View Full Version : Has anyone here had a tonsillectomy?

I'm scheduled to have one next Thursday (May 29th) and I'm TERRIFIED!! I have recurring strep (5 times in 1.5 years), and I get these things called tonsil stones. I also have swollen lymph nodes a lot! The reason I decided to have the surgery was because I will be a first year teacher starting in September, and I'm really concerned about getting strep. I can't afford to miss all of those days of school during my first year!

Anyway, I've been reading a ton of forums where people have talked about having it, and they have scared me to death. Most everybody says its excruciating pain for 2 weeks. My doctor described it as "miserable," but I really feel like it will be worth it in the long run. I guess I'd rather have two weeks of awful pain than have a lifetime of strep and tonsil stones.

Luckily, FH will be on vacation for 10 days following my surgery, so I'll have him home with me. I feel bad that instead of doing fun things on his vacation, he's going to be stuck home with a miserable fiance. I know he doesn't mind and he would rather be home with me than at work, but still.

So I guess I'm looking for somebody to tell me that their experience wasn't that bad.. haha. I just need some comfort.

I had them taken out when I was 14 .... and I can't lie - it wasn't fun.

My neck was super stiff and sore. I found out later why - during the operation your head is tilted back off the end of the operating table so that they have full access to your mouth. They may do it differently now.

If you have ever had a really bad sore throat (like with strep), the pain is rather like that. It may take longer to "heal" the older you are but I still don't think you will be in pain for longer than 24 - 48 hours. If you are, ask for meds!!!!! :)

My throat was sore ... REALLY sore and I didn't want to eat - not jello, not popsicles or anything for 36 hours or so. It also hurt to swallow water so I swished and spat for the first 24 hours. With that said, I certainly wasn't in excruciating pain for 2 weeks! I think that person was exaggerating!

The good news - I haven't had strep throat or tonsillitis since and that is a GOOD thing :)

That's awesome that you haven't had strep or tonsillitis since you've had them out! I hope that will be the case for me as well.

It wasn't just one person that said they were in pain for that long though, it was lots! I've read over 20 stories of people so far (all over the age of 20). They were all talking about taking different pain medications too, and most said they were still in pain.

I do know that the longer you wait to have them removed, the more it hurts and the longer it takes to recover (my doctor told me that part)

I know that it's different for everybody! I'm just hoping I'm one of those people who recover quickly.

Yeah maybe so ... but who do you want to believe - me? or them? Maybe they weren't given the REALLY good pain meds.

By the time you find out for yourself it will be too late to turn back anyhow. Just don't let the fear of pain be a reason to chicken out.

The same could be said about childbirth ... some will say it was the WORST pain in the world ... others will say it felt like cramps. It's all about your body, your pain tolerance, your flair for the dramatics  and your perception of the pain :)

haha... very true... and I'll admit that I'm definitely one to be dramatic when I'm not feeling well. I don't do pain very well.

I won't chicken out... I'm just looking for somebody to lie to me and tell me that I'll be eating steak the next day.:D

I had mine taken out when I was in 8th grade, so I was fairly young and I don't recall any pain at all. I actually thought it was pretty cool, I was totally pampered by my parents, got presents, I even went home from the hospital that night, so no extended stay there.

After the anesthesia was administered I remember seeing the lights in the ceiling roll by as I was being wheeled to surgery and had no recollection, not even of the passage of time until I woke up in recovery, I remember my mouth being very dry, so they gave me ice chips. I went to a regular room, probably given ice cream and jello and was released that night. I can't remember what I ate in the days following, so that wasn't even that bad.

I think I had it done on a Thurs and I am pretty sure I was even back in school on the following Monday, so I even healed quickly.

So no worries, I am sure you will be fine! I can't be sure, but I believe mine were removed with a laser of some sort, which I guess is less painful than a "knife".

I had this surgery when I was 7 and I dont remember much. Afterwards and untill now I can drink cold water in winter without the danger of having a sore throat.

