Once we get married we are going to need to get on the same car insurance. I am admittedly naive about things of this nature. I've payed my dad's bills for the last several years and that's about as far as my knowledge goes. My car insurance is currently with Nationwide on my dad's account. Chad's is with his dad's company so that one's out. Should we stay with Nationwide since I will have some history with them or do any of y'all work with a car insurance company that you are particularly fond of?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you are happy with the company you have and you have been with them a while you can get your own account with DH after you are married. You may want to call and get a quote to see if his or your company will be a better deal for you guys.

DH and I got on the same insurance when we moved in together several years ago and then just changed my name on the account when we got married. We have All State and have for years with no problems :)

This may be a silly question, but is it really necessary to get on the same car insurance plan when you're married? Is it a better deal or something?

I think it is mostly if you are going to be driving each other's cars; multi-car/family discounts and such.

I have known a few couples that have had and kept separate policies.

We can't use the insurance Chad's under. It's only for employees of his dad's company. Maybe I'll give Nationwide a call tomorrow.

Yeah the reason that we're getting on the same insurance is so we can both drive eachother's vehicles with no problem. Also, several people say that it will cost less as a married couple rather than both of us having a seperate account.

Typically car insurance does go down once you get married. We got on the same account with State Farm b/c we got a multi-car discount. We also have our homeowners insurance through them so we also have a multi-line discount. We like them, but the thing about it is you have to find an agent you like, b/c the guy Stephen used to go through was awful, but this new guy that is closer to our house is wonderful. I'd say it is your own perrogative as far as having the same insurance or not. Any company will give you a quote for free, so I would suggest calling around. It can't hurt!

We have one car, that is allready in both of our names. So I'm not sure if insurance will change at all once we are married (more than likely not). We are still shopping around for a good plan. Geiko is tempting, less expensive for we poor college kids ;) But are they decent if anything happens? I don't know.

I would call around and get quotes, rates can vary greatly form agency to agency. If you get on the same policy and have any type of home owners/rental insurance than you will get a discount at most places

I'm gonna agree with everyone...call around to different companies..not only do you want the lowest rates but the best coverage for those rates.
Me and Joe use an underwritten company for the time being but we are thinking of switching just cause their Customer Service sucks lol....oppps, can I say that?

Check around with other local companys and see what kind of discounts you can get. I get a discount on my car insurance for being a Framingham State College Alumni

When I was on my parent's car insurance, we had State Farm, then when we got the Cobalt, it was through Farmers that Chris works for. Its cheaper and good, and Chris gets a discount, and then commission ;).

We have Nationwide and love it. Never had any problems with it. Steve's been with them since he started driving. I called around when we were getting married to get quotes and Nationwide came out on top. They offer lots of discounts too.

As for Geico. I have heard a lot of negatives about how they handle actual claims. And after 6 months or a year your low rate goes up. Again, that's just what I've heard from a few people. No experiance myself with the company.

Thanks guys. I didn't get a chance to call Nationwide today, but hopefully tomorrow. Now we're actually thinking of just getting Chad added onto me and my dad's account for the time being. My dad doesn't mind. If Chad gets a new account somewhere and I get added on when we get married we'll have to transfer my car title into my name because I'm just a cosigner on the account. We'll have to get a new loan and blah blah blah.

Steve's on his dads insurance, and i'm on my moms.. Is that going to be a problem after we get married? They are going to charge us WAY too much otherwise.. I'd be ridin' my bike to work, because i wouldn't be able to drive the dang thing, LOL.

I got into a slight fender bender and I have Geico. It was my fault and they handled everything. My insurance only went up by like $2.00 a month since then too, but there was no large claim, the other guys bumper needed to be replaced.

As a lesson learned, if you are in the state of Washington and you even slightly think you might be injured, make sure you file a police report, the other guy couldn't claim any medical because he didn't file a report.
