How far in advance could you make them? Where do I have to keep them? Fridge?

I am going to be in NY a week before my wedding so I am hoping thats enough time to do everything.

I want to make my own bouquet in fresh flowers.

Depending on the flowers (some wilt faster than others) I would think you could do it a day or two before; then keep it misted and in the fridge.

 Nah, I don't have all the answers; I certainly don't know everything, but I have been in and around the industry for a while and I like to help.

Others here have great ideas and recommendations too! Besides, your questions may help others too :frogg:

Alot depends on what flowers you choose to make your bouquet out of. At the shop I worked at, I would generally put together the bouquets the day before the wedding. If they were made in a foam holder, mist them lightly with a spray mister and put them into a plastic bag, if they were hand tied bouquets, put them in a vase filled with water, mist the top, and cover with a plastic bag, then put them into the fresh flower cooler. A refrigerator would work fine too, but be sure that you don't store them with fresh fruit as the fruit will give off ethylene gas that will cause the flowers to die faster. Also be careful that you don't put the bouquets too close to the fridge wall as they can freeze too.

I didn't know about the fruit thing; the last wedding I helped with, I made the flowers the day before and put them in the same fridge with food too. Lucky they were just in there over night and looked fine the next day for the wedding.

Yes. If you make them a day ahead and store them in the fridge they will be just fine too. Are you going to make hand tied bouquets? Sunflowers have such a large stem they are hard to put into bouquet holders so for a DIY project I would recommend hand ties.

My suggestion to make a hand tied bouquet of sunflowers would be to use the sunflowers, maybe a little bit of greenery, and if you want daisies in it, use the white daisy pom pons that I referred to in FFC's post about daisies - The stems would be similar enough to the sunflower stems that they would work well together. You will have daisies at different intervals throughout the bouquet, but it would look nice as a filler flower. To assemble the bouquet, use waxed floral string or even raffia to tie the bouquet as you put it together- for example, put 3 stems together and wrap them with the twine, then add 3 more stems around that bouquet and wrap it again. Continue until you get the bouquet the size you want it and then tie it off.

I would not add my ribbons to the bouquet until the day of the wedding so that they don't wilt in the refrigerator.

As far as the plastic bag goes, a simple garbage bag or dry cleaning bag is just fine. Something that is big enough that it doesn't crush the flowers, but keeps the moisture in. Don't overspray the bouquet either- just mist it lightly and keep it in the vase of water until you are ready to add the bow and walk down the aisle.

I love the idea of DIYing fresh flowers for the bouquets... I'm really considering it, but I'm not sure I can pull it off and have them look good. I'm interested in seeing what you come up with!!

Also, when you start, just do a search for any posts by Kfancii with the word "flower" in it.. she's got a LOT of good input in other threads too :D :D That's what I'm going to do LOL.