When I get a cold and if it leads to a sore throat its because of farynggitis meaning a disease of the lower part of the throat. I hope I make sense.
In that case, I want to drink all cold water, ok not frozen, but cold. Tea and hot drinks dont do for me.

I am sorry I cant help you anymore with the surgery procedure, I dont remember if I had pain, but I guess if it was a lot I would remember. The same day after the surgery they gave me ice cream!:D

I had my tonsils and adenoids removed when I was 5. All I remember is getting jello and ice cream. I do remember getting in trouble for goofing off and falling out of the hospital bed. Sorry, I know I wasn't much help but wanted to share what I remember of my experience.

I still have them and wish I had gotten them out when I was younger. I also get tonsil stones.. yuck! I can completely understand why you'd want to get them out.

On a side note... never try the juice that they sell for babies. For some reason, my friends and I once thought it would be a bright idea to buy baby apple juice. It was pretty nasty stuff.

I've always had horrible throat problems, used to get strep all the time, and I also have those tonsil stones. FH and I call them "white nasties" --- ICK! Anyway, I'm having my tonsils out June 5, so I can't tell you firsthand. What the doctor told me is that it will be painful and it just depends, sometimes day 5 is WAY worse than day 2 afterwards. He said plan on a good week of being useless. Also said it's important to eat because your body needs food to heal, and no ice cream because its too creamy and would make it yucky back there. And no, I don't think "yucky" was his exact word :) Anyway, good luck!

Okay, since no one here can give you an accurate account of the aftermath of a tonsillectomy as an adult, i will fill you in... i had mine taken out when i was 25... I honestly can tell you it was the most awful time of my entire life... I was in the most excruciating pain... it hurt more than anything in the world... it felt like someone shoving knives into your ears and throat... the meds given to me were not strong enough to last long enough.. it lasted for 2 hours and then the other 4 till i could take it again was pure misery... i know it sounds scary, but i do have advice for you... don't believe the hype regarding icecream and jello... the colder things you swallow, the worse it will be... have someone make for you or buy chicken/vegetable/soup BROTH ONLY... this will be your best friend... the warm liquid will soothe your throat and the more liquid you drink, the less dehydrated you will be and the less pain you will have... if you don't do this in the very beginning, you will have a very hard time to start because it will hurt a lot to swallow the longer you wait to actually do it... i wish the best.. P.S- best diet i was ever on... LOL... lost 14 pounds in 1 week after the surgery... down side is that it comes right back.. lol...
good luck..

Ah! That definitely does not sound like fun. Thanks for the advice on the cold stuff... I was definitely planning on stocking up on ice cream.

I was thinking of drinking slim fast during the first week so that I can make sure that I'm still getting vitamins and stuff. I haven't asked my doctor about it yet though, so I'm not sure if thats something he would recommend.

Thanks to everybody else for sharing your own memories!! I really have to stop reading stuff about it on the internet.. I'm freaking myself out.

i personally haven't had mine taken out but i'm a nurse so i know a lil about it. I'm sure the pain depends on the person. everyone feels pain differently, and i'm positive they will give you pain meds if you start to feel that bad. My piece of advice is if they give you any kind of pain medicine whether it be tylenol or something stronger, start taking it right away whether it is hurting you alot or not. Its better to stay infront of the pain than for it get too bad because then it's harder to get it back undercontrol. They may also give you a lidocaine swish and swallow which will numb your throat. I wouldn't worry about it too bad. the anticipation is worse than the actual procedure. good luck!

I had mine out when I was 6. That was almost 18 years ago and the way things are done now might be alot better and less painfull. I don't remember much, but what i do is.. When I woke up my mouth and throat were so dry I couldn't swallow and it freaked me out, It felt like I had a door in my throat ( don't ask I was 6 lol ). I remember getting sick from the gas they used to knock me out, i am sure they just use and IV now. I also remember being excited because everyone told me I would get to eat lots of ice cream, but once it was done I never even wanted any ice cream. Sorry I know thats not much help, I dont remember much other than it was painful, yet I also had my adnoids (sp?) taken out and tubes put in my ears. I do think stuff like this is better when you are younger, kids take things so much easier.

