I believe it is part of the mortgage for a home to have insurance, and I think the same is true for renting a home. But it is not as common when renting an apartment or town-home to have insurance.

So do you have renter's insurance?

Yep. It's pennies compared to what I used to pay for home insurance.

I'm a homeowner now, but when I did rent, I only had renter's insurance when it was required by the landlords.

Oh my yes. We haven't bought yet (will once we get married) but whenever I've rented, I've ALWAYS carried renter's insurance. It's not expensive, and it's well worth the investment. We also have both of our engagement rings listed specifically on the policy, in the event anything were to happen, it gets lost or stolen.

I'm in an apartment at college now and my roommate and I got insurance for the year, it cost us about $100 bucks. When FH and I get married we're going to move into an apartment at first for various reasons, and I'm sure we'll get renters insurance then too. For how inexpensive it is, I feel silly for not having gotten it last year.

Whoops, I didn't mean to say $ and bucks. Anyway, I didn't have it last year and the night of the super bowl a pipe burst in the apartment across from ours and one floor up, and water was ALL over the place (well, water for about 3.2 seconds, then ice) -- luckily they stopped it before it got over to our ceiling. That scared me into getting it for this year!

I Do, After Rita Hit Our Area It Destroyed Alot Of Places, Including The Appartments I Had Just Moved From, So In My New Place I Chose To Get The Insuance, Its Not That Expensive And It Makes Me Feel Better.

Nope we don't have it. Never really thought about it. Also we are only there for 2 more months. I guess its a good idea, but we didn't even think of it.

I'm slacking.. I've been meaning to get it for the past 16 months... Just that adding anything to my insurance right now could result in me losing it.. my payments are enough as it is!

We actually just got renter's insurance today. It's going to be about $20 a month.

the miami valley of ohio (sw ohio) is pretty good about avoiding weather disasters, as is southern illinois. sure, there is a tornado every now and then. but its outside of hurricanes, (usually) flooding and there is a blizzard every few years but nothing that would damage an apartment. its only like 16 bucks a month for renters insurance, but we figure, anything that is going to happen is going to be under liability of the landlord (like fault wiring etc) so we dont really need it. im gonna go find some wood to knock on right about now! lol
