View Full Version : what to do about hair color?

A little under a year ago I decided to get my hair highlighted. I generally do not color my hair very much, but I felt like a change. Well of course I wasn't thinking ahead to my wedding and how I would want my hair to be for it! I didn't want to have to keep up the highlights and constantly get touch-ups, so in October I went to the hair salon and asked them to dye my hair back to my natural color. The hair color came out too dark but it has faded quite a bit and does look very close to my natural color. It is not exact though so you can tell a little (at least I can) that it is growing out.
So with that said, I don't want my hair to look bad for the wedding!! I don't want to get it dyed again, because I don't like to keep that kind of thing up. But I don't want to have a noticeable line where you can see my natural color at the top of my head and a different color lower down. What should I do? I wish I never got those highlights, then I wouldn't have this problem. Maybe I can try that temporary hair color that washes out in 30 shampoos? Have any of you tried that? What are some other options?

Well if you are worried about roots then you will need to dye it ;) If you don't want to keep dying it and the color you have now is not too much off your natural color then I would try one of those temp rinse things.
You can look at the store for a temp color, but if you want to make sure to get it the way you want I'd probably go to a pro. I would do it a month or so before the wedding to make sure you like it and then just touch it up again if you do.

I agree w/ Brandi. You really don't have any choice but to have it died again to get rid of the roots (unless you get your hair cut off right where the roots end hahaha). I'd be nervous about doing (even a temp) hair dye myself close to my wedding..so maybe do a 'practice run' now and see how the 30wash hair dye looks..and then redo around your wedding--or see your hairdresser about getting a professional temp.dye job.

there are glazes and toners that you can use on your hair if you don't want to fully dye it. i would recommend going to a beauty supply shop and have the people there direct you towards a good one, i would stick with clairol brand, the people there will know what you want and can help you..if you want to use the temporary dye to be sure to get the job done that's probably your best bet and i've used temporary color and it works just as well as permanent and it's less damaging on your hair.

Do NOT use over the counter stuff. That's what killed me. I got badgered into getting highlights and they looked horrible on me. So I went and had a salon dye my hair, it came out too light. Then I used over the counter, and that ended up looking ok, except it lifted the color out. And there is nothing worse than having your ends be lighter than your roots.
What you might want to do is what I essentially did. Find a salon you trust, and have them use demi-perminant dye on you. Do it right now. have the stylist write down exactly what he did. If you like it, get a tocuh up a week or so before the wedding, otherwise get it adjusted.
I know you don't want to dye it, but you can do it a few times before the wedding and then stop.
Or your other choice is to do a hairstyle where your roots are not showing.

Haha, I learned that lesson 5 or 6 years ago. This picture actually makes it look pretty good compared to how it actually was!

Anyway, how far will your roots have grown out by the time of the wedding? If it's a few inches you could put it in an updo that wouldn't make it so obvious that the color is different... but if they're not long enough or you don't want to do that... yeah, you're basically going to have to dye it again. At a salon!

See, that's what my hair resembled. And the ends looked very unhealthy. Took me 4 years to get it back to normal, where I don't need to dye it anymore

You can gust your roots touched up. They will put the dye on the roots for 10 - 20 mins and then work it through the rest of your hair and leave it for another 5-10 so that it will all blend. Any good pro can touch up your roots so that you won't have a line.

Thanks everyone. Those are some good options. I think the best for me would be to go to the salon to get semi permanent color or do the glaze and see how I like it. Then I could get it redone before the wedding.
Roots have grown out quite a bit now, the hair color was done 6 months ago!
