View Full Version : I got a job...my first...ever.
Yes, I'm 24 and I've never had a "real" job. I've always managed to get by with a handful of steady babysitting jobs. Then we moved into Houston! I've been talking about applying here and there all summer, but I never actually applied. Then yesterday we were eating at a small veggie restaurant and I saw a "now hiring" sign. I asked for an application, brought it back today, talked a bit with the manager, and got hired. Talk about a whirlwind. I go in tomorrow from 10 am - 3 pm for training. Wooohooo.
Cool! I hope that you have a great 1st day!

Holy cow, that was fast!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
On another note, I cannot imagine having been without a job like that. I was living on my ownandworking full time when I was 16!
Yeah, it's been driving me crazy and I have felt like such a helpless bum! LOL. Up until 2 years ago I did the caregiver thing for my mom and then my grandma so I didn't have much time for work, but I've just been loving being lazy for the last two years. :grinhappy:

No doubt, I went in for my first interview on the last day of 8th grade! Not mean to be disparaging to the OP, just can't imagine! Although at the same time I'm 25 and even though I'd been working jobs till grad school I've never had a permanent job or a career as I've been in school this whole. time. Don't get a Ph.D. Don't! RUN!
Ahem.
CONGRATS!! Always good to work in a place you enjoy going to.

I love my job and it's driving me crazy not being able to work at the moment. I miss the Girls at work like mad. But they keep me informed with all the Gossip by Text. :winktongue:

Yeah like taxes and waking up early to trudge to work :)
Seriously, congrats! You are going to enjoy having some money in your account and as such, some financial independence.

Congrats! A first "real" job is always exciting! I'm still at my 1st real job now two years & some odd mths later:) my first ever job was working for my dad after school & on weekends in our convience store, after I graduated (& we closed the store due to my dads ill health) I got a paying job at another gas station down the road, I was there for two years, never got a raise & all the crappy hours b/c I didnt have "a family to support & kids". I got outta there before I turned 21 b/c I didn't want to have to work a night shift alone!
I started working with my now FH sister at a car dealership in the warehouse, talk about a work out! Lifting bumpers, hoods, side panels, bed liners, tires, wheels & all types of little odd & end pieces that need replacing on vehicles. That went on for almost a year when I realized I didn't want to be doing that when I was 30....so I got a temp position at a heat treatment place doing payroll & quotes; six mths later I finally got hired on at the County Revenue Office (where I work now) I took a pay cut coming here but there is more stability & better hours & benefits. Nt sure if I stay indefinatley but I like the work right now.
As Elizabeth said, enjoy the additions to your account and the financial freedom it will give you!

Congrats and good luck with the training. Hopefully it's better for you than my first job at McDonalds (at age 16). That's very cool that they hired you so quickly.

congrats on your job
let us know how it goes
Thanks for the congrats ladies. Today was good. It was just a lot to take in, ya know. I have one more training shift and then I'm on my own. That's what's worrying me! I don't think I'm going to be ready by then, but we'll see. I sure hope that I am. I just don't see how I'm ever going to be able to do all that by myself! LOL It was packed today, but I think I'm mostly going to be working nights so the lunch rush crowd won't be an issue.

It's called Field of Greens and it's on West Alabama really close to Whole Foods. The food's really good. It's vegan/vegetarian/pescetarian and the menu is huge so there's something for everybody.

I know it can be very daunting starting a New Job. I train up the Newbies where i work as a Room Maid in a Hotel. They get into a bit of a Tizzy about where things go in the room, what Chemicals to use on what surface, how many towels etc.
Then all of a sudden it "Clicks" and they are away doing their own rooms and the standard of cleaning is up there with the rest of us.
At least they are easing you in by not throwing you in the Deep End with the Lunchtime rush. You'll be the running the place before you know it :winktongue:
Thank you!!! I need all the encouragement I can get. Besides, if I crash and burn then I will be too embarrassed to go back to my favorite restaurant. Haha. I can't let that happen!

is it a table service restaurant, or like a counter-service place?
i've worked in restaurants for 8 years, it can be tough but it's definitely never boring, lol! the best advice i can give you is to just treat people as though they are guests in your own home- and you'll be great!
It's counter service for the most part. They order at the counter and then we bring it out to them. It probably seats about 75 people. There's one person in the front of the restaurant. That person has to take orders & payments, answer phones for call in orders, pull food, take the food out to customers & to the customers that order from next door at the tea house, clean off tables, and scrape plates. There's a few other random things too. It'd under new management and Chad thinks that they're trying to be cheap and understaff the place. I'm starting to agree. :snide:

Best of luck to you there! Hopefully the staff and customers are nice enough to make it worth while.
As for me, I avoid food service. I did waitressing as well as various fast food for several years and can't stand it haha.
Hehe. That leads to another problem. I'm the only person in the front and the 3 cooks only speak Chinese! :bbeek: LOL. I don't know what I'm going to do when the manager isn't there and I have an issue with food or something!

Oh my....
Hmm you could always get creative with Google language tools and print out some cards in Chinese, haha. "This is the wrong order." "Please remake this." "Please don't say bad things about me in Chinese."
Not sure they'd appreciate it ;), but hmm. That is a tough one.

Hehe!
