NIU (Northern Illinois University) which is in Dekalb, IL has had a shooting this afternoon. Apparently it was around 3:15 in a lecture hall with about 150-200 students in it. It is all over the news here. The shooter is dead, and they first said 2 people were taken to the hospital, but now they are saying 15, they aren't sure since it just happened. The kid on TV just said it was a Geography class. (This info was all from a student they had on the phone that was in the lecture hall)

There are about 25,000 students that attend the school. I actually *think* I'm not sure though, that someone that used to or still does come to this board either goes to or went to NIU. I'm thinking maybe Twigler? In any case the school needs our thoughts and prayers!

Here is the link to one of our local stations

ETA- Nevermind I just found out that Chelsea (Twigler) went to Western IL University.

I'll definitely keep them in my thoughts! My school implemented an emergency text/voice/email messaging system prior to the VT shootings, and they were just running tests on it yesterday.

Here's another article on it. http://www.chicagotribune.com/chi-niu-gunman_webfeb15,0,373583.story They're trying to figure out details but they're keeping most of the info under wraps for now. I have friends there and am so worried for them. I can't imagine how scary this must be for all of the students and their families.

I was on a train coming back from Chicago when my mom called to tell me this. This is just so sad. I have only seen bits of it on the news.

The latest news is that the gunman (who was not an NIU student) killed himself and injured 17. Four people have died from gunshot wounds now.

Sadly the news said this morning that 6 people have died now, not including the gunman. Stuff like that is so scary because you forget how easily it can happen anywhere. Kind of like how a few weeks ago someone went into a local Lane Bryant and shot and killed 5 women and shot and hurt another one, and they still haven't found him :( Scary! Matt and I are going to that town (its about 30 mins from here) today and I dk its just kinda uneasy to go to the strip mall type stores there right now. You just don't expect to not come out of your class or out of the store you walked into.

The gunman was a graduate student at the U of I. He didn't have any sort of record or anything. Just so strange! They did say though that he had been on meds and just recently stopped taking them, I dk if that has anything to do with it or what.
