Actually, yeah. Under your User CP. Go to Options and look for default thread subscriptions and change it to do not subscribe, then you might want to delete any subscriptions you already have.

Of course if you use gmail, and these come in close enough together it looks like 1 message per thread in your inbox because gmail thinks they belong to the same conversation, pretty cool.
