Ok, today I went to the pet store for the dog and was heading to the check-out to leave when the Betta fish caught my eye. A couple years ago I kept Bettas and they're pretty cool fish, though I haven't had one in a long time because they don't live that long -- 18-24 months after you buy them, and I hate fish funerals!

But I know our older (he's almost 12) cat is bored because nobody's home during the day, and I miss having a Betta around, and my fiance's nickname is Fish, so I've been thinking about getting another one.

I wanted to wait until we moved into the new house (only a few weeks away, now, hope the FHA stuff happens sooner rather than later!) to set up the 5 gallon Betta aquarium I have because it takes a while for the tank's water to get right, and to balance all the bacteria and get rid of the natural ammonia in tap water etc (I condition the water, but it still takes a few days) -- and because it really stresses a fish out to be moved in a car --

But I am also getting sick of putting my life on hold because we *might* be moving.

And today, right there in the front, there was a very rare BLACK crowntail Betta fish! In Petco, of all places! And for only $6! Most places sell black Bettas for $50 or more, because the black color is rare, but Petco had one! Granted, he's not ALL black, which might be why he was in with the Petco fish, but he has a little bit of iridescent blue in his fins. I like it, it looks really nice, and kind of breaks up the black.

Needless to say, I bought him! No pics yet, because I had to buy a temporary smaller setup (which I'll put him in when I clean the big tank) as a temporary home for the next two months, until we move and the big 5 gallon is ready. Right now the smaller set-up is doing its thing, but I expect I can put the Betta into his setup tomorrow evening.

I should have pics in the next couple of days. I have already named him Tornado (at the store he wasn't moving a lot but that's because the store is kept WAY too cold for these fish, they need 78'-80'F to thrive . . . our home is pretty much naturally about 80'F, so he should be ok until he moves into his permanent tank -- that one has a heater) and he's really pretty.

Pictures as soon as Tornado settles in!

I used to have a beta too but I move too often now to keep one. I can't wait to see pics of him! Congrats on your new family member.

I totally love it that you know all about the temps and that you're going to put your new little friend in a bigger tank! I was thinking about having the Bettas in the cute little bowls at our wedding until I did research and read about how that wasn't a healthy environment. I never had a clue! I'm so glad that you finally got a pet. They're so nice to have!

Awesome! It also sounds like you know what you are doing with fish :) which really excited me haha.

I hate hearing about people running out and buying fish and then tossing them in a new tank that hasn't been cycled etc. Or keeping the bettas in small vanity tanks, ugh!

So congratulations on the new fishy! He found a good home :D
