I'm just starting out...help please!!!

Hey everyone...I just got engaged January 2nd...& I have no idea where to start. We are having a long enagement but I want everything to be perfect so im starting early. We have our date set for May 1st of 2010...any suggestions??

Welcome to Onewed. You have plenty of time, so don't worry. The girls on here are uber helpful. The best place to start is to decide on a budget. Then decide on a theme or colors that you want to use. The theme or colors is what is going to control most of your ideas for your wedding.

One thing I would recommend that you wait on is your dress. I got all giddy excited and bought mine a week or two after getting engaged...but then realized that it'll be sitting in my mom's house for months and will need to be re-steamed before I wear it to fluff it out. Also, if you get it now, you'll be stressed about gaining or losing weight between now and the wedding - cause if your body changes, it may no longer fit.

I think having so much time can sometimes be tough because you can change your mind 100 times through. However, it is also great because you can check SOOOO many different things out. I would look around and see TONS of different options before deciding for sure on your plan. I would not run out and start buying things until you have searched and are set on what you want!

I had a long engagement as well. I started planning in 2006 for my 2008 wedding. My word of advice:

*Don't pick everything out, and wait till the last 6 months to buy things. If you're not using food for your favors, start making them (after you set your theme/budget).

*Start looking for locations now, be open minded and don't book the first place you look at.

Planning ahead and slowly putting little things together will make the financial impact less painful :)

Oh yeah, get counselling. I know I don't want to go, and you might not want to go either, but think of it this way:

People spend thousands and thousands of dollars on their wedding day, that only lasts a day.

Why not spend a couple hundred dollars on something that will (hopefully) last the rest of your life?
