So I am having a difficult time deciding which veil to go with... There are soooo many styles of veils and to me alot look the same and other don't... so confused. I mean how do you decide whether to go short veil, birdcage, fingertip length, cathedral!!!!! AWWHHHHHH!!!! I am going nuts....

This is the dress I am going with...

The train is chapel length and I have two choices of veils....

and....

So how do you choose... is it based on the style of dress, length of train, material, facial structure,.... I don't know... I like both so much but prefer the first one, because I want to be total princess.... but then prefer the second because of the poof... ugh!

What did or how did you ladies decide on what veil?

My dress has elaborate detailing on the back. I will chose a short veil as to not take away from my dress. i think that is important. You dont want to take away from your dress :)

True your dress is very glamourous... the one I have is pretty much plain... so I don't know which veil to choose.....???

I think the bottom of your dress is too detailed for a long veil. I'd choose an elbow length. Birdcage would probably fit the style of the dress best -- but I don't know how many people can realistically pull that off, so I barely consider it.

I was marrying outside, and I wanted a REALLY long veil because I love those pictures. But how silly to have a super long veil with just the bride and groom there? lol so I got fingertip, and I'm SO glad I did. I wouldn't have liked any shorter. In fact, I felt like mine was even too short. (My dress was a simple white bridesmaid dress, so there was no detailing on it.) I wouldn't change a thing.

I would go with the second one so you don't take away from the waist down of the back of your dress.

I agree with St John....your dress is too puffy and detailed to go with a long veil! I say go shorter!!!!

Definitely you should try them on...You might find one that just "fits" your face and the dress, and then you don't have to worry about trying to picture the best one in your head...

I do like the second shorter veil better for the style of dress you have - I think a shorter veil would bring attention towards your face more.

Veil length, at least according to the bridal etiquette guides I've read, suggests that the more formal the ceremony the longer the length. Additionally, they seem to suggest that if you're wearing white, that you ought to wear something in front of your face, I believe they're called blushers.

Obviously since you're wearing a pink dress all bets are off :) Since you're clearly going the non-traditional route, I would suggest that you wear whatever looks best with you and your hairstyle. A lot of times a veil that just hangs down from your tiara looks nice, or, if you aren't wearing anything in your hair, a two-tirered veil might look nice too.

Personally I always prefer longer veils over shorter ones. I think they just compliment the sweep of the dresses better than short ones. Short veils really do tend to say 'informal' -- I've always seen them in Las Vegas or at the beach, or something. But my opinion doesn't really matter because in my case, I'm not going to wear a veil at all! Just a hat with some ribbons, or perhaps a flower garland.

Since I'm not wearing a veil, I'm hardly qualified to talk about yours . . .

I chose a veil based on what looked good on me. I went into a David's, tried on a few overpriced veils of various shapes, lengths, and fullnesses with my dress, and then left to think about what looked good. Then, I ordered one in the shape that complimented my face best online for cheap. :)

I also agree that the shorter veil will look better with your dress. The fluff on your dress is raw-edged, so the raw-edged two-tier veil will match well. The ribbon edge on the cathedral-length veil just doesn't match, but if you want a cathedral-length one, I'm sure you could find a raw-edged one that will work!

But please, try something like it on before you buy it! I was soooo sure I wanted a super-long veil until I got tangled up in the one at David's and tripped all over it like a moron!

I agree with other posters, I think the shorter one will be prettier with your dress. I think a long veil would just be too much with the skirt. Also, I'm really a fan of the poof of the second one!

So I have been talking more and more with my mother and MOH and they even suggested a birdcage veil or something shorter than fingertip but longer than birdcage. My concern is that I have a tiara I want to wear, and that with my very short hair would a bridcage veil work using a tiara???

So here are some other ones I was looking at because I have totally scratch the cathedral veil out and pretty much the fingertip length one....

As for me trying on veils... I have tried on a couple but haven't really seen a difference in which one I prefer on me... I want to have a veil but make the dress a focal point so I kind of want to base my veil off the style and intricacy of the gown or lack there of...

Wasn't someone else doing a thread on birdcage veils....?

I am leaning more towards making a bridcage veil because I think it would look better with my short hair, but my thing is... I have been trying to find how to make one and nothing has really been helpful... I really want the dress to be the main focus and have been thinking that I can wear the birdcage veil for the ceremony and have a feather jewel thing on the side and then... wear my tiara for the reception....

this is my tiara...

I think the first one on your second post would look absolutely beautiful with your dress!!!

