View Full Version : Ebay question....

Alright, I'm not the MOST experienced Ebay buyer; I troll more than I actually buy and sell, so I've got a weird question:

I bought my wedding dress the other day; shipping listed on the auction was $13.95, shipment via Priority Mail coming from San Francisco. The seller has a great feedback rating, and has sold many other gowns before.

So I win the auction the other day, send payment via PayPal immediately, and I get an email from them confirming that it'll be shipping yesterday. Great!

So today I have an email from them today saying "Your item shipped out yesterday, but shipping ended up being more than expected, it actually came to $35.95, so we need you to pay the additional $22. Sorry for the inconvenience." Then they also sent me a money request via PayPal.

*HUH?*

I'm thinking "WTF!" Sounds like they're just ticked the dress sold as cheaply as it did, and they're trying to make up the difference in shipping. Or, if the dress WAS that expensive to ship, then hey, that's their problem, IMO... there's an option to have the buyer select the method of shipment and enter their zip code when they set up the auction, but they didn't do that, so I don't think I should be responsible for their mistake. Not to mention, they had already SHIPPED the dress when they asked for the additional $22, so it's not like I had an option to say "Hmmm... no thanks."

So for you more experienced Ebayers, what're my options here? I only have a feedback of like 3 on there, so I don't want a negative feedback, but at the same time, I didn't do anything wrong, IMO.... do I have any recourse with Ebay or PayPal here?

*shrug*

I have 102 feedback and one negative so I bought and sold a lot on ebay. I WOULD NOT pay that. Shipping is what is stated on their ad plain and simple. It isnt your fault that they dont know the shipping rates.

I would email them back and say sorry I am NOT going to pay for the shipping AFTER you get the dress. Wait until they leave you a feedback before you leave them one.

If they try to do a claim with paypal then you just state in there that they said shipping was this amount listed on the ad.

If you really want to make a big deal about it you can say I want my refund and you (them) HAVE to pay shipping for it to be returned.

You got to pay hardball with them. They could of put it in a Priority mail box like most people who ship dresses and pay $8.50.

At the most you will get a negative feedback from them but you only have 3 so its not like a lot lost. You can always create a new account. I hate when people try to rip other people off

Well I've tracked the item, and it IS in transit (*phew*), and I've fired off an inqiury to Ebay, so we'll see what they say on it. But no, I'm not paying it, no way, no how.... Grrrrrr....

If they already shipped it before they asked for the extra money, then don't worry about it! Once its shipped, its yours. Don't send them the other money, its not your problem. I'd just ignore them. If they keep "harrassing" you about it then I'd contact eBay. If they give you bad feedback, and that really bothers you, you can always make another account. Good luck, but don't send the extra money!

One thing that I sold actually costed more to ship than I charged them. I actually lost a little money, but hey, I didn't say, send me the difference! That was my fault, not theirs.

Nope. I sell on Etsy and on other selling sites. The shipping price is what it is, they have no way of getting more from you unless you willingly pay up.

We charge an average price to ship our platters. I pay more than what I get for orders that ship far away but I end up making a few dollars on the orders that ship to locations which are closer to us.

I have made mistakes re: custom orders .... I quoted $19.95 for the last platter I sent out. It was headed to CO (about as far away from us as you can get) but it also had to go in a larger box than I first expected. It ended up costing me $34.95 to ship it. I didn't even think to ask the buyer for more .... it was my stupid mistake but one that I won't make again :)

It's in transit ... don't worry about it.

BTW - you actually do have the option of saying no thanks. Follow the link in the email they sent and you can then refuse the PayPal request.

It's not a biggy if you aren't a regular ebay buyer but this vendor might give you negative feedback, in retaliation. If that happens, I would take it up with Ebay.

It's the seller's fault for not getting the correct price for shipping. I wouldn't pay it. If they give you bad feedback, take em up with Ebay. I've done that, where I listed shipping to be a LOT less than the actual shipping price - but I didn't charge the buyer for MY mistake.

well everything ended up fine...

I contacted Ebay, and they said they'll address it with the seller (but that due to privacy, they can't tell me what disciplinary action is taken, if any). But they said their policy on shipping charges is very clear, and to try to resolve it with the seller.

So I replied to the seller, quoting the section from Ebay's policies; I told them I'm very pleased with the dress, and if we can resolve this shipping issue, I intended to leave them positive feedback once they had done the same for me.

They responded back and said that's fine, and they'll leave positive feedback. So all's well that ends well. :D

Nope!! I just said I didn't feel it was right for them to expect me to pay it when the policy with regard to shipping is so clear. YAY!
