View Full Version : What Does FH Do For A Living?

As an extension to my original post "What Do You Do For A Living" i thought it would be good to see what the men in our lives do for a living.
Mine works in the City Of London as a Construction Worker.
He drives Diggers, Dumpers and Digs holes to locate Water, Gas, Electrics etc for renewing or relocating.
Last year he won the Gold Award for being the Best Construction Worker in the whole of London. Picking up his award from the London Mayor at a huge Banquet / Ceremony.
I was well chuffed when he won because he was the first person within his company to win it in 20yrs. And this year he is nominated again.
BTW, we never moan about Road Works because it's that which funds our lifestyle. :winktongue:
Wow, Mitch, what an awesome accomplishment that was!!
Chad has a degree in culinary arts and is now a kitchen manager at a restaurant called Pappadeaux. He's the youngest chef to ever be made a kitchen manager there. The Art Institute of Houston actually hung his goofy graduation picture up in the hallway of the school. They choose two students each year to honor and he was one of them!
Now he's going back to school for a degree in environmental engineering. (That's why I now miss my lovey all day long! :sob:) Being an organic gardening, recycling, vegan in the restaurant industry just weighs too heavily on his conscience even though he does often love his job. People keep telling us to open up our own restaurant/bakery. If only they knew how much of a risky investment that is!

FH is a mechanical engineer. He works currently for a company called LED Effects. They do some really neat things. They are the ones that designed and built the ball that dropped in time square on New Years. They do a lot of really interesting work.

He's an underwriter (life insurance) for the financial division of a major insurance co. However, when he grows up, he'd LIKE to be a firefighter (however, I think this is the last year he can apply for firefighter school and still make the cutoff, so I don't think he's going to do it).

Hugh is the senior creative (ie graphic designer) in a marketing department of a lighting company. He's been a designer for 27 years and has worked in several ad agencies working on everything from trade show displays, corporate branding, television, websites, print material and packaging design. This is the first time he's worked for a marketing department of just one company.
In that he can design manually (as it was done) or on computer (as it is done now), they call him MacGiver because he's the go to guy whenver there is a problem

He is in the process changing jobs though - we just heard that he should be getting an offer letter by the end of the month! - and he will be working as a project manager for the web/communications department at Dartmouth Medical School. WOOO HOO!!

How old is he? I know around here it's almost always 35. FH was 33 when he applied, so he was cutting it kinda close.
BTW, to add my 2 cents, FH is a fireman if it's not obvious. He's been hired for almost 2 years now. He started training in August of 2006, graduated in December of 2006 then immediately started on shift. He's been a merit firefighter for a year and a half. Before that he floated around in between 6 years in the Army. I'm so happy with his career now.:D

My husband used to be an asst. manager for a major sub/fastfood shop. Before he moved up here he worked for a Bob Evan's for about 8 years doing everything from cooking to waiting tables. He got out of the food service last year and now works in a place where they make parts for transformers. He likes that he works with his hands and loves the hours. He get to be home with his family in the evenings. He doesn't miss out on mush the kids do any more.

Mine's a Metrologist/electronics tech. Essentially he calibrates and fixes high end testing equipment for a company to then rents it out to places like Boing and Lockheed.
Once we move, he will likely look for a job in hospitals, to calibrate hospital equipment, since those jobs can't be out-sources. And eventually open a firearms, reloading and brewing supplies store with a friend of ours, as well as do some organic farming. We'll see how it goes.

As of now, Eddie is a mailman... as is his dad, which is why he ended up going for that job (his dad told him they were hiring). It pays great, and he's lost weight... but he doesn't want to be doing that forever, and I don't blame him. So he's gonna have to eventually go to school again.

My FH draws lines on rocks! Basically he works for a massive mining company, and goes around the country looking for good places to build new mines. He loves it because it because the money is very excellent, but I secretly hate it because his roster sucks- 2 weeks on, 1 week off. So he comes home for a week, then spends 2 weeks skipping about the country side, drawing lines on rocks.

