wedding unity candle service

what the heck is it? i've never seen it before. the reason why i ask is because the hotel where the wedding will be offers it but i have no clue what it's for. can someone explain to me what happens, what i'm supposed to do, and the meaning and purpose of the unity candle service?

the unity candle service is the combining of two families into one, or the joining of two people into one soul together.

for us it was the combining of our two separate families (we each had children from previous marriages) into one family. we had our children light the tapered candles then my hubby and i lit the inside (unity) candle together.
