Last year, I met one of the nicest, most sincere people I've ever come across. His name was Martin, and he was an international student from Nigeria. Never did I see him without his famous smile. We met in one of our writing classes, and the following semester (this past spring), we had another class together.

Martin missed a lot of class, and the professor informed us that Martin had been diagnosed with kidney cancer. Other than his host family, he had one sister in NYC, and the rest of his family was back home in Nigeria.

He went through surgery, and despite him saying he was doing better, he developed a nasty cough. I kept tabs on him through the professor that informed us of his cancer because he worked in her office. She had not heard anything recently.

I just read on Facebook that Martin passed away yesterday. To show you what type of person he was, here is an excerpt from his Facebook page:

All I can say about myself is that I live for what life is worth cos its too short to waste. I believe God has a bigger plan than what we can see with our eyes, and we should just learn to embrace life. i am extremely fond of kids, they make me happy no matter how my day has been. i coach kids' soccer and its a big part of my life. i enjoy playing volleyball, and would still play it even if i had no arms. i love vanilla milkshakes no matter what time of the day it is. so if you wanna please me, just ask me out to a game of volleyball or soccer and treat me to a milkshake after that :) I live by these words -"Fight the Sun!". i think we should do our best with doing whatever we have to do before the day is over. Fight the Sun, and dont let it take away what you would have accomplished when it sets.

Awwwwwwwww He is sure to be missed by many and remembered fondly by that many more.

It's amazing how some people we hardly know can touch us so profoundly isn't it?

This brought tears to my eyes. He sounded like such a wonderful young person to have been around and known. I am sure he will be missed by many. He will now be in heaven, playing ball with children and drinking those vanilla milk shakes he loves so much.

That's the hardest part of being a minister, explaining why God took a loved one so soon. To this day, no matter how often I try to explain it, seems like it's never the right answer.
All I know is His ways are always for the better, even at times they don't seem like it.

Thanks everyone.

I just found out that Martin's host family lost a son to bone cancer last September at age 18. How terribly sad.