I have only had strep once since then ( last fall ), and it wasn't painfull at all, I didn't even know I had it, DH had it and I went to the dr. for what I thought was a sinus infection which turned out to be allergies + strep.

Well I had my surgery yesterday!

The worst part of the whole operation was getting the IV in my hand. I had never had one, and it hurt like crazy. They wheeled me into the operating room and I don't remember anything after that. Anesthesia is such a crazy drug.

I woke up coughing like crazy.. I'm not sure if it was blood or mucus, but they gave me a drink and I was able to stop after a few minutes. Once I was awake, they rolled me into the recovery room where I was given popsicles, water, and was able to watch Home Alone. They called Matt in and he sat in a rocking chair next to me. I was required to stay in recovery for at least an hour.

My throat was really sore and really swollen.. it felt like I had swallowed a huge rock and it was just sitting there. My teeth and my ears were killing me and I could hardly talk. My head was throbbing, but the recovery room was loud and busy so it was difficult to go back to sleep. They asked me to rate my pain, and then they gave me some liquid vicodin. That did wonders for me!! The pain went away for the most part (unless I was swallowing), but I still felt the lump in my throat.

There was a little kid next to me that had just come out of the operating room as well, he was probably like 6 or 7.. and he was bouncing around on his bed, singing, and talking nonstop to his parents!! I was so jealous. He was completely fine.

Anyway, I managed to get up and pee after an hour (they make sure you go before they let you leave). Then when I came back they took a look at my throat to make sure everything looked ok (it's black from being cauterized, and there is white mucus everywhere, and you can tell that its swollen). Then they told Matt to go get the truck and pull it up to the front of the hospital, and that I would be out in a few minutes. They took my IV out, which was relieving, but it also hurt like whoa. Then I stood up to get dressed and after getting halfway done, I almost passed out. I got really dizzy and nauseous and started to sweat. I laid down on the bed and waited for the nurse to come back. She checked my blood pressure and it was really really low, so they decided to give me a shot in my thigh to control the "fainting" feeling. I guess it makes your heart rate fly up (mine was 115 resting), and it keeps the blood in your head. That seemed to help a lot.

Poor Matt though. He was out there waiting for me thinking I would be out in 10 minutes, and I ended up being in there for another half an hour because they had to make sure the shot took well.

Anyway, I was feeling okay enough to go to wegmans with Matt to get my prescriptions. They gave me amoxicillin for my antibiotic and liquid vicodin for my pain killer. If you have a choice of medication.. go with the vicodin!! It has been so great to me. You can take it every 4 hours, and around the 3.5 hour mark I start to feel more pain, but it's definitely manageable until I can take more medicine.

So, day 1 I felt much better than I had expected. I slept for about 2 hours (but woke up every 20 minutes from my own snoring (because my throat is so swollen), and every time I woke up I had to pee very urgently!! The IV fluids and all of the water I had been drinking had definitely begun to catch up to me. I surprisingly wasn't too tired yesterday, and I was able to sit up on the couch and watch tv with matt. I also was able to go out with him to get him a pizza for dinner (that wasn't very nice of him, by the way, it smelled so good and I couldn't have it!! But I understand that he has to eat!) I was able to eat sherbet, popsicles, and I even had some chicken noodle soup. The noodles went down fine as long as I chewed them into nothing, but the chicken got stuck in my throat and made it very difficult to swallow for about 20 minutes. So WBandMe, I wouldn't recommend the chicken, for a few days anyway! My doctor told me to make sure any soup that I ate was cooled to room temp or else it would burn really badly.

I slept well last night, but I set my alarm for every 4 hours so that I could keep on my medication. From everything that I read, people said that it is much better to wake yourself up to take your medicine, than to wait until the morning. If you wait, you could be really sorry because the medicine is more effective if you use it before the pain begins. It doesn't work as well when you're already in pain and try to take it. So I made the decision to wake myself up so that I don't have to deal with overwhelming pain when I wake up.

I also used a humidifier, which seemed to help A LOT! My throat wasn't too dry when I woke up. I made sure to drink lots of water each time I got up to take my medicine to make sure that my throat stayed moist.

