View Full Version : Does your yard have a water feature?

We're wanting something in our yard, but can't quite put our finger on it.

I'm leaning toward something like this:

...though I'd like it a thin rectangle instead of a square. And I might even want it raised a little...maybe a foot above ground, a foot under. Or something like that.

Jeremy wants a waterfall feature with it...something kinda like this:

Of course, we're just now putting up our fence (we chose a company finally! YAY!), so it'll be awhile before we start this project (next spring, prolly)...but we're ready to design! We've spent hours in the bookstore already looking through magazines and books about this. MAN, there's a lot of options out there!

Anyone have a pond? Or a fountain? Show it off!! :grinhappy:

I got nothing to share, but I'm looking forward to anything anybody else has. I love that stuff. It's so soothing.

We are in the process of restyling the Garden. When we moved in it had no flowers or shrubs. Two lawns that hadn't been mowed for years and a boring path down the middle.
We put some plants in tubs, dug up the path and are halfway through laying the new one (slabs and shingle). Add a new lean-to to the back of the house. Lay a new patio. Paint the fence and put in three large flower beds.

Like you, we are debating on a water feature. I've seen one that is a column with a ball on the top that revolves as the water comes out. Or a Greek style urn that water flows over the top of.

That is so cool! Someday when we own a house I'm sure I will be thinking about doing this kind of stuff!

That's why we decided against a pond because of the Grandson. We had a series of stories in the newspapers here about kids drowning in Fish Ponds etc. So many were happening it averaged out at one a week :bbeek:
A lot of people bricked them in or put a metal grate over the top to stop the kids. When you think that you can actually drown in two inches of water it does make you wonder.
So you're not a worry-wort as such. Just someone with a bit of foresight and a lot of common sense.

Does our yard have a water feature? Does the swimming pool count?

Nah, we've got the pool, but that's it. There IS this little alcove section of the back yard I've been wating to clear out and do a little Zen garden in, with maybe a small water feature, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Yep! Mack cast a pretty terra cotta concrete fountain and placed it in the center of our white limestone filled cactus garden. It turned out wonderful, but was ALOT of work! I will have to get pictures and post them. It is neat because it is such a contrast piece to have water in the middle of the cactus garden.

We thought about having a pond in the backyard, but have decided against it with 4 dogs and a doggie door! I think we will do another fountain but have the water disappear into a bed of river rocks. I love the look of the disappearing fountains.

I think a lot of the ponds and waterfalls and such are cool, but as mentioned before I think I'd worry about mosquitos and/or my dogs or niece falling in or something.

I heard the koi fish ponds were hard to deal with if you live where it gets cold in the winter; I think I heard you have to dig the pond like 10 feet down or something.

I did a quick search and found this I think is cool though -

DH and I have talked about putting some sort of indoor water feature in our next house instead of a fireplace :)

Maybe something like this -

My parents have a pretty big fish pond with koi in their yard, it takes a lot of up keep though!

We have a smaller yard, and our house is very near the water w. water views (beach/ocean) so that's a water feature for us!

:bblol: No, you don't have to dig 10 feet down...more like 2 feet. At least in our zone...the north may be different.

Off the original topic here, but I don't likey all these forums. My posts get moved to the forums I don't read (like this one) and I never get to see the responses to my questions! :bblol: Too bad for me, I guess.

To help out, I changed one of my settings to subscribe to any thread I post in (or something like that) that way I at least get a notification if someone replies.

I could have been confused with 10 and 2  :geek:

If you subscribe to your topics you will always get a reply; otherwise you can search your own posts ... or just learn to post in the appropriate forums ;-)

The more forums we have with a bunch of jumbled/inrelated topics the more confusing it gets.

When stuff gets moved it is not personal, it is just to make the board and forums more organized for everyone :-)
