View Full Version : Thanksgiving Wedding

I have seen lots of threads up about fall weddings and such so thought I'd toss one up about specifically Thanksgiving Weddings.
Jon and I were trying to find a date over Thanksgiving break around work and school schedules when it dawned on us. Those taking the time to be there will all be close family and friends who would like to spend the holiday together anyhow, so why not? *grin*
Right now all my ideas are just rough ones. Our colors are burnt orange, a deep gold, and dark brown. Bride's Maids will be in burnt orange dresses, men in brown tuxes with orange vests. Gold for accents.
As far as decorations I know I want to incorporate maybe some smaller squashes, autumn leaves, Indian corn, pumpkins. I'm really not sure on the flowers I want for accents or bouquets yet. There are some orange/gold roses that are ok. Gerber daisies stand out...maybe some kind of orchid or lily?
For food we are thinking Thanksgiving Dinner buffet style. His mom, grandma, and a few other relatives live in town I'm sure I can convince them to cook turkey and other things. We'll be doing a cupcake tower instead of a cake and I'll have to post a picture of the type I have picked out! The one decision I have nailed down so far haha.
Our motto has been "Faith, Hope, Love...Thanksgiving." The day is special to us, family is a very big thing and we are thankful for so much!
Alright...all that rambling aside I guess I just wanted to open the floor to any suggestions folks might have, or useful tips :) As we've recently decided to overhaul our overlying 18th century theme.
Is there anything that would stand out for the holiday that I seem to be missing?

But probably too shnazzy and expensive. I've had a hard time finding something more simple. Flowers are not my area of expertise!

Would you find a cornucopia too cliche? I wonder if you could DIY something like this. Not sure I like the wires, but it's a thought?

I think if you did the cornucopia in a modern way (like what's pictured), it would be a great addition!
And those flowers are beautiful. I LOVE fall colors and originally wanted to do a late October wedding (school got in the way! LOL). I'm a little bit jealous. Hee!
You could do some decorating with bare tree branches w/ white lights on them...I think that's always so pretty. Kinda like these:

Centerpiece idea (this could be really cheap if you made it yourself!):

i loooooove the colors.. love love love it. Some people wont make it because of it, and keep in mind your anniversary will always be on thanksgiving (your very big on family and if you ever want to go away on your anniversary you wont be able to)
Also, thanksgiving is a thursday and that will cut costs :) But have you checked to see if you would be able to obtain a photographer, a florist etc have heard of that being a problem when its a holiday.
personally i looove the idea, just trying to think of anything that could possibly be a problem in case you havent though of those things :)

We're actually HOPING some people don't' come because of it *chuckle*. Aiming for a small event and not too worried there.
I wont' be looking for a florist, as I'll be doing most things myself. *crosses fingers* The photographer is one thing we have been a bit worried over but will cross that bridge when we come to it. Luckily I think Thanksgiving is not that popular of a holiday for events outside of homes, so it shouldn't be too bad. (Meaning a venue to book, etc should still be easy.)
As for the anniversary *grin* Our anniversary will be on November 27th. Which will not always be a Thanksgiving. Since the holiday just falls on the fourth Thursday of the month. We could still celebrate it on Thanksgiving if we wanted, I suppose. But I had to remind Jon about the fact it's not the same day every year *giggle*.
Tango - I love those branches! And I think Samantha used some pumpkins hollowed out to hold flowers as centerpieces, I liked that idea a lot! I'm not too big on the plain brown centerpieces etc. I love color!
Edit: I finally found the cupcakes I'd set my heart on before! http://farm1.static.flickr.com/120/267304400_54dd8354b9.jpg?v=0

I love your theme...and all the flowers posted are beautiful. Decorating for this wedding will be so exciting...I think the cornucopia would be excellent for table centerpieces.
Your menu sounds great...the traditional Thanksgiving feast...you might want to incorporate that into your invitations...(ie...reception and Thanksgiving feast to follow ceremony)
You have a bunch of options here with this one!
Best Wishes!
