View Full Version : So Difficult!

I had no idea it would be this hard to find a tailor/seamstress whoever to make my custom wedding dress for me.

I know a LOT of people who would be willing and able if I'd gone with a Renaissance Theme dress. Of course, I myself would be able to make my own dress, in that case!

But because I'm going with a replica (more or less) of an Edwardian dress, all of a sudden I have no resources.

And the person who did my gown the last wedding I can no longer afford, which is a bummer because she's FABULOUS and I know she'd be able to re-create this for me in a heartbeat.

*sigh*

I'm starting to get worried that I won't be able to find somebody to build my dress for me.

But all these modern white, poofy gowns are simply not me!

When I was looking for a 30's/40's replica dress, someone suggested talking to a costume designer. Are their any theatre companies or costume shops near you? I know you don't want a costume but perhaps they would know of someone to help you out.

Yep, that's exactly what I'm doing, Serendipity! I do theatre for a living -- I'm a stage manager -- and so far I've put out five calls to costumers that I've worked with and admire . . . and who I know can give me a quality product, and so far only one has returned my email, and she said 'I can't do this for you, sorry!'

And of course, there's the little fear that since they're costumers and not actual tailors, that they'll build me a *costume* and just instinctively take the little shortcuts that are ok for stage but are absolutely not allowed in my wedding gown! Like, one of the main features of this gown is it's corset. I want the corset to be functional, not just *look* like a corset. To really have an underskirt and an overskirt, not just a panel sewn in to *look* like it . . . that kind of stuff.

I don't want to wear a costume, I want to wear a wedding gown.

I think I may go back to my original seamstress and see if I can't work out a payment plan or something. . .she and I are still friends, even after all this time, and her quality is the highest I've ever seen.

You and I obviously have great minds, Serendipity :) :)

Or ................

One of our local distributors is a bridal shop. The lady that fixed my dress was their seemstress.

Go into your local bridal shop, and ask for the name of their seamstress. They might not be too forthcoming with her name if they think you need her to make your wedding dress but if you told them that it was to alter a dress you already have or, to hem your pants ...... they might just give up the info.

That's a great idea, Serendipity, I hadn't thought of that!

I'll have to look into it.

Try getting ahold of someone at Juliusbridal.com . I know that they are doing my 18th century style wedding dress for a fairly decent price, as well as the bride's maids dresses. From what I've seen and heard they'll replicate almost anything at a fair price :).
