Finding the perfect dress

It is never too early to start shopping for your dress. Start by looking through some bridal magazines and get an idea of the seasons trends and new styles. Find the ones you like the best and that fit the theme you want for your wedding. Then go out to the shops and try on several different styles.

As with any other garment you shop for, it will always look different on you than it does on the rack. Not every gown will look great on every bride and then there might be a couple that may not do much for you on the rack, but may be the one that is perfect on you ... so try on lots, it will be fun.

Another thing to think about … although it is very popular to photograph the bride from behind with the train spread out and capturing the details of the dress, you will want pictures of YOU in the dress, not the other way around. So be sure your gown looks great on you from all angles and make sure you feel comfortable in it. Remember you will be in it for several hours! You'll be sitting, standing, dancing, etc ...

Also, don't forget to have the seamstress put in a bustle to lift up the train after the formal pictures are done. Without a bustle, you will have the groom and everyone else stepping all over the train and it will get quite dirty! And Ladies, in case you didn’t know, that little loop that holds the train on the hanger at the bridal shop is not a bustle! ;-) I don’t know how many brides I have seen throw that loop over their wrist to hold up the train. If you cannot afford a bustle, consider finding a dress without a train or with just a sweep. (A sweep in a very small “sweep” of a train, that does not require a bustle)

Just keep in mind that finding a dress can take time; you are not likely to find the perfect dress right off the rack at the first shop you go to. Once you do find the gown of your dreams, you will have to be measured and fitted and then the dress will most often have to be special ordered. Then when it comes in, it is likely to still need some alterations to have it fit you properly. This process can take several weeks to several months. So shop early and give yourself plenty of time.

This is one of the few days in your life where all eyes will be on you. You want to look and feel your best … be a princess, for a day at least! Don't settle for something that's just "okay".

Try these money saving tips:

- Shop last years styles … many shops will have the previous years’ styles heavily discounted

- Shop in the off season … the spring and summer are the busiest times in the wedding industry if you shop in November - January, you should be able to find some better deals

- Look for “off the rack” specials … sometimes you can find discounted gowns that have been left from orders that where never picked up or even display gowns

- Try a consignment shop and/or look in the paper, on eBay and online for people selling once worn gowns … you never know what you might find.
