We want to do a Trail Mix favor our Fall/Country Theme wedding. I wondered if any of you ladies had any good recipes for Trail Mix and wondered how far in advance would you make it so it would stay fresh and when would you put it in the organza bags? Thanks in advance.

I don't know if putting it in those organza bags would be the best idea since they are porous; maybe a plastic bag with ribbon would be better.

I would think pretty much any kind of nuts, granola and dried fruit would be ok. I'd stay away from chocolate that is in some mixes as it might melt.

Trail mix is pretty easy, you just mix it all in a bowl and then dish out the servings. How about something like this; just mix in any of the following -

Cheese snack crackers
Bagal chips
Pita chips
Granola
Peanuts, cashews, almonds, etc
Sunflower seeds
Dried cranberries
Dried cherries
Dried apricots
Dried pineapple
Dried apples
Banana chips
Raisins
Mini pretzels
Multi grain Cheerios
Whole wheat Chex cereal

Ohhh...neat idea!

My favorite is what we used to call Gorp in Girl Scouts. It doesn't have much to it, but I love the salty/sweet of it.

Just mix together:

Plain M&M's
Raisins
Dry Roasted Peanuts

YUM! This is what I love to take when we go on road trips!

ETA - Brandi's point about the organza bags is a good one! I would use food grade cellophane bags. Here is a link to the ones that I buy to package my dog cookies in:

http://cellobags.com/

They come in all sizes and you can buy the ones with the square bottom. No minimum orders and the quality is great! Then you could order a pretty sticker for the bags and make a really nice favor!

Thanks alot for the idea Brandi.....I still would like to use the Organza bags if I could like I said could I just use a cellophane bag and then insert them into the Organza bag?

Sure! I don't see why you couldn't do this, but if that is the case, why not save yourself a little money and just buy Ziploc snack bags since they don't have to be "pretty". :D

I don't know that I'd put all the stuff I mentioned together ;) It was just some ideas of things that are common in trail mixes.

Some I personally like is pretzels, cheese crackers and bagel chips. Another one is pretzels, peanuts, chocolate chips, banana chips and Cheerios.

Oh I know...I figured you were just giving me examples what to put in....so you think I should stay away from the Chocolate like M&M's????

Refresh my memory - Is your reception going to be outside? If it is, what is the average temperature during the time you are getting married?

I would use M&M's over chocolate chips because the candy shell will help them keep from melting, but if it is super hot, even M&M's don't hold up well. I think you will be fine though since you are getting married in the fall.

We are having trail mix on our candy buffet, and I think for a fall wedding favor it is a great idea! Not many people do not like trail mix. They'll either eat it all, or pick out what they like and maybe ever swap with other guests!

Have you seen those Kissables? I think that would be super cute if you decided to use some chocolate. I looove those things! :grinhappy:

Do you have a Whole Foods or any other grocery store that has a bulk bin section? You could get lots of amazing ideas for trail mixes there. I think I get a different trail mix every time I go to Whole Foods. There must be 20 kinds there! You wouldn't need to spend all the money getting it there, but you could certainly get inspiration.
