View Full Version : Calling all amateur photographers!

Tango's honeymoon pictures got me wondering who else on here does amateur photography. I've been doing it for a couple of years and think it's a blast! Adam and I actually met at a photography club...awww ^_^
Currently we use a Nikon D70 and a Nikon D80. I can never remember the ratios of the lenses, but basically one is a normal/macro lens, one is a zoom lens and one is a wide angle lens.
Macro is my favorite "style" I guess you could say - but I'd love to expand that in the future. My favorite subject is nature (flowers, butterflies, animals, etc). And here are some of my favorite shots:

I love your butterfly pic!
DH and I currently have a Nikon D40 + a little fujipix. I also have an older Nikon 35mm SLR (+ lenses) and I used to have a Pentax K1000 (+ lenses ). I also had a darkroom, englarger and all the necessary processing equipment in my parents home.
Sadly, we don't really have the time any longer to take pretty pics but maybe we will get back into it some day.

I LOVE photography. I'm actually in some classes. I'm the only one without a huge fancy camera, BUT I need to make sure I love it before spending soooo much money on an expensive camera...KWIM?!?!
Here's some of my faves taken with just a 7.1 pixel camera.

I like to dabble in photography, but I really need a much better camera. All I have is my little point-and-shoot. I really want a Digital Rebel. You can see most of my favorite pictures here (although Ben took a few): http://flickr.com/photos/sweetvenus/

I don't know to call myself anymore; I used to be a professional wedding/portait photographer. I have more fun with the nature and sort of abstract stuff; but I haven't taken many pics in a while now, other than of my dogs.

I work with my Nikon D80 digital SLR and I love it. I had a few lenses, a 70-300MM zoom lens and an 18-135MM lens, and a I'd love to take a class sometime.

I used my Nikon D80 with the 70-300MM lens. That lens loves a lot of light, so if it's a night game it would have been hard to take those shots. We were pretty far up in the rows of seats (sorry can't remember what row).
It's a great experience. They scream HOTDOG and POPCORN and CRRRRRRRRRACKER JAX!!! and throw the bags of popcorn and cracker jax at you- you'll have a great time. Just one word of advice, if you want to buy souveneirs, get them OUTSIDE the park vs. inside, the price drops about 30-50% if you get them on the street outside! (and there are plenty of vendors outside.)

Our game I believe its at 3:55 pm......I cant believe were leaving a week friday....its funny bc Boston is playing the Cardinals....my FH likes the Cardinals, my son and I like Boston Red Sox and my daughter likes the Yankees......I cant say enough how excited we all are to go.... Maybe you would know how close the Aquarium would be to the stadium or in the vicinty thereof...
Fenway is not far from the Aquarium, about 3 miles I'd say?
With traffic I'd give yourself 20 minutes to get from one to the other- and be prepared to give up your first born for parking! (usually starts at about 20$- you would be better off to take the T- which is like 2$ or something now.)

Hey Tango, I was checking out your photos and notice a blue tint on a few. Did you want that there? It looks like the white balance is way off, unless you edited them to look that way. But if you didn't edit them that way and you want it removed my next question is do you shoot in raw or just jpg? And last, if it's raw it's REALLY easy to remove. If it's jpg you can still remove it.
I love photography and have been shooting for many years. If I don't have my SLR with me I have a small sony cybershot camera that I take with me everywhere. People comment "do you ever leave home without that" my response, nope!
I have a Nikon D70, my sister has a D80 that I use a lot. I wanted the D300, but the wedding came along so my money is being saved for the wedding. My sister and I share a lot of our equipment. We have 50mm 1.4 lens, the kit lens that came on the D70 and D80. 70-300mm lens that I haven't touched in forever. My FAVORITE lens is our 85mm 1.8. I love that lens! I want to get the 70-200mm 2.8 lens. That is probably my next camera purchase when I have the money, then the D300 body unless something else comes out before then.
I take concert photos, drag racing photos and some portraits and anything else. A few photos.

I love all of your pictures!! FH and I actually JUST bought a camera yesterday! Before then, we just had a point and shoot. We bought the new Canon Rebel XSi. We've been having a lot of fun using it.. but there is so much to learn!! We've been trying to figure out how to use it and have been experimenting with some of the features. I've literally been taking pictures of EVERYTHING!!
Here are some of the pictures I've taken in the past two days. I'm just getting started!

