in the summer (don't remember exactly) and the sun was going down....well she said she was looking out the window and saw something move out of the corner of her eye so she looked and said her first thought was "oh, look how pretty" B/c the suns rays were shining off of "something" really colorful....when it registered what exactly she was seeing she hollard for my dad....who went out on the porch and shot the head off of a 6ft+ rattlesnake! the only way we knw it was longer than six ft is b/c we know a guy that removes problem snakes from peoples yards and he uses the skins for belts, hat bands, wallets etc. (sorry if this offends anyone just stating a fact) so my dad called him to come get the snake and when he picked it up by the tail and held it up in the air (at arms length and above his head it was still hanging on the ground!) my Dad wouldn't have shot it (theres been plenty of times he's caught and released a variety of snakes, but since we had animals, cats & dogs he didn't want to take the chance with a snake THAT big.

forget animal control if they wont go out that far. if that thing was in MY property and it poses a danger to me or my family or pets and the hospital is far, then rescuing it is going to be the least of my worries. :bbeek:

A few weeks ago my dad found a snake in the machine shed. He didn't want to kill it because they eat mice, but he also didn't want to come up on it in the dark. These are not poisinous, but still I hate them. So he did kill it and it was in front of the shed in the gravel. I had been walking back and forth between the house as we were getting stuff ready to leave. then we both went to walk to the house and my dad stopped and went 'woah' as there was another snake in the yard. He killed that one too. Guys at work said he shouldn't have killed them. I on the other hand would kill it. I HATE them. I don't care if they are harmless. I mean these will still snap at you. The thing that freaked me out is I had just walked through that grass many times and I had shorts on!! My dad said he thinks there is still another one around because he found a snake skin the other day. ick.

Yeah, we definitely wouldn't kill it if it wasn't a threat to our safety and to the safety of the animals we are caring for there. I love kingsnakes and other harmless snakes, but having such dangerous snakes so close to the house that we have trouble getting from car to house is a problem.

Australia’s inland Taipan snake is the world’s deadliest snake. The Taipan snake has a bite which is 50 times more toxic than a cobra’s. It also easily comes out tops in terms of overall “killing power” which is measured in terms of its aggressiveness, length of its fangs, amount of venom injected per bite etc etc.. I think you get the idea. However, to be fair to ALL snakes, deaths by snakebite are rarer than deaths by lightning strike. Go play golf when a thunderstorm nears, mate.

Mom calls me the snake charmer. When I was about 3 months old she had me laying on a blanket while she hung out the wash. She said she heard me cooing and looked over and there I was eyeball to eyeball with a rattler. She couldn't scream or anything because if I moved she was afraid that the snake would strike. We sat there for a few minutes till it lowered it's head and slithered away.
I've also had encounters with copperheads, cotton mouths, and lots of black snakes. They just look at me and then crawl away.
