So i've been really thinking about what we should do for our favours for the wedding. I was thinking i would do a personalized wrapper on a chocolate bar. But now i'm really re-thinking it. Honestly it would be alot of work and with my class schedule and work load i have i don't know that i have the time or energy to do it.
Last night Mark and i were talking about what to do. And i've been toying with the idea of just doing a donation on the behalf of all the guests to a local charity. Possibly the Canadian Cancer Society because my brother and 3 out of 4 grandparents died of cancer. It's somthing very close to our lives. With that we would put a little bowl of kisses or M&M's or Mints on the tables for the guests to enjoy rather then a candy bar or somthing that they may not have any use for.
What do you guys think of that idea? As a guest would you appreciate having a donation made on your behalf to a charity rather then getting a candy bar or little trinket?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I think it is a nice idea. Sean and I are giving money to Habitat for Humanity in each of our guests names. I am just going to Staples and buying a box of DIY reseponse/reception cards and printing a little message on each of them stating what we have done. Then I will just leave one at each place setting. I'm sure some guests (especilaly older more traditional ones) will complain that they didn't get a piece of candy but at the same time I am sure just as many will appreciate the kindness of wanting to share our special day with those less fortunate.

I really think that's a beautiful idea.

Let me ask you though about the personalized chocolate bars, I love that idea. How were you planning on doing it?

I mesured out the size of the original chocolate bar wrapper and created a design that size. It had both our names then our last name with the wedding date. On the back i put a little message to the guests " A special treat to Thank you for making our big day oh so sweet - Mark & Jennifer".
I printed it out on coloured paper, cut it to the right size and wrapped it arround using a glue stick to glue the two sides together.

Hope that helps! They turned out really nice! I was thinking i would put some curling ribbon arround them and attach a tag that would say the guests name. It would work as both the thank you and as a place card i thought.

Jenn,

I think donating to the Canadian Cancer society on behalf of your guests is a wonderful idea!! Every donation helps in the steps to beating that horriable disease!! I thank you for having such a giving heart as my Favorite Aunt passed away two years ago (God has it been that long???) from cancer. Her's was a very short and most painful battle and I do not wish cancer on my worst enemy! Your idea of the donation is wonderful and my cousin did the same thing at his wedding! It brought tears to people's eyes, but it also brought back fond memories of my aunt and it was a way to remember her on her son's wedding day! So I say go for it!! I think its a wonderful idea!!

When I would reenact, we had to rewrap chocolate bars so that they were period. It's not hard to do at all! And you can make them look really nice!

As for the donation...I think that's a lovely idea! If you like it, I would totally go with it!

I'm sorry to hear about your aunt. I agree it is such a horrible disease, and i wouldn't wish it upon anyone either. It hurts too much.
Marks mom did that this past summer when she got married. Her mother passed away from throat cancer a year or so before. Both my grandparents on my dad's side died of lung cancer. My grandmother died less then a year ago. It was the worst thing i have ever seen. I spent alot of time taking care of her since i was her only family living in the same city. It breaks my heart to see my friends smoking. If only they knew what it does to you. My younger brother passed away when i was a child from cancer as well. It's somthing that is really close to me. And means alot. If there was a cure, i might still have those important people in my life.

One last question- what chocolate bars were you thining of getting? I think I may go with this as a favour. I am a chocoholic and think this would be perfect.

I am looking for the orginial hershey bars. I was thinking they had a silver wrapper (so it would match the decorations) I did my mock up with an Aero bar though. You could use anything that still has a paper wrapper arround the foil wrap.

I have found where you can have the labels printed for the "mini" candy bars. You get a lot of the and then just buy a bag of the assorted "minis" and attach them.

I think the donation is a great idea! I have seen that done a few times.

I saw once where a bride 'registered' for charitable donations too.

Cancer and Diabetes research are my fav charities ... I have known a few people die from Cancer and I know several people suffering with it now. I also know quite a few people with Diabetes. It bugs me when the Dr's can't give you any answers about these things.

Sorry, I got a little off topic there.

Just an FYI...if you buy them in multi packs, Hershey's bars don't come in the foil wrapper anymore...at least not around here. I know because I had to unwrap a dozen of them and rewrap them in foil and our homemade labels for a reenactment. If you can afford it, I think dove chocolate comes in foil wrappers and that would be a little more elegent. But if you don't mind rewrapping the bars, you could do some really cool stuff with it...as long as the work doesn't drive you bonkers!

hmmmm did not know that. I haven't seen them in the grocery stores. I was planning on checking Costco to see what they had if i am going to do this option. I plan on bouncing the ideas off my mom later this week. Mark seems to be into the donations with a bowl of treats on the table. But my mom loves the idea of chocolates. So i'm thinking the donation will happen either way. Its just weather or not we have the treats. Depends on the costs to make it.

If you end up doing the donations, maybe you could put the information about the donation on the candy bar wrapper...consolidate! :)

I didn't know they had changed the wrappers over either, until I found myself re-wrapping them at 2:30 in the morning the night before we were heading out to a reenactment.

Thats a neat idea :D
I really don't want to be re-wrapping at 2am any day.
