I'm an english major and I've read about 4 million books in the last couple of years, but I don't even know what newer books are out!
Some fantastic books though...
Any of Jane Austen's six novels (Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, Emma, Northanger Abbey, Mansfield Park, Sense and Sensibility)
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See (This one actually is pretty recent, and I wanna say was a NY times bestseller a couple years ago)
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

I've read Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. It was pretty good, but i was not too impressed by the end. It kind of made me mad, actually, LOL.
The others books, i'll have to check out!! =D
Oh, and right now, i'm reading 'What Dreams May Come' by Richard Matheson.. OMG its so good so far! =D
I actually like a lot of kids books, too.. Like Narnia and Harry Potter.. Oh! A Series of Unfortunate Events was a REALLY good series! :D

Haha, yeah, it's been over a year since I read Snow Flower, but I seem to remember being displeased with the ending too. That reminds me though, Memoirs of a Geisha was a great book.
I have been hooked on the author Elizabeth Berg..I love her style of writing. I even got my mom hooked on her. Plus I will read anything dog related! I love John Grogan and Jon Katz.

I'm reading "Everything Must Go" right now and I'm just really starting to get into at like chapter... 15? The main character=crazy. Yeah.. but once i start i *must* finish... I read a LOT though, borrow books from coworkers and stuff, should really start a book club, lol. On of my favorites: "Time Travelers Wife"
I can't get enough of Julie Garwood. I have a Nora Roberts, Julie Garwood, and Mary Higgens Clark collection... but not near enough Julie Garwood!

That was a REALLY good one, too.. I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't read it.. but boy do i dislike who she ended up with!! I was like 'Whoa.. Wait.. WHAT?!' LOL. I was so mad, i wanted her to get with the other guy! LOL

I'm a former English major and massive classic literature nerd. A few of my favorites are David Copperfield (Charles Dickens), The Picture of Dorian Grey (Oscar Wilde), As You Like It (Shakespeare), Phantom of the Opera (Gaston Lerouxe ..which I may have mispelled). There are so many more, I Capture the Castle, and Outsiders are two "newer" classics I adore. Anything by Jane Austin as another poster pointed out, is divine.
Right now I am reading The Innocent Man, which is John Grisham's first work of nonfiction. As the book summary says, "an exploration of small town justice gone terribly awry, is his most extraordinary legal thriller yet."
I'm really enjoying it. Grisham has always been one of the "modern" writers I respect.

I like all kinds of books: 1984, all the Ya Ya books by Rebecca Wells, To Reign in Hell by Steven Brust (really good fantasy book). I'm reading the first Harry Potter book right now. It's very entertaining!

Yeah, 1984 is one of my favorites. I had to read it in high school, but when I read it then, I did not realize how good it really was, so I read it again last year with a more open mind. :D