Mike is currently a Quality Control inspector for a construction materials company. He basically test all of the gravel, sand, and washed rock to ensure it meets standards for construction use.
However he is now just awaiting for the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) to finish his backround check, and barring them finding some crazy secret relative who murders people, will be attending training this winter! I am so excited for him to finally be able to pursue his dream job!

My FH is an electronics engineer by degree and Navy training. He currently owns two computer repair and sales stores, but keeps dreaming about seeing his name atop a huge building with his office on the top floor. I can envision it as well, because when he wants something, he makes it happen. It's a relief and scary at the same time. LOL!
At home, he's a jack of all trades. There's nothing he can't build or fix, but his passion is working with electricity. :)

People keep telling us to open up our own restaurant/bakery. If only they knew how much of a risky investment that is!
I freagggin loooove papadeax! it is off the chaaaain!
I must tell you though, the higher the risk, the better the chances are for you to make a higher return. Now since we're in a lil situation with the gas an all, I wouldn't suggest doing it now,cuz people are thinking more about saving than spending at the moment. But when the time is right, girl I say go for it!
My husband is a GIA certified jeweler for a company called Oxford Jewelers in Stonecrest mall. He went to that school in NY I forget what its called I think it's called GIA too.... I dunno n e wayz yeah he went there, some people ask why I work... it can kinda get boring in the house all by urself. My house has a guest house in the back, and my mom lives there with my dad she can get kinda annoying, cuz sometimes she comes and cooks and stuff, but hey shes my mom, plus its convenient I just walk on over drop off my daughter and i'm out.

Tiernan has two jobs right now . . . his main, FT+bennies job is a banker for Wells Fargo, helping to administer retirement plans. You know if you need money out of your 401K and have to ask the bank? That's what he does, works with the paperwork. The other job is evenings, doing customer technical support in a call center for the IPhone.
I missed the other thread too! I was a stage manager for the last 15 years, now I'm currently going through a kind of major career crisis and am heading towards trying to get a career going by writing . . . .or (if I can find the money to get the certification) become a pastoral counselor, the first step towards becoming a life coach type person.
We'll see.

My FH actually has the same job that I do. We both work for DuPont in New Johnsonville, TN. We are in the maintenance dept in the reaction area. Our plant is the world's largest titanium dioxide plant. And we use more chlorine than a chlorine plant does. It pays very well but I tell people that it is hazard pay. The maintenance here is not like maintenance at any other place. Everything is very large. We both love our jobs. I'm the only woman in my shop and one of only 8 women in maintenance out of almost 200 maintenance personnel. I do love my job though. And I get to see FH throughout the day. Ahh! The perks!

DH is a staff engineer (graduated with BS in 2006) for a firm that does underwater acoustical engineering. He does a lot of testing and analyzing for the Navy (the company is a government contractor) to make sure that the sonar waves coming off of the equipment aren't harming the aquatic life. Justin has a dual degree in Music Performance and Music Production.
- He is a log home dealer for The Original Lincoln Logs (oh, he general contracted our home)
- He owns/runs a recording studio in the ground level of our log home (13 years in business!)
- He sells professional audio gear and sells the equipment for and installs home theatre and home recording studios
- He plays lead guitar in a successful local band
- oh, he's recently started running sound for a local nightclub. For his intership in college he was a sound engineer for a large company that did sound for all the large concert venues in the area. He was offered a job touring with Jewel but he turned it down!!!
With the economy the way it is, I'm glad he has multiple avenues of income.

'Cause it doesn't make a difference
If we make it or not
We've got each other and that's a lot
For love - we'll give it a shot

They sign contracts with various other companies like EA and Sony and help develop games for PS2, PS3, Wii, etc.
Very proud of him - in the 3 years since he graduated from college he has name in credits of 4 released games (and 2 more to be released soon.)
He plans to work there until I finish college, then we'll go to grad school and he'll get Masters in CS and Math.
He would eventually like to start his own software company or teach Math.