Today I'm in a little bit more pain, but I think the swelling has gone down a bit. Everybody has told me to expect the pain to really start on Day 3. Hopefully I'm an exception though! I can definitely deal with the pain that I have now. It's not pleasant, but it's manageable.

Anyway, I told you guys that I would let ya know how I did, especially WBandMe since you're having yours out next week! I'll let ya know if I get any worse/better in the next few days.

My ex had one when he was 17. They had to do it emergency style because they were blocking 85% of his airway by the time the HMO would agree to pay for it.

He got really skinny after that, he couldn't eat solid foods for a long time. They had him on Tylenol 3 so he slept a lot too.

I hate to say it but he has gotten strep since then...

Well I'm still not doing too bad! I've had some painful moments (when I wake up in the middle of the night with a very dry throat and very bad earaches), but other than that I'm doing so much better than expected.

I was so nauseous and weak yesterday because I hadn't been eating (there aren't many choices when you can't eat solid food!!)... so I had Matt take me to Panera Bread and I was able to eat some baked potato soup in a bread bowl. The bread was edible after I let it soak for some time, and then chewed it forever! The meal was really rough on my throat, tongue, and ears, but it felt so good in my stomach!

Later on last night I had some mashed potatoes and gravy from KFC. It's definitely painful to eat, but it's so worth it. I only slept for about 3 hours total during the day yesterday, which was less than the first two days. I've been soooo itchy the past few days all over my body. I think it might be the vicodin. I don't have any other side effects so I'm not sure if I'm allergic to it or what? It works so well though, I don't want to give it up!!!

I thought that I would be in so much more pain right now than I am. So I would definitely recommend to drink as much water as possible. If you're awake, you should be drinking something. I really feel like that is what has made the difference with me. Also, you should make sure that you eat something with substance, even if it's a little hard. The nausea just makes everything ten times worse. I would say that right now, I feel better than I do when I get strep throat.:bbeek:

I hope that your experience is as good or better than mine!! It's definitely manageable.

I'm late, but glad to hear things went well for you. I had mine out when I was 18 and my sister had hers out when she was 20. My mom asked many times when we were younger to get them out but the Dr. wouldn't. Later we switched Dr.'s and I got bad strep and my new Dr. suggested I get it done. I was SOOO thankful because I too had those white stone things that are GROSS. I was able to use my finger to remove them, so gross I know. It was one of the best things I did getting them out. I can breath so much better and I don't snore anymore (that much haha). My aunt had hers out a few years ago and she was in her 40's.

Like you have found out and others mentioned the more you drink the better. I think i was taking a drink every few minutes I swear. If it got dry it hurt more, so I kept drinking, drinking and drinking fluids.

Okay, so days 5-7 (today) have been completely miserable. I am in so much pain that I feel like I'm going to throw up sometimes. Sleeping only makes it worse. I dread going to bed at night because I know I'm going to wake up in pain.

My ears and teeth are killing me, and my throat of course. I'm pretty sure that the scabs are starting to form, which is what is causing the pain. I haven't been able to eat hardly anything these past 3 days.

I'm just waiting for this to start getting better. It feels like this has been going on forever and I'm surprised I haven't burst out into tears yet. I just have no energy to do anything. I feel awful for FH having to spend his whole vacation sitting at home taking care of me. :sob:

Wow, I probably shouldn't have read the above post last night. I went and got mine done today...all morning I kept contemplating backing out. Then I had transferred to the operating table and I remember looking up at the ceiling and at the nurse and thinking "It's not too late; I can still get out of this." Then at one point I vaguely remember rubbing my eye and getting told not to. Then it was "Kristen, Kristen, you're done." So, I guess it's too late to back out now lol. Pain is tolerable today but gets pretty bad when I swallow. It's SO dry in there and that's the most miserable part. Also my pain pills and antibiotics aren't particularly fun to swallow. Ugh. Oh well, that's my update. I've been snoozing on and off since I got home, and I think it's about time to go back "on" :)

Kristen- your doctor gave you pills?? That's nuts! I have liquid Vicodin.. you should ask for liquid if you're having trouble with the pills. I can't imagine swallowing pills right now. Swallowing the liquid is still hard, because swallowing in general is hard, but I would think it would still be better than pills.

