View Full Version : Bra or sewn in cups?

I'm wondering what most brides do: wear a bra or have cups sewn in?
I was under the impression that having cups sewn in was the typical route, and I had that done, but I'm not sure I really like the result.

I'm not doing either... but my dress is supportive enough to not need either. Sorry, I know that's really no help.

Here's what the dress looks like. I'm thinking about getting a longline bra.

First of all - Beautiful dress!
Second - everyone that I have talk to that has had the cups loves them. That being said (I am not a seamstress, so I am not going to be much help) the person who does your alterations should be able to tell you what would be best for that style of dress!

I got a strapless bra/corset type thing from David's Bridal - not sure what it's really called. But it held up really well.

I think the decision is dependent upon 1.) your bust size, and 2.) if you need/want additional "control" or support that your dress doesn't offer. Really, if you're more than about a B cup, and your dress isn't structured, I think a separate bra (or at least a stick on silicone bra) would provide better support (and nicer shaping) than just sewn in cups... but then some dresses are too thin and sheer to allow for a real bra underneath.

I'm getting sewn in cups, cause I think that bras are evil. However, I am very small on top.

The dress I'm (hopefully) getting, has enough support that I think I can get away with just cups sewn in. I'd rather not to the bra route. The dress is pretty heavy, so the less I have to put on underneath it, the better!

For all you girls who think your dresses have enough support... a cautionary tale...
On another (non wedding related) forum I'm on, a couple recently got married. The bride is a beautiful, fit woman, with a very ample chest (not enormous, but proportionate). She had a beautiful strapless gown, which appears (from the pics) to have plenty of "structure" to it.... However, in EVERY pic, all you can focus on is her chest!!!!! :bbeek: Seriously!! The dress seems to have kind of been "crushed" under the weight of her breasts, so there's... let's say... more than just a *hint* of cleavage....
So be realistic with yourself about how chesty you (general you, no one in particular) are (if you're chesty, that is) and think about how pics might look. Once you get your dress, move around, raise your arms, dance, reach up as if you're hugging people..... and notice if the dress moves, or if you feel overexposed at any point... :)
Just a thought!

Yup. No bra or cups sewn in for me, either. My name's not Chesty Love, though... although I'm a solid B.

I had cups sewn into my dress. However this option is not for everyone. I have a very small bust. I am a very small B cup, so I didn't need all that much support. I picked this option because my dress has a very low cut back.

Personally, I'm a DD so I'm planning on going with a strapless bra.

I think that with the style of the dress a longline bra may show in the front. If you are not chesty, I say to go with the sewn in cups and then use that special tape to tape down the edges of the top of the dress.

I'm semi chesty (about a D cup). I'm going to try to find a longline bra, I think, but I'm concerned about it showing.

I'm a A cup so can pretty much go without a bra at all, BUT I wear 'em padded and pushup! I want to look a bit bustier in my gown. Guess I could go with sewn in cups right?

They do make the tape on bra that really pushes them and in for cleavage. Like on this site. http://www.senselingerie.com/c-18-adhesive-bras-tapes.aspx?gclid=CIn8iJPDsJQCFQNHFQodejwPtg
My friend used these kind for a similar style dress for homecoming one year and they really worked well. She was a C cup. It is a bit difficult to get off with out water though.
They also make bras like this: http://www.freshpair.com/Fashion-Forms-U-Plunge-Bra-29674.html for dresses that plunge in the front. I think this one would really work because the straps are convertible.

What a beautiful gown!
I am a C cup and my dress is strapless, so I am doing a bustier/bra thing (from David's bridal). My sister got married last year (she is a C cup too) and she did the same and it looked good. So we'll see!
I think TangoWedding hated her sewn in cups, as she is a bit busty and said they made her breasts look 'deformed'.:bbeek:

I'm a small B so I'm having bra cups sewn into my dress.
Though the U bra would be okay at the front, the back straps are not too low. Maybe you can check out the brand Ultimo, they have a low front-low back bodysuit.

I may have found what you're referring to, but it looks like it has been discontinued!

I am having the sewn in cups. According to the lady at the dress shop, my dress is "very well constructed" and I wouldn't need a strapless bra. Plus I'm small on top. I'll be glad to not have to worry about an annoying bra slipping down all day!

my friend who got married this past summer (june 2007) is a probably about a full c cup, and wore a strapless bra with her strapless dress. by the end of the night the bra had fallen all the way down around her waist! she would've been better off with one of the bra-corset things that victorias secret or davids bridal sells. so make sure if you go with regualar strapless bra, you dont end up with this problem!
doesnt sound like fun.

Fortunately there's no risk of that, because my dress is too low in the back (see below) for a regular strapless bra to be hidden!! You would be able to see the hooks and the band. So I am going to try to find one of those longline, low back ones. (Any suggestions???)

Your dress is beautiful!!!! I recommend bra cups, but I think going braless or not having bra cups would also work. Can't wait to see pictures of you in your dress!

I got one of these from DB as well. It holds up very well and is not uncomfortable either. It's a strapless bra with tons of eye hooks all the way down from mid back to almost waist.