I don't think birdcage veils look good with that tiara, or any tiara, for that matter. They seem to look the best with pillbox hats and pins, in my opinion.

Long veils can look very cute with short hair! (I'm a short-hair bride, too!) The two-tier, fingertip-length veil would look awesome with that tiara, I think...

I love my tiara I ended up buying it right after I got engaged... it was the first thing I bought and well now that I am getting closer.. I have found that I think a birdcage veil would look better with an ornament of some sort on it but no tiara.. I am actually thinking of birdcage for ceremony and tiara for reception.... I don't even know if I really want a veil anymore...

OK so going to HobbyLobby, Joanne Fabrics, Wal-Mart and Micheals.... they have no idea what I was talking about when I used the following terms, birdcage veil, russian netting/veiling, or french veiling!?!?! What you work in a craft store that sells fabric and you have no clue... ugh and I had people laughing at me when I was asking about the items.. seriously.

I am having such a difficult time looking for the netting/fabric and feathers in craft stores.... would anyone know of where I would be able to purchase the fabric either online or if you know other fabric stores?!?!?!

ugh that stinks that they laughed at you. sometimes those craft store people dont know more about crafts then you or i :)
I think that you could use a birdcage veil with a feather for the ceremony and it would e gorgeous!!! however, i have to add that if you have short hair and are leaving it down, the tiara might not go so well. its really a mater of seeing it WITH the dress and hair style- Also, the elbow length veil would be pretty with short hair too.

Usually one yard of veiling is required for the average hat. However some veils are very small and require only % of a yard. Sometimes the veiling is too wide for a particular hat. In this event cut off some of the width of the veiling, using the side that has been cut at the top of the hat, turning in the cut part and sewing or tacking in place, on hat. If a small visor veil is used, swirl veiling with a steam iron and let veil dry before sewing in hat. Then cut off all excess veiling inside headsize, after veil has been sewn in hat.
To drape a veil on a hat, pin center of veiling to center of hat. Put hat on Utility head block and drape and fold veiling until desired effect is attained.
Gather ends of veiling, (cutting off any excess) wind ends of veil with a thread and tuck ends of veiling under edge of crown or brim or under any fold, here use your own individuality. Ends of veiling may have narrow velvet ribbon sewn on and veil tied at the back of hat.

I have been thinking of ordering the veils from that website but its not worth 60-80 bucks for something I can make myself when the fabric is like 5 bucks a yard... its just that I'm well CHEAP... sorry... I did play around with some of the netting fabric I got but its not the russian veiling I want.. it turned out crappy but I would like it better if it was the russian stuff.. I found a couple websites for the veiling... looking for patterns now.... ugh

I am keeping my short hair and just didnt like the look of a veil with it... but i guess you are right i should get the dress and go from there...

I would just wear the tiara and no veil. I really think a veil will take away the look of your STUNNER of a dress!

What is the procedure for the kiss with an eye-level birdcage? Does the groom lift it or just leave it? I'm thinking about wearing a birdcage now, but I've always been turned off by the veil lifting tradition. I guess I just stripped veils of any significance. Oh well. :bblol:

BrideInCuffs21

I don't know on the lifting of the veil part, but my birdcage veil is going to made so it slants over just one eye.. hard to explain but i dont want it covering both my eyes... so it depends on what length of the birdcage you go with whether it needs to be lifted or not...

The dress is so beautiful and detailed, I'd follow the suit of the picture and use something very simple - a tiera is too much, but the birdcages are great.

I'm picking up my fabric from JoAnns here in NC, buying my comb online, a few small feathers for some depth, and having our tailor make it. He's only going to charge me 30 bucks. I only need two yards of veiling - and it's very inexpensive. Should come off for about $38 - 40 by the time it's finished.

Good luck ! I had the same dilemma - but that dress doesn't need anything else ! You'd look great in pearls as well !

Genny my problem is finding the russian veiling... i am at my whits end cuz I can't find it at any store around here and no one has heard of it before!!! Also having such a hard time trying to find feathers without having to order them from online.... i don't want to have to spend a ton for this veil and fascinator thats why i would rather make it myself... but having to by sooo many feathers... i guess if i buy them online i can have the florist add the feathers to the bouquets...?

You have a beautiful wedding dress picked out. Honestly, I think the back of the dress is too pretty to hide under a long veil. But if you are wearing your hair up...a veil coming off the back like the first one would look great...just in a shorter version.
Again...super gorgeous dress...don't hide it under a veil.
Best Wishes on your wedding day!
