This is so embarrassing...lol...but have any of you ever gotten the hair above your upper lip waxed? My hair is pretty dark, so my "mustache" shows up a little in certain lights. I keep it trimmed with an electric bikini shaver type thing, but I've had a couple different waxers at nail salons as me if I wanted it waxed...so I guess I'm not doing a very good job...lol. I'm really nervous about waxing it though. I get my eyebrows done already and I'm scared about it growing back darker or making it more noticeable or something...I dunno. Any advice?

With every year that passed my hair on my head got darker and hair appeared on my upper lip.
I bleached it at first and I have waxed it at home. Either I am not very good at waxing it or the product isn't very good because it takes me at least 4-5 passes to get all the hair. I prefer having it waxed at a salon - one swipe and it's gone!
I have also had it "threaded" and I have plucked the odd hairs ..... the only thing I haven't done is shave it because I didn't want any kind of stubble. I don't find waxing nearly as painful as having my legs waxed (won't do that again!!!!) or having my upper lip threaded.
A friend told me that the more you wax it the less it comes in - but I am not quite convinced :) I don't find that it comes in any thicker but it does seem to grow in at odd angles so some hairs might stick up.
I want to try lazer hair removal next but I understand that it's best to do this in the fall/winter because it's not good to expose the treated areas to the sun???? I am just sick and tired of having to do anything about it.
I also figure that all the pulling from waxing or threading could be stretching the skin and since I am getting older ... lol my skin doesn't bounce back quick. I don't want to cause any more wrinkles than need be.

I use a hair removal cream from Sally Hansen and it works great. I can go a good two weeks before I have to do it again, and it takes only 6 minutes to work. I have to be careful about where I put the cream. If I get it on my skin in a place that doesn't have hair, it tends to get a little red, like a rash, but I'm getting better and better with it.
Also, I seem to get little bumps or tiny zits on my lip now. FH thinks it might be from opening up that pore, or just the hairs growing back weird... but I don't know if it would be the same or different than if I waxed.
I can't tell you the frustration I've had since the stupid steroids I took. I have random hairs in the typical "guy" places on my face now - chin, cheeks, & upper lip. I've literally just been plucking them all out. I'm hoping it's not a permament change. I've never gotten anything waxed! I'm too scared. :ooh:

Waxing is supposed to make hair grow back thinner, actually. It depends on certain people though. Shaving will make it grow back thicker, so deff. don't do that.
I'd get it done now, to see how you like it. Then when your wedding comes up, a few weeks before (like three weeks.), do it again if you like it.

The place i have been getting my eyebrows waxed at for a couple years, always ask if i wanted my lips done. I said no each time cuz i had a fear of it growing back darker, thicker.
she said i have a shawdow (and i do) so that is the only reason i waxed it for the wedding.
well i finally let her do it 2 weeks before the wedding and i had to do a touch up before the wedding. It takes awhile to grow back. I now get the lips waxed about once a month. It grows back thinner and it is actually the same color, you can just bleach it (what i used to do) so it is not as noticeable.
i also had my my armpits waxed (no 5'oclock shadow on my wedding pictures) and that hair has actually grown back thinner and lighter
I have very coarse dark hair.
I am glad I did it. The worst part for the armpits is letting the hair grow. I might not do it anymore for the summer, but i could do it in the winter though.

I just use epilator. I think it's less scary than waxing, even if it takes a few short tries to get everything.

i get my upper lip waxed. when you wax stuff, its supposed to make future hair lighter. it works though. the first time it hurts. your lip will feel numb but after a while it's not bad.

I've attempted waxing it myself but it hurt quite bad and brought tears to my eyes. I found it to be way more painful than waxing my legs 'cause there's so many hairs in one little area. I may have to try the Sally Hansen stuff.

I have waxed my upper lip a few times, its a little painful but only for a moment. A couple of times that i did it I got pimples all over my upper lip. I use cream more often than waxing.
Shaving for facial areas is a no no!
I even use cream for my eyebrows, just to clean the area above the nose.

Just sitting here reading these posts and it occurred to me
1. Yeah I am NOT alone!
2. Do the guys have any idea of all the little (and sometimes painful) things we do to look attractive to them????

Unfortunately, I inherited a hairy upper lip from my mother and yes, I do get it waxed. Just like a bikini wax it hurts the first couple times but if you keep doing it consistently it becomes less painful.