Sorry to scare you with my post! I'm glad I didn't cause you to back out of it.

I'm feeling a little bit better today, but still in a lot of pain. I have 3 days left on my pain medicine, so I'm hoping that I feel good enough by then.

Hmm that's weird. I do have a really big bottle of vicodin, and I have to go back to the pharmacy every 3 days to get a refill. It's kind of annoying, but worth it so that I don't have to swallow pills. I guess they can't give me more than 3 days worth at a time because it's a controlled substance. They're really sketchy about it too... yesterday I went to get my last refill, and I still had a few mL left in the bottle, but I knew I would run out in the middle of the night and I wanted to make sure that I didnt miss a dose... they asked me all of these questions about why I was back so soon and had to okay it with like 8 people before they gave it to me.

Also, I get mine from Wegman's pharmacy, and there are two near my house. I originally had it filled at the Wegmans that is further away from where I live, so I tried to go to the closer one the second time around, and they wouldn't transfer the prescription because it's a controlled substance. So every 3 days I have to drive 25 minutes to a pharmacy.

The pill swallowing is REALLY bad today. They have me on amoxicillin pills that are HUGE but luckily the pharmacist said it's okay if I crush them. The vicodin ones are smaller and MORE tolerable, but that's not saying much. At this point I'm regretting the whole thing. I hope it gets better soon.

If you keep getting sick from it you might want to call and ask if he can give you something different to try!

I had awful allergies before I got my tonsils out.. I would sneeze alll day long. I haven't sneezed one time in 10 days! I don't know if it's because of my pain meds, or because my tonsils are gone. That would be awesome if it cured my allergies!

Hang in there, it's worth it in the end. My cousin is going to the Dr. and may get hers out. I'm going to recommend it to her. It's SOOO much better after.

I've noticed that I haven't sneezed either, and I always have really bad allergies. He took my adnoids out too, so I don't know how that affects it. The ultimate test will be going to my best friends house when I'm feeling better--she has 2 dogs and 7 cats. Then I'll REALLY see if the allergies have changed lol. Anyway, still in pain today. Swallowing is torture and I'm just getting plain tired of taking all these pills. I feel like as soon as my throat has recovered from getting one down I have to take another. Blah. Anyway, the days are passing....

i was suppposed to have mine taken out and the doc said i would be in huge pain for 2 weeks. she said i wouldn't be able to swallow and thats when i decided not to do it. my tonsils kept getting infected and i couldn't eat or drink. i was waking up in the middle of the night crying all the time too. they kept giving me all these anti-biotics and vicodin but nothing was helping. i delt with it for a lil over a month before it finally went away. my work back then didn't think that was good excuse and still made me work. i think that's why i never got better till a month later. i'm so glad i left them. i haven't had it since though. but still, i wouldn't ever wanna go through that again! if it ever comes back, i'm going to skip those anti-biotics and just get them cut off.

Aw, I'm sorry that you're feeling so bad. Days 5-8 were the worst for me. So hopefully you'll start to feel better in the next couple of days.

I am almost completely recovered!!! I still have some pain in my throat and my ears when I swallow, and it hurts really bad to yawn, laugh, or sneeze (yes, the sneezing has returned:bbcry:). Other than that, I'm eating pretty normal now... I can eat pretty much anything as long as I chew it forever.

Sad news... I didn't lose any weight!! I was really hoping that I would, because I can definitely afford to lose a good 10-15 pounds. I'm not sure why I didn't... because my eating was very limited every day and I went for walks when I was able to, to keep from going crazy. Oh well... I guess I have to lose it the right way.. haha.

Anyway, I am so glad that it's almost over with. I don't ever want to experience pain like that again!! I hope you start feeling better soon!

I had mine taken out when I was 9. It was not that bad, I just ate a lot of ice cream.
