We got a CrockPot for the wedding and I haven't used it yet....because I don't know what to make!

I saw on another cooking thread that people love them - so what recipes do you all love?

I like things that don't take much prep time but still taste good. Here's one of my family's (except for my vegetarian daughter:)) favorites:

Crock Pot Steak Teriyaki

Steak Teriyaki

2 1/2 pounds boneless chuck steak
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 tablespoon sugar
2 tablespoons oil
1/2 cup soy sauce
1 clove garlic, crushed

Cut steak into slices and place in slow cooker. Combine ginger, sugar, oil,
soy sauce and garlic and pour over meat. Cover and cook on low 6-8 hours.

Recommended sides: Rice and fresh vegetables.

I don't have a crock pot cause I couldn't imagine what I'd make in it. Plus I always wondered if it was really safe to leave on for hours ... and what is the difference in just using a pot on the stove turned on low?

The recipes posted so far sound good though :)

I use mine sometimes on the weekend, I throw a roast in it, with vegetables ad let it cook ALL darn day.

I would like to try it one time while I am at work and have the meal ready when we get home, but I am so paranoid about leaving things plugged in.

LOL ok you may want to use your crock pot for the same thing that I use it for ...

I bought a crock pot JUST to melt wax in. I dipped innocent teddy bears into hot scented wax.

http://www.homesweethomecandles.ca/pdshoppro/images/Bear-tan-large-pic.jpg

How To Make Wax-Dipped Scented Teddy Bears
From Sher Bailey

What you'll need to make wax-dipped scented bears:
Something to melt wax in.
(I use an old crock-pot. You'll need to use something that doesn't overheat the wax and something you will only use for melting wax.)

Bear
wax
fragrance oil
rubber gloves
fork
wax paper
saucer or plate.

If you're giving the bear as a gift, you'll also need:
cellophane bag, ribbon

Quick Tip 1: I would suggest starting with a small bear with short hair. You can do longhaired bears as well, but start simply. I get my bears at Family Dollar or a similar store so that I keep my costs low.

Quick Tip 2: Although you can use bears that aren't jointed, they are harder to work with. They don't want to sit up straight unless you really work with them. Try to find jointed bears or bears that are already shaped to sit.

Quick Tip 3: Unless you have candle making supplies already on hand, you will be fine just using regular paraffin that you can buy at Wal-Mart. It can typically be found in the canning supplies section.

Quick Tip 4: Your scent is no place to skimp. Get the best you can find. Try Hobby Lobby or Michaels. Remember to add the scent after the wax is melted completely and right before you are ready to dunk your bear. Otherwise, you'll cook the scent out!

Quick Tip 5: For extra long lasting scent, you can inject your bear as well. That is just what it sounds like. Buy an inexpensive syringe and inject your bear with the scented wax.

Ready?

Melt your wax. Add 1 to 1.5oz of your fragrance oil. Dip bear into scented wax. Using rubber gloves squeeze out as much wax as possible. Quickly, take a fork and fluff the fur until it`s all picked out and it looks the way you want. If you don`t move quickly, your bear will have dandruff! Place on wax paper to dry. When dry, place your scented air freshener bear on a plate to protect furniture.

If you're giving it as a gift, enclose it in cellophane and tie with ribbon.

Ooh, I have a GOOD one.

It's my mom's recipe, and anytime she goes to ANY party, people BEG her to make it.

It's appropriately called "Crockpot Potatoes" and it's used as a side dish to grilled chicken, hamburgers and hotdogs, ribs, etc.

Servings: 12

6-8 large potatoes, peeled and boiled until tender
1 medium onion, finely chopped (sweeter onions, like vidalia, are great)
1 large green pepper, finely chopped
1/2 a small bag of pepperoni - quarter each piece (stack them and slice is easiest)
1 stick of butter
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
salt and pepper to taste

In saucepan, melt the butter. Add the pepper, onion, and pepperoni, and season with a little salt and pepper. Simmer on medium-low heat for at least 10 minutes to flavor through.
Once potatoes are cool enough to handle, cut into bite-sized cubes.
Put potatoes, pepperoni mixture, and garlic powder into a crockpot and let cook, on medium or high heat, for at least 1 hour, adding additional butter, salt and pepper if necessary. (Cooking on medium for a couple of hours is best!!!)

