View Full Version : Carnations or Daisies??
I am pricing out bulk Gerbera (sp?) daisies and carnations.. and I'm finding that I can get 150 carnations for the same price as 80 daisies. I really want to use a simple white flower for my centerpieces. I will be using these for my centerpieces, and I'm wondering if carnations are too much glam...

I only have a pic of them with the daisies in them.. Being a barn reception, I think the daisies are more fitting, but they're double the price for the amount that I want...

Justina- price out White Daisy Pom Poms too. The Poms look alot more like the silk daisies you have in your picture. Poms generally run about $5.00 a bunch of 10 stems (retail) and have probably 5 to 8 flowers on them per stem. You can easily cut the poms off the long stem to get them arranged the way you want to. Alot of the grocery stores here sell daisy poms for 3 bunches for $12 - not sure if they do in CA or not but would be worth checking.

I love the daisies, but if the others are cheaper they are nice too; I don't think carnations are "glam" at all :frogg:

Poms are a staple in the floral industry. Most mums you see in arrangements are just poms that have been cut off the stem. They are probably the most inexpensive flower you can buy and they come in lots of "styles" and colors. You can get daisy poms, cushion poms, button poms, spider poms, spoon tip poms, etc. They are easy to work with and they last forever!
Another suggestion for you would be to price out mini carnations- again they are multiple flowers per stem and might work out to be less expensive in the long run for you.
Thank you! So they're called just "pom pom's"?? I've never heard of em! I'll look into them right now :) I prefer the daisies as well, I just don't want to spend the extra money, but if I can find them like you said then I may be in luck!
OH!!! Sams Club has them!!!!!

That would be them! If you order them online, when you get them follow the steps below to hydrate them and get them ready for your arrangements:
1) Make a bucket of warm (not hot-not cold) water mixed with the floral preservative that they give you. (warm water has less air in it so you will have less chance of getting air bubbles in the stem of the flowers causing them to die sooner or have "bent neck syndrome")
2) Untie the stems of the bunches and recut the stems at an angle so that the stems do not sit flat against the bottom of the bucket and will be able to drink well.
3) Leave the flowers in the water for about 3 hours to allow them to get a good drink before using them.
This is true for any flowers you get bulk. It is always a good rule to recut and rehydrate before using them.
Wow thank you Kelly!
I have one problem though - my centerpieces are not waterproof.. so I'm going to have to figure out how to keep the flowers in water. Not a huge deal though... I love this!
Are Pom Pons multi blossoms per stem? I will have 35 centerpieces, and I'm thinking I'm going to need at least 8 per centerpiece.. so I'm thinking about getting 2 orders of them at 90 for $50...? I can make them work with some greenery I think.

Yes- they have about 5 to 8 flowers per stem- I think you would be fine with just one order of 90 stems to do your 35 centerpieces.
Hmmm..let me think on the waterproof issue- My first thought is to tell you to use wet floral foam (oasis) - soak it, cut it to fit the vases, then arrange your poms in it but not add any extra water. If you do this the day before and store them in the fridge they would be fine. They won't last more than 3 days without the water, but if you don't care if you use them again it won't matter.
Another thought is to put a mini test tube in there with water in them, arrange your daisies in the test tube and put spanish moss around the edges to cover the mechanics of the test tube.

I love this idea.. I can use a test tube for the stems and that will help keep them standing straight up as well!!! You're a genius :D :flower:

definately daisies! And the cool thing is if you wanted to choose a specific color you could they come in a large variety. Those centerpieces look really nice!
Thank you!!!! Now that I may have a florist, I'll see what it costs to order the centerpiece bulk daisies through them. We'll see how that goes.

The daisies look great! I'd say if you can get them for a price that you want to go for them. :bbmrgreen:

I personally prefer carnations over daisies... I think carnations add more fullness to the bunch and doesn;t look scanty... I would go with carnations, plus I think their scent is lighter than the daisies... IMO
So now that I'm using Sunflowers for my bouquets, I'm thinking about using the actual gerbera daisies for my centerpieces, rather than the pompons. I figure 3 or 5 to a centerpiece would look real cool, like in a triangle. Now I have to go get some silks to play with.
Whaddya'll think?
