View Full Version : Bad French Toast

I made French Toast today and it didn't turn out good :bbcry: It was mushy in the middle and almost burnt on the outside.
I guess I soaked too much of the goo in there? But I followed the recipe, it said to soak each side for 20 seconds.
I am such the bad 'housewife' :bawling:
:helpsmilie: Anyone good at this cooking thing have any tips for next time I try this?

I usually don't let the "goo" soak in for much more then 3 seconds per side! If you soak it too long and then cook it, the inside doesn't cook and it comes out very gross. So my advice is to soak it for 3 seconds on each side and cook it on a medium-low heat so it can cook slowly but evenly!
And you are a Bad housewife Brandi!! A bad housewife, wouldn't even try!! French toast can be tricky!! Lol....Dam you french toast!!
Better luck next time!! :)

Yeah, I wondered if 20 seconds was too long to soak ... yes, it was a gross mush :frown:
I read somewhere else to use slightly stale bread because it doesn't soak up as much ... I used fresh, do you use stale bread?
DH said it was ok, the ends were pretty good :bblol: I will try again and not soak as much.
Thanks Shawna
I still think we should start a cooking/recipe thread ... I make some good stuff

To be honest I have never heard of using slightly stale bread...I guess that could always help!

I would love to have a recipe section. Maybe we can get the admins to add it. I love to cook and share recipes :D
Now on the french toast. Canadianwife is right I think you probably soaked it too long too.
So what is the recipe you used?
All I do is beat 2 eggs, add a little cinnamon and nutmeg, a small amount of milk(maybe 2t or so) and then I soak the bread till all the bread is saturated on both sides. I spray my pan with some pam and then cook em. YUMMY!!
That's all I do. Actually Danny is the one who usually makes french toast cause I don't know what he does different but they always taste better when he makes then. Could be in my head though! LOL!!:D

All I do for mine is beat a couple of eggs and add a little bit of milk. I just dip the bread in just long enough that both sides are covers and then I throw them on my electic frying pan. They turned out pretty good the last time I made them. Come to think of it I thin I might make some for supper tonight.

We could ask L3vi or we could just start a thread in the General section.

Yeah, I guess I soaked it too long. Here is where I got the recipe I used ...

I cooked it (or rather I tried ;)) on my electric griddle ... I love that thing

My DH cleaned the dishes before and he takes out the trash, but he doesn't cook. He is a mad re-heater though  Once he made me some soup (in the microwave) when I was sick.
I don't complain, he does lots of other great things for me and for us.

The picture on that site looks terrible! Yikes! Maybe they like soggy French Toast! :)
Jason cooks quite a bit, which is good considering I'm not home very much. But we eat out a lot too just because it's easier than trying to squeeze making and eating dinner into that short time period I have between jobs.

I agree that the pic didn't look very good ;)
We use to eat out alot because we are always busy and I am not a big cook. But we are trying to eat healthier (especially since I have slightly high blood pressure ... and I want/need to loose some weight) so we are trying to eat out less and cook more. The goal is to only eat out once or twice a month. But we have been eating out like once a week here lately ... but still not as bad as we use to be.

My mom uses a little bit stale bread. Like the kinda when you've left the bag open over night. Hers always comes out great. She drops it in the sauce, flips and then puts it in the pan. She also slices the bread in half so its small peices to work with. It cooks better and doesen't rip as easily when you pick up the bread from the mix with a fork.
I haven't attempted it myself yet. I'm still mastering pancakes.

I agree with Gwen. I just dip long enough to get the "goop" on both sides. Then fry it. When it done and still hot, sometimes I sprinkle a little powered sugar on it then eat it with syrup. mmmmmmmmmm

I use to burn pancakes until I got my electric griddle ... they come out great now ;) (Although I use mix from a box )

I cook ALL the time. And I can take 1 dish and make it 10 different ways, but I dont "homemake" anything. I love the neat little packages you buy at the store and almost always turn out right.:bblol:

LOL Almost is the key word at my house. I must confess... I've screwed up Hamburger helper.
Everything comes from a can or package and gets mixed together that's 'homemade'. My spaggitti sauce is that way. I don't chop a single tomatoe myself.