Ooh, and one of my favorites is:

1 chuck roast (trust me, this is the best cut for this meal!)
1 packet of dried onion soup mix

Sear the meat on all sides in a frying pan. Put into crockpot, cover with water, and add seasoning (mix a little to dissolve). Cook on Low for 8 hours. When you eat it, the meat will pull right away from the fat, and it's SO flavorful!

Take some pork roast, frozen stick it into a crockpot in the morning. Just cover it with water and set it on low, and let it go. Once you're back home, pour off the water, shred the pork with fork, and add BBQ sauce. There, you got yummy pulled pork.

Ooh yes Neko! We used to do that, but then our crockpot broke and my mom bought us a new one.. the problem is the new one is a "for 2 people" crockpot so you can't put much in it!!

But yes, I LOVE the potatoes in as well because they soak up some of the meat flavor!

We used to have one growing up and I only remember my mom using it for two things. She would make corned beef and cabbage every once in a while. She would always bust it out to make queso dip too. I remember lots of butter, Velveeta, and rotel tomatoes! :grinhappy:

These are 2 of my favorite crock pot recipes. More for the fall/winter. The stew is incredible and the stuffing a so moist and saves room in the oven if you're cooking a large meal! Enjoy.

Lamb and Winter Vegetable Stew 8 servings

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 lb lamb stew meat, cubed
1 cups beef broth
1 cup dry red wine
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 TBSP chopped fresh thyme
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1 bay leaf
2 cups peeled, seeded, and sliced butternut squash
1 cup peeled, sliced parsnips
1 cup peeled, chopped sweet potatoes
1 cup sliced celery
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
1/2 cup sour cream
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

Heat the oil in a large saucepan, and brown the lamb meat on all sides. Drain fat and place in crockpot. Throw in everything else, except the sour cream and flour, in the morning before work. When home, make a 'roux' with the sour cream and flour and then tossed it in to the stew. Remove the bay leaf, serve.

Slow Cooker Stuffing Yields: 16 servings

1 cup butter or margarine
2 cups chopped onion
2 cups chopped celery
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
12 oz sliced mushrooms
12 cups dry bread cubes
1 tsp poultry seasoning
1 1/2 tsp dried sage
1 tsp dried thyme
1/2 tsp dried marjoram
1 1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp ground black pepper
4 1/2 cups chicken broth, or as needed
2 eggs, beaten

Melt butter or margarine in a skillet over medium heat. Cook onion, celery, mushroom, and parsley in butter, stirring frequently. Spoon cooked vegetables over bread cubes in a very large mixing bowl. Season with poultry seasoning, sage, thyme, marjoram, and salt and pepper. Pour in enough broth to moisten, and mix in eggs. Transfer mixture to slow cooker, and cover.
Cook on Low for 4 to 8 hours.

Ok, so this sounds a little weird, but everyone I have ever made this for absolutely loves it! I get asked to make it for every family get-together. My fiance, Jamie, says I should change the name of it to "Chocoalte Addiction!"

Chocolate Mess

-1 package chocolate cake mix (I get the cheap Devil's Food kind)
-1 pint sour cream
-1 package instant chocolate pudding
-1 bag chocolate chips (I use semi-sweet)
-3/4 cup vegatable oil
-4 eggs
-1 cup water

Spray Crock Pot with non-stick cooking oil. Mix all ingredients together. Pour mixture into Crock Pot. Cook on low for 8 hours or until top springs back like a sponge. Let cool a little and spoon out into bowls (remember, it's called Chocolate MESS!) and serve with vanilla ice cream!

This recipe is for a regular size pot, but you could have the recipe and make it in a smaller one, I'm sure! Just don't cook it so long, and keep watching it so it doesn't burn.

This is my own recipe for pulled pork:

(1) Boston butt (pork shoulder)--this makes for very tender meat; cut off excess fat after opening package

In a bowl, combine 1 cup smoked paprika, 1/4 cup onion powder, 1/4 to 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1 tsp salt, 1 tbs pepper....mix together. Rub this mixture onto all sides of the pork (really work it in there, don't be afraid!)

Place one bottle of your choice of BBQ sauce into the crock pot , then add in the seasoned pork. Add in 2 cloves of minced garlic, 1 tbs of honey, then top with another bottle of BBQ sauce so that the pork is mostly covered.

Cook on low setting for 10 hours. A couple of hours before the pork is done, take a fork to the meat. It should easily come apart. Keep pulling it apart until the large chunks of meat are gone, and continue to let cooking.

