View Full Version : Scrabble Pendants as Bridal Shower Gifts?

Hello Ladies,

I am planning a bridal shower for a very good friend of mine. This will be my 1st time as a bridesmaid, so I'm hoping that I can do the best job I can. We were childhood friends, and growing up, one of our favorite things to do was play Scrabble. Now that I am involved in the bridal party planning, I wanted to incorporate that aspect into the shower.

After doing some research, I found this site that made "Paper Pendants" from Scrabble tiles! :D I was ecstatic, but some of the other girls wanted to do something else.....like.....personalized flip flops :bbeek:

http://bitesizecards.com/images/DSC02126.JPG

Im trying to convince the girls that these pendants have sentimental and nostalgic value, but two of the girls won't budge.

So, these pendants are $14 each and come with a gift box & ribbon. There will be about 50 guests at the shower, and uhh if i multiplied 50 by 14, thats a pretty hefty number. lol. I decided to contact the owner of the site, and explained my situation. She told me that she typically sells to boutiques at a wholesale price of $7 !!! She was willing to work with me and arrange these pendants for me at $8.50 each since i was placing a large order.

Now the personalized flip flops are $11.50 a pair and do not arrive in any gift packaging. That would mean that i would have to buy gift bags, tissue paper, tags and package it myself.

The girls insist that we'll get "more bang for our buck" when we buy the flips flops, but I feel that the pendants are more meaningful, and with the sharp discount -- they are a much better deal.

Any advice?

I don't really understand the other girls. If it was me, I would prefer to have a pendant.

Pssssst - they have a LOT of those scrabble pendants at ETSY - check it out, you may just be able to make an even better deal - http://www.etsy.com/search_results.php?search_query=scrabble+pendant&search_type=tag_title&page=1&order=price_asc&min=&max=

I say go with the Scrabble Pendants. I've personally never seen anything like them before. So in my eyes those are rare and therefore more special.

You can get Flip-flops anywhere and at any time. Plus at least the Pendants are "One Size Fits All"

Have you thought about trying to make pendants just like this? I don't think it'd be too difficult.

I would TOTALLY rather have a cute pendant instead of flipflops... I don't even wear flipflops!

How many girls are involved with this? Depending on how many, you could do a vote of some sort and let the vote go. Point out that the tiles are cheaper, already packaged, and are more unique, not to mention having sentimental value. If they still don't listen, filibuster!

I assume we are talking about this plastic/rubber flipflops that look really cute on 8 year olds? Seriously though play the the value angle, that they are already wrapped, and that it is more unique.

WEll, I'm a total sucker for sentiment so I LOVE the pendant idea. Plus it seems to me the pendants are "One Size Fits All"...doing flip flops would require getting everyone's shoe size, wouldn't it? (Or am I missing something?)

I think the pendants are a nice idea and fairly unique too. I do love flip flops, but the pendants are nice and as long as the design suited me, I'd wear that too :)

If it is cheaper and you are paying then do that! Who are the other girls that are protesting?

I like the scrabble idea better, too. It is cute. Like some one else said, not everyone likes flip flops. (In fact, I thought of doing them for my bridesmaids, but my sister really doesn't like them, so I'm not.) Plus, flip flops are typically seasonal (at least here in MN they are).

I love flip-flops but I would have to go with the pendants. They are very unique. And I love the sentiment behind them. And Esty even has Vera Bradley scrabble pendants.

I'm so glad that all of you agree that the pendants are a better idea :D

I'll make sure to mention the fact that it would be alot easier to purchase the pendants that would be one size fits all as opposed to the flip flops which would require different sizing

I'll get back to you ladies soon and tell you if i was able to persuade the other two *#&@* :grinhappy:

Good. And if they don't believe you then send them here to read this thread.
The Pendants are a lot better.

I think the sandals idea would not work out too well. Sometimes they rub peoples feet and give them blisters, then they would never wear them and what use is that!

I love the pendents. They are unique and very pretty, plus cheap! How could they pass?:irked:

I think the scrabble pendants are awesome. I'm also betting they would be super easy to make. Find an old scrabble game and a jar of the glossy modge podge and you would be good to go. I think I might try to make one myself, just to see how it turns out.

When I saw this thread I was like... Eh. Who would want a stupid Scrabble pendant?! THEN I clicked on the link and was like, "Yes! I would want a scrabble pendant!" Did your cohorts actually SEE the product? Because honestly, I thought it was lame until I looked at them. And flip-flops? They're seasonal in WI, too, and not everybody can wear them. Let us know how your throw-down goes! We want Scrabble pendants!!!

Yes, there are lots of great scrabble tile pendants on Etsy!!!

Really cute, I purchased a tutorial from TheScrabbleGal and am making them at my wedding shower! I purchased a bundle that even has instructions for how to make them with photos. I'm hoping everyone will really enjoy having these cute keepsakes. You can make about 100 of them for $15-$20, so this is the way to go if you are on a budget and/or want to have a fun little activity for everyone.

Check out her shop, she is a total sweetheart:

Those other girls are insane. There is no way people would rather have flip flops!

The scrabble pendants are cute and artsy. But I can understand if some of your girls might not like it. Depending on the designs, some of the designs look too girlie.. more for teenagers.. it's not elegant.

But you're the bride.. it's your shower , so you decide :)

I think the scrabble tile pendants would be nicer too, than flip flops. You could always make your own pendants, you know, if you're the creative type. There's a tutorial or two online that can show you how to do it and it isn't hard, the main thing is buying the right type of paper glue that dries clear.
