I'm torn on my veil options. We're planning for an outdoor spring ceremony, and my mother and I are designing and making my dress.

I want the dress to be rather simple by bridal standards - a V-neck surplice neckline, with a yellow inset embroidered in white at the waist. I may continue the yellow detail down the back, as a sash or break curving to the ground. It's going to be layered silk chiffon (white, with the inset in yellow chiffon).

I may add a small amount of beading and/or embroidery across the top section, but I want the skirt to remain very clean and simple. I'd also prefer to have no or minimal train.

Something similar to this, though with the midriff insert colored:

So, to get to the point: the "official" stance says that an outdoor bride should not wear a veil longer than elbow, since the setting is relatively informal. That said, I'm considering doing a long veil, in order to add a little "pop" to the dress, a little extra beading or detail that can then be removed for the reception.

Would it look silly or inappropriate to wear a chapel-length chiffon veil over a trainless simple dress? If the dress is very simple, would a detailed veil look out of place, or would it provide a little extra detailing that's missing?

Would adding the decorated train-veil add or detract from the simple dress? Would it be better to add a detachable train to the dress itself (at the peak of the v-back) instead of the veil?

NOT AT ALL! I am doing a long veil and I'm getting married on a beach. I think it will look so chic!

I think a long and detailed veil would be very pretty. I wouldn't go TOO detailed, as you said, so it doesn't overpower the dress, but some delicate details would be very pretty.

i recently went to a black tie wedding and the bride wore a stunning but simple dress (stunning cuz it was form fitting and he body was gorgeous in it.. just made her look like a grown up and she usually looks about 20 when she is actuall 30. and attached to her head was a gorgeous CHAPEL length veil with intriqute beading and designing. it was incredible!!

I totally think it's ok to have a long veil with a floor length dress. My wedding was outdoors and if I hadn't already had an elbow length veil, I would have gone for the cathedral length solely for the tradition behind it.

I think it would look great! The simple gown and elegant long veil will look great together. Who cares about etiquette anyway? ;)
