I'm just wondering if this sounds ok...
 wedding at 5pm.
 done at 6pm.
 pictures at 6:30pm
 reception starts at 8pm (in between 6:30 and 8:00, if people want to go home and eat they can)
 we all come in at 8:30

in case you are wondering... I'm not having a dinner, instead, i'm going to have crackers, salads, deli meats, desserts, cheese etc served right at 8:pm on a buffet table and people can eat if they want. As for our wedding party, we are all going to a late lunch before the wedding ( guys seperate from girls) to tide us over until the reception.
 just after we get to the reception, we will then do our speeches and then let the party begin.

i just thought that this would be a non-traditional way of doing things and i was wondering what people thought about this approach. or had any other ideas of having a wedding without a sit down dinner. let me know...

I would try to feed them something. Many guest do not eat before they come to a wedding, and an average wedding last about 5 hours.

The best way to save money on catering in by having a buffet, or a day wedding (lighter meals)

One wedding I been to just served chicken wings, meatballs, tea and punch.

I definetely think that you can have some type of food at a reasonable price. My wedding (9 1/2 years ago) - had a buffet style dinner (all food was made by family & friends)....I have several uncles that cook for parties & such. I think it turned out really nice - everyone went away satisfied (there was absolutely nothing left)!!

I would go with a buffet dinner. Choose a hall where you can bring what ever you want in. Then go to Sams Club or Costco and buy what you need. If you look online you can find servers you can hire by the hour, also a bar trender...

As a guest you expect to be fed, that is the way most weddings go. If you cut back on other things it will all work out.

Best of Luck

Buffet is the best option. What we are doing. It is not a matter of money for us but easier. FH mom plans to make it all and that took a huge load off and works.

Its our day not a day for everyone to discuss how well our meal was ya know? How I view it.

Look into buffet options that you can have family chip in and help you make and set up?

You should either have your wedding earlier in the day, like an 11am start, or serve food. You can't expect your guests to sit there all evening and not even serve them a meal. I know I would be pretty upset with that situation.

If you are in the Chicago area try - Corky's Catering or Lee and Eddie's - they offer buffets starting at $3.95 per person

GOOD LUCK!
