Dont know why i did the title that way but had a burst of energy...any how How long before your wedding date did you look for rings and cake? How many Kt's is your ring and what is it made of?
We are about a year left and got half cater bill done. We into thinking we should look at rings and cake.
I heard getting a sheet cake for guests is cheaper is that true? Did u do it? What should you spend on a cake? I am inviting 100 people
We picked out our cake at about the 9 month mark. I don't know how much it ended up costing because it was part of our package at the venue. I imagine it was pretty expensive because it was fondant covered and had some detailed decoration. For 200 people, we had a 4 tier cake.
Yes, a sheetcake is less expensive. Much less expensive! Especially since you can get a tasty sheetcake from a good quality grocery store. You could even get a small tiered cake and plain sheetcakes to cut in private. The cake was actually really important to me so I wanted a tall tiered cake. When we were looking at different bakeries, we found the style of cakes we were interested in were generally anywhere from $4 - $7 pp.
We shopped for our wedding bands about 6 months before the wedding. I don't even know how many carats my ring is. It wasn't important to me. It is white gold though. I just saw what I liked and wanted it!

I of course got quotes on my cake from all the well known cake people... but then I started asking around and I found the lady who is doing my catereing and she is also making my cake! A lot of caterers can also make cakes so they will give you a better deal if you do your catering with them. We are doing a 4 layer cake (a Really tall cake was important to me) and it is only like $200! I would suggest to ask around ... there is always someone who does it on the side for less than bakeries! Also we stayed away from the frills to cut down on cost ... Like using buttercream instead of fondant and avoiding really time consuming patterns in icing. To glam our cake up we are adding ribbon in our colors around the base of each layer... kinda like this:
http://budgetdreams.files.wordpress.com/2006/06/wedding-cake.jpg
And I made my own cake topper for like $15 vs. the ones that are like $125!!

My ring is my pride and joy --- probably b/c I worked so hard to get it! But I ABSOLUTLY LOOOOVE it! It is a 2 carat center stone with small diamonds on the side. I love wearing it and I feel naked without it. Here is a pic:

It is kinda blurry here ... but I love the way it sparkles!!!
Brandon just wanted a silver band with a brushed finish. I have not purchased it yet... but I am going to go get it probably this week!
Here is a pic kinda like the one I am getting him but it is a little rounded... comfort fit is what it is called:

well i was searching for some rings for matt (FH) and i know his ring size and will take him again soon to get it resized just cause the seasons change your finger size (summer=swelled fingers) I just wanted to see what type to get him as far as metals. I am not a fancy girl being that i pretty much live with bunch guys half my life at the firehall but im not a tomboy but not super girly...so was not sure what carat to look for and what metal to get for his ring. What are some good ones that are out there as far as carats? I want a wedding set. He is simple just dont know what metals
O-
The caters do not bake at all wedding cake but I really want a cake that is atleast 2-3 cake. But for the rest of the guests...say i bought a sheet cake for them do they have the sheet cake in the kitchen and cut and serve it so they would not know its sheet cake?

I'm planning my whole wedding in less than 5 months, so I bought my cake with 4 months to go.
Most caterers will do what you want, they have done everything before. If you want them to bring out the sliced pieces, it's going to depend on the venue, if they have something set up in the back for that.

DH and I were lucky - one of my friends is a pastry chef and our cake was our wedding gift from her. But, before she offered, we were considering a tiered cake from the WalMart bakery. The price was great, the cake tasted good and they were pretty and no one would have know unless we told them.
We bought our rings pretty early on. Joe wanted titanium - he's allergic to other metals. He got a titanium band with three rubies in it (www.titaniumera.com (http://www.titaniumera.com)) I had originally bought a diamond band but returned it and bought a yellow gold band with rubies to kind of match his.

DH's band is also titanium and looks a lot like Laurens FH ring. It's a little bit of a stronger metal, which he wanted b/c he works in a prison and if he were to ever have to use physical force he didn't want to take the chance of bending his ring (not that the chances of either of those things happening, but in h.s. he bent his class ring in shop class so I think he's just extra cautious). Mine is white gold b/c it's way cheaper then platinum plus it's shinier. I have no idea how many carats. And I have no idea how far in advance we got them. We didn't really follow any timelines, just kind of did when we got time or whatever.
As far as cakes go, we also had a 4 tiered cake and a grooms cake, but we didn't need that much cake so our bottom layer of the cake was fake. Nobody knew the difference, it saved me money, and I got what I wanted. We ended up getting it for really cheap b/c we found somebody who does it on the side, but if we had gone through a bakery we were going to do a few real layers then a bunch of sheet cakes. I would make sure there is a staging area at your venue so the guests won't see the sheet cakes. Hope that helps!
Have fun looking for your rings, it pretty exciting!

that gave me alot of information that i will definately use. I am just curious on the carot size...does it matter? Has anyone gotten a ring from Walmart or Kohls?

A friend of mine, her fiance got her engagement ring from wal-mart and to be honest it was very pretty... granted it wasn't like Southern's but it was a pear shape center stone with tiny ones around it... it was like a 1/2 ct but suited her hand very well.....

