What i did to start was get lots of bridal magazines and look at the dresses there. Also I have been visiting local bridal shops to try on a few and to get catalogs to look at. I also watch for sales at any of the local shops. Get on mailing lists so you can get notices of sales in the mail. Once you find styles you like or designers you like start looking on the web. Or just pick designers and look at their sites. pretty soon you will find a sort of style that you like.

I also got wedding magazines so that I could look at the dress styles. In addition, I did a lot of searching at different styles online. If you have a David's Bridal in your area I would encourage you to go there to make an appointment for another day. When I went they gave me a few magazines full of wedding dresses, tuxedos, and bridesmaids dresses. Also look at their website. Good Luck-you have a lot of choices!

Thats what i did. I looked at soooo many magazines and found the styles I liked the best. Like I knew I wanted strapless, not a lot of detail, and pick ups. Then went to local shops and of course davids bridal. When I went in I already knew the type I was looking for so it made it a lot easier and not as overwhelming.

I went to a few stores being very open minded. When asked what kind of dress I wanted, I pretty mich said that I was willing to try anything. I went to several stores, and almsot picked out my dress at Alfred Angelo, but on the way from the store I saw another shop that a friend mentioned and walked in and found the one I actually bought.
But having an open mind really helped, because if I gave limitations, I would never look at the dress I did buy.

I went in with pictures of dresses that I liked, and a list of things that I was looking for in a dress, and what I did not like. I kept an open mind though because if you give the sales people more reigh a lot of times they will find some really great dresses for you. if they have been in a bridal shop for awhile they have seen dresses on a lot of girls and may know styles that will look good on you.

I looked online and in magazines then once I picked what styles I liked beter I went to the stores. Ended up getting a dress that I would never have thought I would like, mermaid style. Actually went to around 5 stores and ended up going back the the 2nd place I went.

I started by looking online. I'm not sure which site it was, but there was a site that had a ton of different dresses with price ranges. So I clicked on the cheapest price range, and found one that I absolutely loved... so far, out every dress I've seen, it's been my favorite and it's one of the cheaper ones out there ($460). It's still a little more than I had hoped to spend on the dress, but I've been told it's still a good price for a bridal dress. I also looked around on the designer's website of the dress that I liked and found a few others that I also like, for cheaper, so I plan on trying them all on if I can find a shop that has them all.

I found mine at a bridal show. I was just trying it on to show my mom the style I was looking for and it turned out to be the dress.

I actually did NOT turn to bridal magazines as I figured they'd steer me in a direction that may not be me or that I'd be swayed by the expense of their wedding dresses. In my heart I know a dress doesn't need to be $800 but if I see dress after dress at high prices I'd think "Well, that IS what's normal..."
I did go to a couple bridal shops but they were pretty useless for me for actual purchase because I'm not wearing white. BUT I got to see different styles on me. Then I searched and searched and searched the internet to see what I like and what I don't and what I'd never thought of before.
Finally, I lucked out and found a beautiful discontinued red down on eBay for $199.

hi. i am starting to buy magazines and i love a lot the designs :o that they have e.g. monique lhuillier, oscar de la renta, etc. problem is :bbcry: i don't know what's best for a really petite girl like me (stands 5 feet only), :bbcry: i'm on the slim/athletic side and my bra size is only 32a. i do not have time to go to shops and fit dresses - my schedule is too toxic. i wanted to get some help from you so that i dont have to spend too much time trying on dresses when i finally get the time to go to a shop. i want to be ready once i set foot inside a wedding shop.
also, do u know where i could get 4" high wedge (and really elegant) wedding shoes? my height is quite perfect when i stand beside my boyfriend, who is quite tall. but i dont want to look too small beside him on my wedding day nor have hurting feet :bbcry: until the wee hours. what do you think?

You are actually the same size as I am. Without seeing your picture, it would be hard to really give recommendations, but I can tell you what worked for me.
I avoided ball-gown. Why? Because I felt they made me look too dang short. I opted for something that was slimmer. My dress, if you look in my journal, is something more of a A-line, but I will probably have it taken in to be between A-line and a mermaid. Remember, you don't want a dress to overwhelm you. You want people to say "what a beautiful bride", not "what a beautiful wedding gown".
I am also 32A, and what I went with straight across top. I felt that sweetheart top or halter top made me look a lot smaller on top. Also, you can have bra cups sawn into the gown to help. I also found that dresses that had something in the bust area, and had something that separated the bust from the rest of the torso, to be of help. (Like Alfred Angelo, Dream in Color colllection, style 1193)
And as for finding one, I honestly suggest finding a couple of stores in your area that have a good selection and fit your budget, and just setting aside one day or afternoon or evening, to go look at gowns. It really is preferrable to try on a dress before you buy it. One of the stores I would suggest is Alfred Angelo. While I didn't get my dress there, they had a great selection and I found a couple I really liked, and one I almost bought, actually the one I mentioned above. Keep an open mind and try everything on, just tell the staff to show you what they think would look good on you. You may be surprised, and will very likely find something.

What do you guys think about renting a dress? I've always thought about that so I could save money, because really...when am I EVER going to wear this dress again? And by the time my future daughter gets married, she won't want my dress - she'll probably want her own. So what do you guys think about renting a dress? You can't alter rented dresses right? You just have to take what you can get?

As many others did, I got several subscriptions to bridal magazines. I did go to David's Bridal, but I didn't want to dish out the money. I would recommend going to boutique shops. Even though they have been previously worn, your perfect wedding dress may be there. The one in my town had similar and different dresses compared to David's Bridal but at a fraction of the cost. And if your perfect dress isn't white, I say go for it. . . be different. My dress is black, white, and teal. It fits beautifully and I will definitely be wearing it again!
