i just went back and read your blog... did you adopt her from the shelter or did you jsut take her off the woman's hands? Did you hear about ellen degeneres and her dog "fiasco"? she adopted a dog then gave it away. and the shelter just happened to check up on the dog and it wasnt at ellen's house. in the contract it usually says that if you want to get rid of the dog you have to take it back to the shelter, not give it away. so if they go to this woman's house to check up on the dog and find its not there, you could have the dog taken from you. Im not trying to scare you but just be forewarned. And if they come get the dog then you might have to go through the whole process and pay an adoption fee... good luck... im not trying to be a downer lol i promise!

That's crazy! It just doesn't make any sense why YOU should pay an adoption fee when the shelter didn't do anything for the dog. The fee makes sense because the shelter gave the dog shots, food, etc...
But without that there's NO reason why they should take the dog away from you.

It was actually a rescue in the case of Ellen's "fiasco." While some shelters have a return clause on their adoption contract, most don't. Rescues on the other hand, almost always have a return clause stating that if the owner can not or will not keep the pet, it must be returned to the rescue for placement.

A responsible rescue should have this clause. In most cases, the pet has been in a foster home that has come to know the quirks (good and bad) of each pet. They should know what type of environment best suits the foster animals in their care.

Not saying this is what exactly happened in the Ellen case, but most small dogs are not good with children. Even well-behaved children sometimes handle pets roughly, parents don't always supervise, etc. Smaller dogs are typically more fragile. Because of this, rescues don't usually place small dogs into homes with young children. Some rescues have rules such as no children under five, while others have a higher age of 12, for instance.

When a person adopts from a responsible rescue group, they are screened--application process, home-check (to make sure have a safe yard and home and to see how the family interacts with said animal), vet references, etc. A lot of effort goes into placing animals into homes that match each pet's needs. What happens when the adopter gives the dog away to someone who doesn't meet the guidelines of the rescue? The guidelines are there for a reason, and while each case should be treated individually, IMO, it isn't always possible.

However, the rescue in Ellen's case was NOT responsible. Heck, they adopted out an un-neutered dog, and that's only the beginning.

Sorry for the book--just thought I'd explain why *some* pets are reclaimed by rescue organizations (and even a few shelters) after being rehomed by original adopters... :D

The rescues around here are literally overflowing and dogs are being put down daily. The one Ginger came from is just a regular city , or rather town shelter. I'm not too concerned about losing her as I would find it HIGHLY unlikely to happen in any case. They don't do "check ups" after adoption from what I know. Otherwise that gal would have been in trouble for not taking her for another vet check-up I'd think :(

Her last "owner" (the one she was with just over a month) got her October 30th, she was spayed that day and was supposed to go back and have the stitches out after a month according to all her papers that came with her. Well after we brought her home I was scratching her belly and they are STILL in. They look a bit irritated and itchy. Poor baby, we'll be taking her in soon as we can.

Note, that I didn't even get a good luck at these papers until we got home or I would have asked more about the vet they used. Seems the gal wasn't quite upfront with everything about how well she cared for her *sigh*

Also, we still have the gal's home phone info. etc. so we can always call and ask her more about the shelter should it come up.

thats good. in ellen's case she has had numerous dogs and none of them have ever "worked out" so i think thats why they were checking up on her. shes not a very good dog mom. then she used her show as a guilt tactic and went crying on her t.v. show. geezie petes. so unless you have given them a reason i dont think they would. we have a dog and 3 cats. our dog, lucy, is a purebred jack russel who used to be a show dog. then when she got too old to show, they dumped her. so she is terrified of ton of things because they use to abuse her. so i know what you mean by the "quirks" from being mistreated. with any luck your dog will see that youre not like it's old mommy and will actually take good care of her. if youre on here bragging and putting her in your blog then im sure youre going to be an awesome doggie mom. you sound like youll be a good mommy for her :)

I agree.

Also, crazycatlady, thanks, for adopting your furkids, too! I wish more people would adopt rather than buy! :D

Amen to that. Puppies are often VERY tempting, so cute. But if more folks would realize how many dogs AND cats need homes allready.

Oh! I was looking over the papers a lot more (just to be sure, you did make me a bit worried *blush*) and there are no clauses or anything to be worried over that I can note. Which as I said earlier, is usual for our local shelters. They are just happy to get dogs adopted out with all the new ones coming in right now.

That said, it is AMAZING how much she has warmed up to us since Tuesday night. I mean, she was so timid when we took her and now she's so happy and social with us. She's just thrilled when I get home from work, loves her walks, cuddles up on the couch with both of us. She was formerly more warey of men, but seems to be fine with Jon as well.

Sorry if I'm rambling again :) just happy!

Another edit: Does anyone know how much, on average, it costs to get your pet microchipped? It's something we've been thinking about doing after a few months. Just seems safe these days!

Meash, you're so right about the adult animals needing homes. A lot of people don't realize that most adult dogs have grown out of a lot of the puppy habits and are usually easier to housetrain, etc, not to mention that with an adult dog, what you see is what you get size and temperament-wise.

Good deal on the paperwork not having a return clause. Most shelters I know of don't have one either. The only times I've seen it were with rescue organizations rather than municipal shelters and such.

Around here, microchipping is about $40 at most vets, but sometimes you can find a local rescue group or humane society that will have a low-cost vaccine/chip clinic--just be wary of what type of chip you get. I know a lot of people in my area have had problems with 24petwatch chips that are offered at the low-cost places here. Most people I know prefer Avid or HomeAgain since they are most recognizable by scanners in shelters and vet offices. (You wouldn't believe how many pets I've seen that were chipped, but the owners forgot to register the chips in their names with the chip companies either...)

Glad Ginger is really coming around. She sounds a LOT like my Ginger, who was also abused and terrified of men. She loves FH, though. They are so cute together! (Ironically, they have the same birthday, too. LOL)

She wasn't so much "terrified" of men, as just...more warey. At least as we were told and it seemed at first. I can hardly tell because she loves Jon...the two of them just headed to bed and are snoring away without me *chuckle*

We watched my four year old nephew today as well and she was very good with him. If you recall the gal getting rid of her said she barked at her five year old over something and that's when she made the choice to rehome her. Oie, excuses! She's been so happy here!

its always so sad when i see puppies in pet stores and people are standing there holding them going "oh my gosh he's so cute!" and then i look at the dog and he has goop on his eyes, he's coughing etc... makes me mad. im glad people on here realize the importance of adopting!

what always amazed when people drop off animals and the excuses they give. "my cat wont go in the litter box" and thats enough to throw it out?! of course the dog barked.... thats what they do lol. oh well, i guess we can only hope to educate people one at a time :)
