View Full Version : Blow dryer or straightener?

OK, I tried looking this up in google, but either I don't know the search term to use, or there's just no answer out there.

Which is more harmful to hair: blow drying or straightener? I like to blow dry my hair because it looks more full and takes away the frizz, whereas if I do nothing, my hair is a complete mess. But I take my showers at night, because I just can't wake up early enough to do it in the morning, and sleeping with a wet head leads to major kinks in the morning... so I just usually straighten.

BUT... if it's healthier for my hair in the long run (because, as you all understand, I DO want my hair to look really dang good in about eight months), then I'll just nix the straightening, re-wet my hair in the morning and use a blow dryer.

What do you think? Can you find any info on this for me? Or just opinions... thanks!

I think it depends on the straightener and the blow dryer! Also one's hair!

This doesn't really answer your question, but...fyi I use both but before I do I spray this spray by Tresemme that acts as a heat protecter, and it really does work. You can't find it at almost any store like Target, Walmart etc. If you can't find a true answer which it will be hard to, I would use this product to protect ur hair ; ) good luck!

From my understanding.... a straightener is better because it is gentler on wet hair and the temp can be controlled easily.

With a blow dryer you are more apt to try and comb your hair while its wet and wet hair is fragile hair. With a straightener you just run it through even though it can be snarly or kinked but then once it is more dry you can start to brush it.... Also I heard that ceramic straighteners are good for your hair.... I got mine from WalMart for 20 bucks... I believe its a remington... and it is AWESOME!

Here are some articles I hope they helped...

Those are on blow dryers...

Hairboutique.com has a lot of articles but was having a hard time finding ones for irons....

I am so going to be bald at 40!!! I have colored my hair for over 10 years, and I blow dry and either use the straightner or hot rollers EVERY MORNING!

Yes you can straightn your hair when its wet, however I wouldn't use any kind of straightner, Remington makes one called "wet to straight" it cost $20-$30 sepending on where you buy it. But I WARN u be careful with these, they can burn your hand. On the top of the straightner there are steam holes, and its hard to avoid putting your hand above them, and when you do it with your hair wet, the steam is Very hot!!! I stopped using mine b/c I got a better straightner from Sallys beauty, but I loved the Remington one, I used it for atleast 2 years ; )

I don't straighten when it's wet... but it seems like when I straighten for a few weeks in a row (which I do because I do it every morning before work), my hair seems like it has more split ends.

This past summer I didn't do anything to it, just put it up in a ponytail every day, no blow drying or straightening (I get lazy on summer break!), and my hair didn't have many split ends at all.

I guess maybe I should call and ask some professional hair stylists?

Thanks for all your advice!

Hey, if you do call around, let us know! I usually blow dry or just let it go on lazy days... but I wonder what's best.

I really think the answer depends on how much heat you are using. I am gonna be bald too!
