Hey guys! I'm finally posting the DIY veil tutorial I promised. Hope it works for you guys. PM me if you have any questions.

Here's what you need:

Tulle- Easy and cheap to purchase from your nearest fabric store. This website (http://www.theweddingveilshop.co.uk/id153.html) has a great guide to determining how much you will need. Because tulle is difficult to cut in a straight line on your own, have your fabric store cut exactly how much you need. Mine is 2-tier knee length. Also keep in mind width. My width is 54''. If you want your veil to appear fuller, try 108'' width.

Needle & Thread
Pins

Headpiece- There are many choices for headpieces. If you are using a tiara, unless you are wearing it as a headband I recommend using a clear plastic comb. I am using a headband as I am making a wreath of baby’s breath.

Optional: accents and edging (I prefer no edging, so I do not show you how to add it in this tutorial. However, you could probably just stitch the edging you choose around the veil. For accents, I chose Swarovski HotFix crystals with applicator)

If you are using multiple tiers, place your tulle down on the floor to make sure the tiers are correctly layered on top of each other. You would hate to get to sewing and discover one tier is wider than the other because one tier is sideways.

Once again, if you are using multiple tiers, pin your tiers together about 1-2 inches below the top edge of the veil. If you are only using one tier, you can skip this step if you choose.

Thread your needle and begin stitching. Because I ran into problems with my edge coming apart due to the end knot not being big enough, I recommend using very thick thread or doubling your thread up and knotting the edge, as shown.

Begin stitching at the far edge of the veil about 1-2 inches below the top edge. Stitch across using 1 inch stitches as straight as possible.

Occasionally pull the thread of the veil tight. The tulle at the top should come together as shown in the picture.

If you are using accents and edging, add them now. For crystals or pearls, I have noticed the easiest way is Hotfix accents using an applicator. Follow application instructions and scatter the accents across your veil as desired.

Be sure that the accents are scattered over the correct sides, which is facing away from you when you are wearing the veil.

For my blusher, I decided the best way to add the crystals would be to place the crystals back to back on both sides of the veil. This way, the crystals will show whether the blusher is covering my face or not.

When finished, knot the edge of the thread so the top edge keeps its shape. Stitch the top edge securely to your headpiece. If you are using multiple tiers, make sure that when you place the headpiece in your hair, the shorter sections are facing away from you.

You now have a gorgeous veil you have made yourself!

Oh wow Star...it doesn't take too long as long as you don't have any setbacks (like my problem with the thread being too thin). Good luck!

I think I may go to Hobby Lobby.... I might get some tulle and try one tonight just to see.... I think that would be good, because I just can't figure out what exactly I want in a veil, find one, and want to spend $20 on it!

Where would I find a clear comb?

I saw the combs at Joann's but I'm pretty sure you could find them in any crafts store that has a wedding section.

Awesome, thanks much for posting that! I'm thinking about trying it out once I start looking for wedding accessories for myself.

Do you think this would work for a birdcage veil?
I found one I liked online but just hate the thought of spending $50 bucks for a little piece of netting:bbeek:
I just want a simple birdcage veil with a flower comb for the back of my hair & maybe pearls around the bottom edge.

I did a search online and found one on a vintage sewing site but it was more for if you wanted to attach one to a hat.:bbcry:

What do you think?

I went to this site:
http://www.birdcageveils.com/photo_gallery_birdcage_emlawson.htm

I think it can be done, but it may need some tweaks. However, this site has great photos of veils from all angles, which is something you would definitely need.

You could also try this method:
http://vintagesewing.info/1950s/52-hmh/hmh-133.html

If anything, that method gives you the measurements you would need.

Those are the sites that I looked at for "how to's"
I guess I'll just have to get some tulle and try it out:) I still have 10mths so if all else fails I could buy one....

They really are very easy to make. I made one for my daughter, and it turned out beautiful! They really don't even take a lot of time. I sewed hers to a comb...then my husband glued the crystals on...with plain old Elmer's glue. It dries clear, so you couldn't even see it.
