Hey y'all. I was just wondering how many of you dye your hair yourself? I have lots highlights in my hair that are really annoying me so I was going to just do an all over colour in my hair (something close to my natural colour) but I'm really really nervous. Has anybody else dyed their hair and not turned their head all brassy and grose? I just need reassurance lol

Well, I used to do mine myself until I bought a Ferria brand kit in my normal "red" that I liked and when I did my hair I looked like Ronald McDonald! My BFF took one look at me and said "Kel- do we need to go back to the store?" EEEEKKKKK!!
That fixed me from ever trying to dye my own hair again! Now I have a girl who is awesome and she now highlights my hair with both red and blonde streaks, but I'm alot more of a blonde than a redhead these days!

I almost always dye my hair myself (I've only had it professionally done three times - twice because it involved bleach, and that's something you don't want to do yourself). If your hair is long (past your shoulders or so), you'll want to get more than one box to make sure that you get enough coverage. I almost always miss a spot or two the first time around and have to do touch-ups. It's easier if you have someone to help you do the back, but not completely necessary. I also almost exclusively use the Feria brand of color. I've tried some other brands, but I just never like them as much.

I have been dying my hair at home for years and have had good and not so good experiences with it ;)
If you get a good brand (not the cheapest thing) and do a strand test and follow the directions you should be ok :grinhappy:
The brassy thing happens when you try to bleach dark hair a lighter color; this I would recommend having a professional do.
Otherwise I would say home hair color is fine :frogg:

I did it on and off for years and never had any problems. Well, until the time I tried to do at home highlights, yeesh. But as for allover color, piece of cake. Just make sure you cover evenly.

Nice and Easy #98 user for over 8 years here!!!
I have done my hair by myself for such a long time .... I have never really had any problems.... The only problem I had was when I decided I wanted to see my natural hair color and I went to a professional and she told me that she could not turn it back b/c I had dyed it blonde for so long.... At least she did not turn it green like my college roomie did one semester!

I have been 'lightening' my blonde hair since around high school, for some reason my natural bleach blonde started darkening in high school, and is just getting darker. I use L'oreal preference.... I did have a problem one time because I didn't wait long enough for the dye to kinda wear off and ended up using another kit a couple months later and my hair turned a grayish, white, blue... I KID YOU NOT!!! Thank god for Sallys Beauty Supply them ladies were life savers.... if you are a natural blonde I do recommend getting a lightening kit for blonde hair only... or you could do it without all those chemicals and use perioxide....
Yes perioxide.... if you like a natural look to your hair, spray the 50/50 solution on your wet hair after a shower and comb it through. You will not have the peroxide-burnt blonde hair like the hair dye packages but more natural highlights if your hair is a light brown, faddish, or dirty blonde. It also lightens gradually, so it's not a drastic change. Just put it in a spray bottle and apply 1-2 times a day until desired blonde....
If you have any questions I definately recommend finding a Sally's Beauty Supply store in your area and going there and talking with the people that work there, 99.9% of them are in the cosmetology business... and they are really helpful!!

I have been dying my own hair for years, and I have never had a problem, I usually go back to the salon every three dyes to get some highlights in to give it more depth. Good luck!

I Started Dying My Hair At The Age Of 14 Or So, Up Until A Year Ago, But I Dont Think Most People Would Want The Colors I Went With, I Have Had Every Shade Of Red Some Purples And Green.
But On The Plus Side, That Was Always The Color I Was Going For... Laughs. Never Had A Problem.

I've dyed my hair about 5 or 6 times ranging from auburn to light brown without any problems. In fact, I'm going to buy some today. It's been almost a year since I last dyed it.
