Hi!

I'm new here. My FI and I are getting married October 4th of this year and we're having a Catholic ceremony at a Cathedral in our area. Have any of you ever been to/had a Catholic ceremony? Thoughts? I'm REALLY excited about everything, I just don't want the ceremony to drag and be boring.

Thanks!!

Just as there are many Catholic churches and just as there are many Catholic priests, there are just as many different types of Catholic services (even if they contain the same elements).

The priest would be the best one to answer your questions. He can tell you what his "typical service" is like. You can also talk to him about certain things that you would like to include in your service.

Oh yes .... Welcome to OW :)

I grew up catholic so I've been to a lot of catholic weddings. They are typically an hour long. You and your FH will do a whole mass with taking the communion and all. Have you started the classes yet?

I grew up Catholic too, but I haven't been to a wedding in years.
We took our one class yesterday. We just had to go for 8 hours. Are you having a Catholic wedding too?

No we're not. My FH is mormon (good mix right) Anyway, so we decided to go with a non-religious wedding cermony.

You and your FH will do a whole mass with taking the communion and all.

That is where you might be able to cut it shorter but it also might depend on the priest. I've been to a few Catholic weddings where communion wasn't served during the service. I believe the couples took communion beforehand.

My FH and I are having a Catholic ceremony. As I am not Catholic, however, we're opting for the shortened version that doesn't have Communion.

We had a catholic wedding ceremony! Are you having the mass and vows or just the vows?? We had the mass and vows and found it to be confusing! He pronounced us husband and wife and then instead of walking down the isle we had to go sit down because there was more mass to go! It was confusing but it turned out beautifully!!!

I am not catholic, but i have been to a ceremony.. Heh, they sung through the whole thing.. It was kind of boring (sorry!!).. Then again, it was a VERY richy-rich type wedding, so..

FH is Catholic (baptized and confirmed) and we are having a catholic ceremony. I thought that since I was never baptized we weren't going to be able to get married in a catholic church or have our marriage recognized by the catholic church.

But I spoke with the priest at a local church and he said that we would be able to get married in the church and have it recognized by the catholic church, but since I was never baptized we cant have the mass during the ceremony. We have to take some marriage classes through the church first which we will be starting soon.

Someone told me that with the mass the ceremony lasts for about an hour.

Do not worry about it being "boring". Most know that a Mass lasts an hour. Furthermore, this is THE MOST important part of the day, and it is a Sacrament, a Grace from God. How can that be boring? At least to you and your FH.

Communion was the most meaningful part of the Mass for my husband and me. It was the moment where we shared the Body and Blood of Christ for the first time as a married couple. What can be more beautiful, more meaningful? Yes, the vows were wonderful but the Eucharist was the most special part of the Mass. It always is for the two of us.

Good luck and God bless on you special day.

Hello & Congrats! FH and I are getting married in a Roman Catholic Church on 08/31/08 :D Since our wedding is on a Sunday we are not having a nuptial mass; just the ceremony (the priest has said this is common practice for the church and I have heard this from many people as well). A nuptial mass is usually around an hour as everyone has said; our wedding should be around 30 minutes as we are still having readings.

I'm so excited!

The same goes for me. We are going to have a Catholic ceremony with no mass. And he has to contact the church so that we can prepare for it. But we are also living togehter. >.< soo... I don't know if they will allow us to. But at least we can say that we tried. lol

We've been living together over 6 years and our priest didn't have an issue with it (thankfully). Hopefully yours won't either!