I use the Sally Hansen Cream as well. I've waxed and used other creams but my skin is so sensitive it actually burned sores into my skin...But the Sally Hansen works amazingly!

Thanks for all of the advice you guys! I think I'll give waxing it a shot the next time I go to get my eyebrows waxed. It can't hurt any more than that does! lol

Dont worry about the people at the salon! they are just trying to make money!! I get my leg waxed twice a year and eyebrows once a month so they can shape them since I can trim and pluck when I need to.
I like the waxing because its quick and easy! All my hairs grow back really FINE and rarely noticeable.
You should just try it once and see how it goes.

I used to get my eyebrows waxed but I have such pale/sensitive skin that the area that was waxed would be bright red for like 2 days later, I normally shave my upper lip but I'll have to look into the Sally Cream since it's got so many great reviews!
Just a few general hair facts:
Shaving doesn't make hair grow in thicker/darker when you cut a strand of hair you're cutting off the tapered end of the hair and making the shaft appear to be thicker. It's impossible for cutting/shaving to make your hair thicker though as the thickness of your body hair is determined by your body's personal make up; not how/if the hair is cut.
Waxing being that it pulls hair out from the root is supposed to help eventually thin out growth because apparently the root just stops trying to grow hair from a follicle that just gets ripped out after a while. I say apparently because I had my bushman eyebrows waxed every two weeks for 6 years straight and the overgrowth never got any better :sob:
I have really thin hair and have researched it up and down how to grow/the properties of hair and all that jazz, so you could say I'm obsessed with that too ^^;

Well...
1. I shave or pluck.
2. I am waaaay too chicken to get waxed.
3. Ages ago I used that Epil Stop cream, and guess whose legs didn't react too well to it? MINE!!! Immediately afterwards, I kept breaking out with rashes on the shins of my legs, and ended up with a HORRIBLE staph infection on my left leg that was about the size of a shin guard that is used in soccer. So, I got to deal with being pregnant and horrible morning sickness, but I also got to get sick from a strong antibiotic because little did I know that the spray they told me to use on my leg to numb the pain I was allergic to, which gave me contact dermatitis on TOP of all that. Needless to say, after the scare of the staph going into my blood stream, and me freaking it would harm the baby, and after the pain of pouring hydrogen peroxide on my leg many times a day, not being able to walk on my leg and having panic attacks if I would lose my leg... I can HONESTLY SAY that I will NEVER EVER EVER use a cream again. You couldn't pay me enough to go through that again.

Welp, I got it waxed for the first time last Friday and it wasn't bad! It did feel numb/tingly for a few minutes and was red for about half an hour...but it looks great :)

I have brows and 'stache done and truthfully, after you've had it done a few times, it's not that bad. I even do my own 'stache every now and again with Sally Hanson pre-waxed strips.

Very cool! Welcome to the waxing side of things!
For anyone who is interested in at-home waxing, I use the Poetic waxing kit from Bliss (http://www.blissworld.com/product/code/POE-001A.do?showPrevNext=false) and it's fantastic! Easy to use at home and you don't need the strips. The wax shrink-wraps your hairs so your skin doesn't get so inflamed, either.
Also, NEVER get ANYTHING waxed around your period. Your skin is much more sensitive and you will be hurting! :bbcry:

Very interesting... I wouldn't have even thought to consider that!

I know this thread is a bit old but I just wanted to add that Avon has a really good facial hair removal cream. It is only about $3 (on sale right now, usually $6) and it works really well in a really short time- 2-3 minutes! They also sell a wax and other hair removal creams that work well. Compared to similar products I would say that this brand is less smelly and cheaper...definitely worth a try.

I used to use the extra strength bleach from Sally Hansen. But it never lasts that long. Not only do I have hair on my upper lip, but also very soft/fine hair under my chin, down my neck and on my cheeks too. Good Lord, I am the bearded lady.
Well I decided to try the Sally Hansen Extra Strength Cream hair remover. It didn't get all the hair on my lip even after eight minutes. (Which is as long as you can leave it on.) And it said to only use it once in 24 hours. So I waited and used it again today. Well the hairs are still there on the very sides above my lip, AND it made my skin bleed! In patchy little spots. Ugh, my lip is still tender. I've never plucked or waxed, so I have no idea why my hair is so resilient.
My mother swears by her "Epilady" I may have to try one. She says once you get brave and do it a few times it doesn't hurt badly.
