Great idea!
I wonder if you could find a hat box that is 8 sided and use that as a base? Michael's sells neat boxes too so you might find one there.
Octagon.. I'm sure you can find octagon box somewhere! Like Here (http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Moveo-Et-Proficio-Knox-New-York-Hat-Box-Octagon_W0QQitemZ8349133642QQihZ014QQcategoryZ7497 3QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQ_trksidZp1638.m118.l1247 QQcmdZViewItem) Price is outrageous, but I'm sure we can find one between all of us :)

 Quite a few sellers at ETSY don't seem to know that an octagon has 8 sides. I see a lot of hexagon boxes being passed of as octagon boxes - http://www.etsy.com/search_results.php?search_query=octagon+box&search_type=tag_title&order=&min=&max=&page=1
I found this - You can request a custom piece here - http://www.etsy.com/shop_alchemy.php?user_id=5436052 You might ask the vendor if she can make a much bigger box and add a slit in the top???

LOL I began to question myself .... nope 5 pentagon, 6 hexagon ..... 8 that is an octagon!
I found these instructions to DIY a small box. Perhaps you want to try to blow them up and try a larger one yourself?

This one has a video (but after watching it, LOL I think I would pay someone to make me a box instead )

Pretty but expensive (but you can use it afterwards to display your cake topper) It also brings up another idea .... who says your 8 sides box has to have 8 equal sides? - http://www.perfectweddingbox.com/product_info.php?products_id=72

That glass one is beautiful! You can use it to have your flowers preserved in as well! Or like SC said, you can put your cake topper in it!
