After fighting with my FMIL (see thread hello?! these are my kids..) and then fighting with my FH about fighting with his FMIL I get a call saying my son (the 3 yr old) was on his way to the hospital by ambulance. Turns out my FMIL's dog attacked him.
After 8 hours in the hospital today he got 20 stitches in his head.
I have never been so scared in my life. Thank god it wasn't on his face, or his throat, he could have died.

Holy Cr@p! I am not going to make it worse by asking more questions or stating my feelings about dogs and children; but wow ... glad he is ok though!
I don't think I'd leave either of my kids alone at the in-laws anymore.

Yeah, next Christmas my FH and I were actually going to buy the boy's a dog. Our feelings have definately changed on that.
My FMIL is actually getting rid of both dogs now.

Yeah, next Christmas my FH and I were actually going to buy the boy's a dog. Our feelings have definately changed on that.It is probably best to wait until the boys are older and/or you can put the time in to train the dog and teach the kids how to love and respect the dog. I would NEVER leave small children and dogs unattended.
My FMIL is actually getting rid of both dogs now. This is sad too, it is usually not the dogs fault :( I hope they at least try to find a good home for them or at least a rescue and not just dump them at the pound or something.
Sorry this happened to you!

An awful situation to be sure.
We got our first "family" dog when I was three and my brother was two, actually. He was a beagle, so smaller. And we never had issues, but parents were always there to train him how to be around us and us around him for that matter.
If a dog was not raised around children, totally different story. Yikes. I'm so glad he's ok!
Poor baby. Hopefully he doesn't develop a fear of dogs now. That would be sad. I hope that he heals quickly.

I hope the little guy is okay- Unfortantley its something that is scary and happens when we least expect it by the dogs we least expect-
Ill say a prayer for you and remember- no matter how bad it seems RIGHT NOW- he is okay- 20 stitches is better then 120 and he can breathe on his own - Meaning- its not as bad as it could be, please count your blessings and give the little guy a hug from all of us girls ..
AND HUGS TO YOU!!!

Hopefully I never have to go through this again. It was so scary, the toughest part was trying to keep myself from crying because he was so scared, and in pain.
I don't think he'll end up being scared of dogs because he didn't want to come home with me last night. He wanted to stay at my FMIL's house and the dogs are still there (obviously they're no where near the kids now). I couldn't tell him no because he would end up getting so upset and I didn't want to make matters worse.
The doctors were awesome with him. I'm so pleased with the hospital.
Thanks everyone for all your support. You guys are amazing.
I have a large scar on my face from a dog bite when I was a small child. It was our own dog that had been abused as a puppy before we got him. My biggest fear with my own children was that one of them would be bit, but thankfully none of them were.
On the flip side of that...I do love dogs..but only dogs that I know. As most of you know, we have a dog...but we are VERY careful that she isn't left alone with Kaelie. She loves Kaelie and they do play together..but you never know when something could happen.
My boss' granddaughter was bit by her (the boss) dog a couple of weeks ago. She will have a scar on her lip. I was very angry because the dog has nipped at the child before and they hadn't done anything about it. I don't understand people that don't do things when the dog gives warning that they don't like small children. :hothead: :hothead: :hothead:
Hopefully your little one will be great and not afraid. I sure hope things turn around with your FIL's.

They were put in a bedroom.
He's doing better. He doesn't want to eat much, or take a bath (which we have to get done because his bite needs to get cleaned the doc said). And he's still moving and talking a little slow. I think it's because of the meds they gave him to sedate him. (They had to give it to him twice because he's a fighter! :) ). He's really quiet lately, and it breaks my heart. He's the type of kid you can't keep still usually. All he wants to do is lay in my bed and watch cartoons.
