Gifts for new Moms-to-be?

I just learned that my niece is a new Mom-to-be (they were surprised too) :) I want to make her a nice card, but would also like to include some little thing for her. Did any of you Moms ever receive anything once you announced you were pregnant? (Don't mean to be shutting out the new Dad, but this is just a girly thing for now). Just would like some ideas to think about. :D

what about a nice maternity top or one of those chic pregnancy books (theres one called something like "pregnant and wearing high heels" or something that a girl @ school had and loved). Or a book for logging all the major pregnacy events. They have pages for like "first sonogram" ,"first kick", " letter to my baby" (have you seen The Waitress? She gets one of those books)

I LOVE diaper cakes...They are sooo cute. I make them ALL the time for anyone I know that's having a baby :)

Thanks ladies! That book sounds great Blusher - thats along the lines I was thinking. (I actually thought of making her one of those - like a 8x8 scrapbook - but I want to give it to the Mommy before the child graduates school!) :D

Nekochanpurr - the diaper cake is made from diapers - have you seen the bridal cakes made out of towels? you roll the towels making differing 'layers' of towels, bath sheets on the bottom, then normal towels on top of them, then hand towels or face cloths on top of them - so its like a multi-tiered cake. The diaper cake is the same idea, but you can add rattles and teething rings and things like that for decoration. And this might be something I do for her shower, but for right now I think I am going to check out that book! :)

well being pregnant... i would say something that makes the mom to be feel pretty like a gift certificate for a faical or a pedicure when its hard to reach her feet. prenatal yoga classes, or a massage.

Ohhhhhhhh I can think of a thing or two ...... :) but these personalized "things" make a better gift after you know the name, and birth info.

For mom? How about taking her out for lunch and then going for a manicure/pedicure?

For baby? It's small but I treasure it ..... one of my friends bought me a mint coin (which includes the year of her birth) when she found out I was pregnant. I will give it to my daughter when she's "older" LOL

Yeah I agree that giving the new mommy a gift card to go get treated special at a spa would be great :)

Some great ideas here - I like the mani/pedi too.. might save that one for a little later on - she's due in November :) but take 'Grandma' (tee hee.... have to get used to calling my sister that - but she loves it) and niece and maybe myself and make a day of it!

SerendipityCrafts - the coin is a great idea too. I've heard of that before, but never knew where to get it - the bank? oh, come to think of it, I've seen some at the post office too I think?? Do you remember where your friend got yours? I have done a sort of spin off on that.. I buy a sterling silver or pewter piggy bank, then put loonies and twonies and whatever change in there to make up what the baby weighed when born. (ie if the baby weighed 7 lbs. 14 oz - I would put $7.14 - if it was 6 oz I would usually go $7.60) then on the card I would say something like Congratulations on your precious baby - worth her weight in gold. But again, thats one for later on. :)

I also saw some cute t-shirts - one that caught my eye was Yes, I know my Mom IS cute - but wait til you see me! lol I thought that was so sweet. Another one was - I am growing a baby - whats YOUR super power? LOL This is going to be fun! :D

I have seen the coins or coin sets at the post office and also online at the Royal Canadian Mint. They both have baby gift sets. I like the silver dollar with Lullaby CD from the mint :)

Great ideas!! Now I want someone else close to me to get pregnant lol! We just found out that my SIL is pregnant and I gave her a card and a Willow Tree Angel called Cherish. It is a figurine of a pregnant woman. I LOVE them!