I usually serve this on wheat buns with some sauteed vidalia onions, with a side salad. It's always a hit!!

This sounds gross, FH is a very picky eater and he would never dream eating Sauerkraut by itself, but he loves this!

Pork Tenderloin and Sauerkraut
1 Pork Tenderloin
2 cans Sauerkraut (with caraway seeds)
Garlic (to taste, usually a clove or 2)
Pepper (to taste)
Flour
Onions (optional. Usually half an onion will do)

Brown the tenderloin in a pan using the flour. Empty the 2 cans of Sauerkraut into the bottom of the crockpot (do not drain the cans). Add garlic and pepper to taste. Add in slices of onions. Once the tenderloin is brown, add to the crock pot. Cook on low for 8 hours.

Yum! Makes me hungry right now!

How funny that this thread got revived now-I *just* used the crock pot we got as a wedding gift for the first time last night. I made a sausage and potato soup. It was delicious

1 tube of breakfast sausage (I used some wild venison/pork mixed sausage we got from my uncle)
4 cubed potatoes
1 stalk of celery, chopped
1 carrot, chopped (I didn't have one, so I just used another celery stalk)
1/2 an onion (it could have used a whole one)
1 can of evaporated milk
2 cups (or an 8 oz package) your cheese of choice

Brown sausage and onion together
chop potatoes, celery, carrot and put in the bottom of crock pot
put the sausage and onion on top
heat on low for about 4 or 5 hours
in the last 5 minutes, mix in the milk and cheese

It was pretty delicious, and great for an unusually cold night. I am thinking about making some crock pot meatloaf tonight.

Oops, forgot an important part!

14 oz of chicken stock goes into the mix as well.

We also added an entire can of Guinness to make it "Irish." lol

Sloppy Dogs (From my friend Amanda at work)

A package of hot dogs, sliced
1 cup of ketchup
1/4 cup of mustard
1/2 cup of sweet relish

Stir all together, set on high until hot and serve in hot dog buns. It sounds weird, but I swear they are good.

Macaroni and Cheese

1 (16 oz.) pkg. macaroni
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 (13 oz.) can evaporated milk
1 1/2 cups milk
1 teaspoon salt
4 cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
1/2 cup melted butter

Cook macaroni in boiling salted water, following package directions. Drain well. Grease bottom and sides of 3 1/2 to 5-quart crockpot. Toss hot macaroni in slow cooker with the vegetable oil then add all remaining ingredients.Stir gently to combine then cover and cook on LOW for 3 to 4 hours, stirring occasionally.

I LOVE my crockpot. I only started using it regularly a few months ago, only because I thought it was too hard to figure out recipes. Now I use it once or twice a week. Some of my favorites are:

Ribs. I just put some ribs in the crockpot with a bottle of barbecue sauce and let them cook all day. They fall off the bone are so good.

Roast. I put a roast in the crockpot along with a packet of au jus and water, and let it cook. Shredded it up and put it on rolls with cheese and it's really good.

Corned beef. Just put a corned beef in the crockpot with whatever spices you want and vegetables, and cover the beef with water. Let it cook all day and it practically falls apart.

I also do stuff with chicken, sloppy joes, beef stew. I use those little packets of mixes a lot too.

I ten to cook by what you can spare or what's in the cupboard, so these are all approx.

bbq meatballs -
1 large bag frozen meatballs (guessing 2-3 pounds, store here only has two sizes)
1 regular or 1/2 large can of grape jelly (about 12 oz)
1 can bbq sauce

toss'em in, stir a couple times at the start and a couple times when about done, can be done in a couple hours on high or all day on low, family loves them over rice.

Ham and Potato Crock
peel and slice about 1/2 to 2/3 crock full, we like them about 1/4 inch thick
1 thick sandwich slice ham from deli per serving or about a pound of your favorite ham, rough diced (that means bite sized chunks or a little smaller) in a family sized crock
1 pound guyere finely sliced or grated large (can also use swiss, comte, beaufort, even roquefort or bleu according to your taste)
16 oz sour cream (lite if your counting calories LOL)
1 cup milk
1/2t pepper
t salt

I grease the crock with a little olive oil, mix the milk, salt, pepper, and sour cream together well, then layer potatoes, then cheese, then a good charge of ham, then some of the sour cream mix. I try to do four of these layers and then I cook on low three or four hours.
DH hates ham, the kids wouldn't touch any of those "strange" cheese, but they fight over the last ladle of this stuff.