A small pc of advice...I have been searching for a cake person too. The brochure that they sent me had a disclaimer on it. It said that if "cake baker" makes your cake don't get sheet cakes from the store and pass them off as your actual cake. If cake baker finds out you do that they will refuse to make your cake. I couldn't find the actual brochure to tell you exactly what it said. I have found a couple places near state college pa that only charge apprx $2.25-$3.00 a serving. If you want some of their names let me know.

I would say that depends on the actual baker. There is one lady here who has a "rent a cake" option with a completely fake but real looking cake (like those that bakers take to bridal shows). Her website states:
"You can choose from many pre-designed cakes or you can design your own. You pay for the service and a deposit for the cake. The whole package will be delivered to you days before your wedding. You then place your cake on your table and enjoy your day. The first cut will be done from the back of the cake where a small cake will be for you to cut into (for sanitary reasons we do not offer the compartment of cake in the dummy) the next picture is you giving your groom a slice of yummy sheet cake purchased here for $2.00 a slice, or your local bakery or Wholesale club.
After the couple's "feeding each other" act, the display cake is taken
back into the kitchen and the sheet cakes are served. This can save you almost half of your wedding costs with cakes around 1200.00++ for weddings for 200."

Me neither!!! That is cool!
Concerning shopping for rings ... My suggestion is to go and try them on to get a feel for what you want. When we started looking ... I had my heart set on a princess cut (Square shaped diamond) but when I put it on, I did not like it as much on my hand. I was in Walmart the other day ... and they have some gorgeous rings!!! If you find the one you love ... it doesnt' matter where it comes from b/c that ring was meant for you!

I was also told, and it makes sense, that people will be able to see the difference between your wedding cake displayed and the sheet cake. Sheet cakes usually aren't as tall as the layers in a wedding cake. That would be if you were to serve both.

I am just curious on the carot size...does it matter?I don't think the ring should matter at all; sure, it should be a symbol of your love and comitment, but the value of it shouldn't have anything to do with that ... but that is just me
DH and I didn't do rings :sweatdrop: I do wear my grandmother's wedding band now, but DH doesn't wear one at all.

For my first wedding, I had a really small brides cake that was white - and we cut it and served it, but I had two large sheet cakes, one that were iced in white buttercream with lavendar rose buds on each piece and the other was iced in chocolate for the grooms cake. Both of these sheet cakes were chocolate which was the cake of choice for my family. The sheet cakes were displayed one each side of the brides cake and I never heard any negative comments that people were being served sheet cake instead of wedding cake. They had their choice and in the end the chocolate cakes were all gone and we took white cake home.
I have a 1/2 tcw (total carat weight) ring, and I got Matt the ring he wanted - tungsten. My cake is going to be free cuz my bridesmaid's FIL is a baker and she is going to have him do it for a gift. I actually figured my cake would be one of the last things I booked though.
I agree, the size of the rock doesn't matter to me, but to Matt it did - it's an ego thing for the guys I think.

I am worried about something, though, now that i think about it. We are not getting our wedding bands the same place we got my engagement ring.. So that means i probably won't want white gold. =/ Because it won't be taken care of like i can get it done at the jewelry store.. D= i know guys can get them in like tusgsten and stuff... But what about girl rings? how would i match white gold? Sorry, i'm crazy. :D

well matt was telling me about a fake cake. White he said the entire thing is fake except one slot where you put the bride and grooms slice. But i dont see how your actually cutting the cake? See if i was to do a fake cake..I want atleast one layer of a real cake to serve to head table, parents of groom and bride and to grandparents. The guests i would rather serve sheet cake to but yet really want a 3 layer cake? Anyone had a fake cake?

I had a fake layer. I wanted 4, but only really needed 3, so the bottom layer was fake and we just cut the 3rd layer. I didn't see it being cut so I don't know all the logistics of how they cut it and all, but as long as the baker tells the people who are going to cut it know, then it should be fine I would think. I couldn't tell the difference looking at it. And as far as the sheet cake being a different size or whatever, I don't know if anybody in my family would have paid that much attention. If they even would have noticed I'm not sure they would have even said anything. I don't see anything wrong with it, but that's JMO.
Wouldn't you think a fake cake would cost just about as much as a real cake anyway??
lize566
03-13-2008, 03:10 PM
well, I mean they don't have to acutally make the cake, so that cuts back on cost and all that, but the hardset part would be decorating I think, so I wouldn't think it would be that much cheaper. I'm not sure how much cheaper mine was with the fake layer. The only suggestion I have about that is to call around and talk to some bakers.

I have been really wanting to go to Moios near my house and apparently you have to have an appointment with them to even speak to the main man i guess you say. But i called and was trying to ask her and she was like "I am not the guy to talk to you have to make an appointment!" Which way she spoke at first i could not hear her soft low delicate voice then she was screaming at me over the phone. I dont know if i should even go there now cause her attitude.... What is the average anyone paid per slice

what is costco? I thought that was a animal place
No, that's Petco silly! I love that place by the way...could spend hours looking at the animals!
Costco is much like Sam's (less expensive warehouse setup). They have much better business ethics and better quality, IMHO.