I use the packages too quite a bit. Nice and easy when you don't have much time. In the winter I have alot of free time so I cook alot. I used to be the only cook for our elementary school. I cooked for 40 kids.(I live in a small town. 40 kids was all the kids in grades K to 6! Pretty small huh?:bbeek: ) They usually ate whatever I served them so I guess that is a good sign. :D

Lol Becky....a lunch lady that ate her own cooking. Thats never been heard of. :D
Jenn, dont feel bad. My first marriage we ate a lot of Hamburger helper. It wasnt until after we split up that i actually started making an effort to cook for my kids. It was cheaper to cook a whole meal. I screwed up a few HHs too. Now i can take one and nobody even knows its Hamburger helper.
One of my familys FAVORITE meals is actually a Tuna Helper. I take the Fetticine Alfrado one and instead of tuna I use salad shrimp, serve it with salad and garlic cheese toast. They think they are in heaven. AND NO ONE BELIEVES ME WHEN I TELL THEM WHAT IT ACTUALLY IS!!!!!!!

Yep, I have made quite a bit of HH in my day too ... and screwed some up. I have made the shrimp Alfredo one too Cindy *yummy* But, I am trying to cook more healthy things these days with the whole low sodium diet thing. But we were 'bad' yesterday and ordered Chinese food ;)

See, my problem with cooking is that I can follow a recipe no problem, but I cant cook without one. I don't have the ability to look in the fridge and cupboards, see what I have and then cook something. I wish I had that talent. :bbconfused:

Have any of you tried this?
Make mac n cheese as the box says then stir in cooked hamburg and cream of mushroom soup. Put it in the oven for 30 min or until heated through. We really like it.

Try it with sausage. Thats how we like it. Or if you like tuna, you can make a quick tuna casserole that way too.

I'm the exact opposite...for whatever reason I misread recipes; I forgot flour in banana bread...that wasn't pretty. I put too much cornstarch in a gravy recipe I was following...ever tried to use gravy that had the consistancy of very hard jello? Then there was the hiroshima and nagasaki hot dogs...learned two things that time; 1. Hot dogs go in the microwave for two minutes, not twenty and 2. Tupperware is not microwaveable. :bbmrgreen:
As far as cooking goes, I think I'm the master of throwing stuff together because there aren't many recipes I can follow. Most call for cheese or cream soups or something else that has some form of milk product. I make my pizza with tofu cheese and I have a milk replacement, but that stuff is really expensive, so I'd rather not cook too much with it. Jason LOVES my hibachi shrimp stir fry; mushrooms, fresh broccoli, onions and shrimp (I buy it already cooked so I just throw it in the pan after everything else is cooked). I sautee it up with margarine and soy sauce and serve it over rice. We even found a toasted sesame and ginger dressing that is really good! It's made by Cape Cod; we only get it every now and then because the little bottle is kind of expensive, but it goes great on shrimp and chicken!
For all of you homemakers out of a box; italian chicken is really fast and easy! My mother used to make it all the time for us. I've heard your not supposed to cook meat in the microwave, so we started making it in a pan on the stove, but basically it's chicken with italian dressing on it. Nuked or sauteed, it's DELICIOUS and REALLY easy!
Wow, I yammered...sorry y'all, I really love to cook! :)

I love cooking too!! I make the best chilli from (almost) scratch!! My hubby loves it and I think it tastes just like my mom's only BETTER! lol. I usually WON'T follow a recipe because I don't like being told what to do in my kitchen!! My dad is also an awesome cook, I think thats where I get most of my talent from! When I lived with a friend I got sick of mac and cheese and hot dogs so I had to teach myself to cook, and that meant something other than spagetti...So I would get out the cook book and look through it, see something I liked, skim the recipe and attempt it on my own. Some days there were some really nasty dishes and other days I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Now that we're married we've got all kinds of fancy kitchen machines that I SHOULD use, but don't because I rely on all my old faithful (by memory) recipes. One of these days I'm gonna have to use that bread maker or kitchen aid machine...lol.

I asked for a bunch of kitchen aid applicanes. I'm hoping (praying) that having them will help me cook better. Or inspire me to cook more!
I am tired of the same old same old arround here.

The same old, same old was kinda what got me up and cooking. My kids would look at supper and say "again?" I started doing it for them.