I used my 18-135mm Nikkor lens 1.3-5.6G.... and the camera was on 'night' setting. Interestingly, I didn't have my tripod with me and was able to stabilize the camera on my knee for the most part. (much of the time when I take pics at night if I don't have a tripod they come out blurry since the shutter stays open longer to catch the image and it's hard to hold it steady!)

I just read in the thread that you have a D40- I think they are similar in set up?
On my camera on the left ( when you are holding the camera like you are going to take a shot) there is a dial It has an 'auto' setting in green and settings "M" "A" "S" and "P", and a few other settings. The 'night' setting is the one with the half moon and the building on it.

My friends who just had a baby got the D40 (I recommended it to them). It is a GREAT camera! The D80 is very pricey (it was a gift to me from FH as a graduation present!) and if I had bought it myself I probably would have gotten the D40.
Nikon makes a good solid camera.

oh thank you so much for your help....I think I tried the moon dial one of the weekend and the picture came out dark....can you use that on automatic with the moon selected? you know so much about the camera...now I'll definitely be coming to you for questions....oh I definitely love my camera but I just need to tinker around with it to get use to all its functions...... So if I did use the night setting then the picture should show up clear then? Because I was trying to take a picture of an Elk and it was just about dark outside......

LOL!
I really don't know that much at all- anything I've learned is just from playing around with the camera. I have yet to take a class (although I'd love to!) or even read the book that came with the camera. I bought a book about the Nikon D 80 but haven't read it either. All I do is point and shoot.
As far as I know, the 'night' setting is mostly automatic in that it focuses and sets itself. If it was dark and you had no light source that is probably why it didn't work. The fireworks themselves are light sources so that might be why they came out so well. From what I understand, the difference is that when it is dark, the shutter stays open longer to capture the image, and if you move even a little bit your image will be blurred- that's why a tripod comes in handy- it's almost impossible to stay that still!
I haven't worked outside in the dark much but when I am inside and the lighting is poor I have a Nikon Speedlight SB600 add on flash that brightens up the area/subject that I am trying to photograph.

Were these by any chance taken at a campground in Jersey? Dumb question I'm sure but the display looks exactly like what I watched over the weekend.

I don't consider myself to have reached amateur status as of yet, since I don't own a decent camera. However, I'm learning what I can until I get enough saved for a Canon 40D. I was on track to get one this year, until our Powerbook died and I had to replace the computer. That blew my budget. A digital camera does no good without a computer, eh?
Anyway, the following I took with both a Sony Cybershot, and a friend's Nikon D40. I tend to like still life, and nature type shots.

High Five for the Nikon!! :) I have a D70 and my sister has a D80 I use a lot. I'd like to get the D300 but all my savings is going toward wedding funds. I like my D70 but man the D80 is SOOO nice with the larger LCD screen. I've gotten some great shots with my D70 so I can't complain.

The photography industry has a term for this: "Photographer's Child Syndrome."
It's when your kid gets so tired of being a model and living their life under the lens that they can't stand cameras anymore! Luckily for us, our "children" are animals and don't really care.

The cameras capability, the Photographers Capability, and the Capability of your Photo editing program. I Have Photoshop CS3 and its like my other love.

Oh and alot of people say "oh I have a sucky point and shoot, thats why my photos look horrible". NOT TRUE. I have taken SO many nice photos with a simple 5.1 megapixel Point and shoot. I Upgraded to My Canon Rebel XTi SLR because It broadened my horizon so to speak. It set my goals higher and made it a little easier to achieve. But Please dont ever say I cant take good photos because I have a crappy Point and shoot, because its not always the camera, its the person behind it!

Yeah, what she said ;)
The better the camera and lens' and the better the shooter knows how to use them (or edit them), the better your shots will be :)
But yeah, you can still get pretty great shots with a point and shoot if you do it right! The delay bugs me though; I want to upgrade one day when I get some money :p

Yep- I got my start with a cheap Kodak digital camera and then an Olympus 4.1 MP point and shoot before I got my Nikon D80 18 months ago.
The Nikon helps in that it is fast and can capture 4-5 shots per second so I don't miss anything where my older camera wasn't as rapid fire, and the shots are clearer with the 10.1 megapixels, but I still got some beautiful shots with my older cameras too.
These are some pics I took with my old Olympus 4.1 point and shoot back in the day..
