OMG I LOVE Rome!!!!

I went there back in 1994, But unfortunately it was with the Ex-Husband and he got custody of all the photos.

We got a coach from London and drove all the way to Italy. Took 24 Hours but it was Brilliant!! I have never had such a ball.
If you love History and Italian Food then you must go.
We stayed in a town called Fiuggi, just outside Rome (16 Coaches made the Trip from the UK) We also did a tour of Rome, Pompeii, Sorento, Naples, Isle Of Capri. I've always wanted to go back and do Florence, Pisa, Venice and Herculanium.

For me the Highlight was Pompeii. To think what those poor souls went through was chilling to the bone. Hence i want to see Herculanium if we ever go back.

For me i loved the climate (was 110F in the Shade in Naples) the culture, the people, the history and of course the food was to die for.
Sorrento has some of the best pizza parlours ever.

Rome itself has some amazing sights.

The Trevi Fountain.
A traditional legend holds that if visitors throw a coin into the fountain, they are ensured a return to Rome. Among those who are unaware that the "three coins" of "Three Coins In The Fountain" were thrown by three different individuals, a reported current interpretation is that two coins will lead to a new romance and three will ensure either a marriage or divorce. A reported current version of this legend is that it is lucky to throw three coins with one's right hand over one's left shoulder into the Trevi Fountain.

If you decide to go into The Vatican. Make sure you cover up. I lined up and got to the front of the queue to be told that my Shoulders should be covered. I was wearing a Sleeveless Top at the time. So i went and bought a T-shirt and rejoined the queue.
When i got back to the coach, EVERYONE had the same T-shirt on. Was slightly miffed to say the least LOL.

You are gonna Love it. :D

No, but I got to live in an apartment in Florence for a week so if you need advice on other Italian areas ... ;) Man was it neat to have a key to one of those buildings like I lived there for real hehe.

Sooo jealous!! My brother (the brat) got to do a study abroad class in Italy for college - not sure what that had to do with his Comp Sci/Math majors, but oh well. :) I will ask him for some recommendations for you!

Rome is beautiful and you are going to have a good time. My only advice to you is don't plan anything. Allow yourself to get lost in the city and immerse yourself in local culture. Everyone is really friendly and speaks better English than Americans so you will have no toruble there. Unfortunatlely you will have your man there because the men in Italy are gorgeous:D

That might be a good thing. Florence is a lot less touristy than what I've heard Rome to be. When I was in Florence I actually had to attempt to converse in Italian more than I expected. In any case, I was there for a conference and my walks to the conference center (an old cool fortress!!) were often plagued with cat calls and men trying to get my attention. One man even starting walking with me trying to get me to go out with him and asking where I lived etc. And then I got lost on my way home bc oh my gosh those streets!! Being a blonde American girl actually drew a little too much attention and really not in a way I desired. Eventually I switched to speaking German and said that I had come from Germany, not America and pretended I knew minimal English.

ha ha sure....Do you know where you are staying yet? It is cold at that time of the year. But the great thing is it is not that crowded! Are you flying in and out of Rome?

The buses in Rome are SUPER easy to figure out as is most of Italy. We are not the type of travelers to spend a lot of time reading etc. But I do suggest budgeting a lot of time for the Vatican and the ruins area. We walked A LOT of it. I also suggest pre-mapping out where you want to go. A ton of it is right in the same area.

The Trevi Fountain was cool, but not like it is in the movies :)

Just go...have fun...eat a TON....get a good street map so you can get your self around town!!!

I love Rome I ve been there two years ago, its a living ancient city.
Dont miss the Vatican, it worths all the wait, go early in the morning to avoid big queue.
Also the Piazza di Venezia and Fontana di Trevi as someone mentioned before.
And dont miss the Roman Forum.
All the city is like a museum you wont know where to look first.
Also the San Pedro church is something really amazing if you have someone to guide you. Imagine, it looks like you are in a different place everytime you change your view angle. And it has many detail really worthing it.

If you have the time, visit Pompeii, many people loved it, I didnt get that excited cause I have seen so many places like this in Greece. The only thing that didnt excite me was that I saw many grecian style imitation buildings, oh well.
Rome has the best food, get italian margherita pizza you wont believe its really pizza, no fat!!
And the best ice cream!

Unfortunately I cant post pics cause I didnt have my digital camera back then and I only have traditional photos, and no scanner.

I spoke spanish in rome and it went pretty well cause spanish and italian are similar(well kind of).

I will go again definately!

The place I dont want to visit again is Venice. No I didnt like it, it didnt look romantic to me, it looks like an abandoned city falling down.

In my opinion Rome is far more romantic.

My DH niece just came back from a trip to Rome, she actually said it was very dirty and that the people there don't like Americans.. But it was a school function so i'm sure she didn't get around much. But hey fit me in the suit case to.. I can only dream of going to the Vatican....
