View Full Version : FH had a seizure last night

Two weeks ago, FH noticed his urine was a dark brown and his stomach/groin area really hurt. He never takes time off of work, but he was so uncomfortable/weak/tired that he took two days off and basically slept the whole time. Finally we went to the Urgent Care (FH doesn't have insurance - agh!) and the doc said the dark brown color was blood in his urine, and he probably had a kidney stone, but that you can't tell for sure unless you have a cat scan, which is really expensive - especially without insurance!
Well, FH just drank a lot of liquids and finally his stomach stopped hurting and he felt better. The past few days he hasn't had a hint of any problems, so we assumed it had broken down and passed.
WELL - this morning around 2:30, I woke up because I had to use the bathroom, and it was really hot in the bedroom and I turned on the fan. When I came back to bed, FH was curled up and crying and kind of whimpering. He was in THAT much pain. I NEVER hear him complain, he never takes medicine, nothing. So I knew he was really hurting. I get up to get him a Vicodin, which the doctor had prescribed a couple weeks ago, that FH never took.
When I get back, FH is making a grunting noise, and I put on my glasses... HE WAS HAVING A SEIZURE!!! :sob: His eyes were rolled back, his face pale, and he was kind of stiff, but twitching a little bit, if that makes sense. He's had them before... about four years ago was the last one (rather, two, right in a row - I witnessed - he's also had seizures when before he met me when he broke his arm, pierced his bridge (the top part of your nose), got a shot)... I guess the pain was so bad that his body shut down. When other people would pass out, FH has a seizure.
It was so scary. I didn't know what to do... when he woke up , he realized what had happened. Usually he can feel them coming on, but this time he didn't. We decided to call 911 if he had another one, but thankfully he didn't. I ended up coming to work, relunctantly, and I hope he decided to stay home from work today.... I know he was feeling better, but if it really is a kidney stone, I know it'll just get worse. GAH... so scary... I just wanted to stay home with him and make sure he was alright... I really hate seeing him in pain, and the seizures really scare me... :bbsad:

That's the only guess we have, but we dont' really know.
I've been calling him every couple hours... I want to call him every couple minutes! Last time I called, around 9am, he said he had another bad episode, but not quite as bad as at 2:30... I get done teaching at 2:05, and I'm going home right after that to be with him.

Oh dear! I'll be praying for you and your FH. I know all too well about seizures! My brother (the one i'm closest to) has epilepsy, so I am witness to many of those episodes! They are all scary to watch, especially when they are bad. I hope that your FH gets better!

eek! My fh had a kidney stone before and the doctor said that kidney stones were worse than child labor (but the doctor was a male...). My fh was in really big pain.
Hopefully your fh has a kidney stone and nothing worse. Even better yet, hopefully, he has nothing serious at all. I hope he feels better.

Sorry to hear about this, hope he gets better soon!
If he has had another seizure you should probably see a Dr again; I don't know much about seizures, but I hear that multiple ones, especially close together can be really bad.
If it is in fact a Kidney stone it can take time to pass on its own; once the stone is in the bladder the only other pain would be when it passes, again could take days. Usually the worst pain is when the stone passes through the ureter (sp?) to the bladder (this is why there would be blood in the urine). But then it could also be too big to pass on it own; if it is the latter then he would need medical help to break it up or in some cases surgery is required to remove it.
But it the pain is from some other unknown issue it is likely to get worse until you figure out what it is and deal with it.
Is there some local clinic you guys could go to and have him checked out and maybe have them bill you and make payments?
All the best to you guys

Are the benefits from your school district automatic once you get married, meaning can you go down and take your paperwork and enroll him? I know it is Union so you get them for him, but we have to do it during the open enrollment period.
If they are auto, maybe you should get married SOON (don't tell anyone) like tomorrow and sign him up so he has benefits ASAP!
Good luck!
Is there anyone that can go over the house to be with him?
Wow I'm sorry to hear! I hope he starts feeling better :urgh: I'll be praying for you both!

As far as I know, and I've called home a few times today, he hasn't had another one, and we've decided that if he does, we'll go to the doctor.
I know that if we do go to the emergency room, they'll work with us and let us make payments. If we go to a doctor's office, they'll probably let us make payments, but they may end up sending us to the hospital anyway. So if we do need to go, we'll just head straight to the emergency room.

I just re-checked and here you can add a husband at ANYTIME! Something to think about just in case!

Because of the Domestic Partners Law you could add him if you are living together as man and wife in the eyes of the law. That is what RC and I did when I lost my job and insurance. Check into it. Seizures are nothing to play around with no matter what the cause. Make him go to the ER.
Wow, that is a very stressful situation. How scary. I hope that he is doing better at this point.

Well, we're about to go to bed. FH stayed home from work today. I called every couple of hours to check in. No more seizures, thank goodness! He has felt very drained and weak, but was able to eat this evening and drink lots of liquids all day. I don't know if he's planning on staying home tomorrow or not, but he seems to be doing better. However, I know that if it's a kidney stone, he may be in the process of passing it for a while, so I'll just keep my eye on him. I think I asked him "How are you feeling" about three hundred times today!
But thanks to everyone for the well wishes! I told FH when I got home from work today, about 2:30pm, that he had a lot of prayers and thoughts coming towards him, from the ladies at OneWed.... he was like, "geez, you and that message board." :grinhappy:

So this morning, FH took a Vicodin. This for a man who neve takes aspirin for a headache, so I know he's feeling terrible. He's staying home from work again today, so hopefully by the time I get home he'll be feeling better.
I'm so sorry that you two are having to go through this! I'm so glad that he hasn't had anymore episodes. I hope that he continues to feel better day after day.
