i was also wondering if anyone is going to do the cupcake wedding cake thing? I am trying to find ways to save money, and thought this idea was super cute!
I am in a super planning mood and i am trying to take advantage of it:rassberry: I am going to school right now too....so i am trying to get most of this stuff out of the way! Well...any ideas will help :whoohoo:

Well, I'm not doing a cupcake cake...but I AM doing a cupcake tower. I CAN'T WAIT!! (I'm in love with cupcakes...don't tell my FH.)

And yes, it will save you some money! Even if you get them at a big time bakery, you will probably still save on that vs. a fancy wedding cake. Plus, who doesn't like cupcakes!? The possibilities are ENDLESS!

:whoohoo: Yay for more cuppies!

I saw the idea and thought it was adorable! I called it the wrong name earlier:D, it is called a cupcake tower, just couldnt think of the name. Are you making the cupcakes yourself? Let me know if oyu come across any cute ideas :whoohoo:

Yeah, I'm doing the cupcakes myself. (I bake about 4 dozen cupcakes a week, btw! LOL)

I really have no idea how I'm going to decorate them for the wedding yet, though. Nor do I even know what flavors. I'll probably pick 3 or 4 different flavors and then decorate each flavor differently.

Here's the "wedding cupcakes" search results on Flickr. There are some amazing ideas out there!

 Elizabeth, you flatter me so!

Smileyone, if you're looking to do the cupcakes yourself, I highly suggest getting either "Crazy About Cupcakes" or "500 Cupcakes". Fabulous books! :whoohoo:

Also any of the "Whimsical Bakehouse" books will give you great decorating tips! I just got a copy and am drooling all over it!

I heart the idea of a cupcake tower. I struggled with the idea, but alas I couldn't fight the desire to have a traditional cake. Awesome idea though. I love it!

Ok so I was looking into this some more. Looking for some examples that might work for our theme, my favorite so far is this one:

I also came across this which I like:

And if I could come up with a way to get these two into our theme colors and such *ponder* :

Had to toss that one out there just because I thought it was marvelous! And I like the towers with the mini "cutting" cake on the top that can also hold your topper.

Showed these to FH and he liked the idea (especially the cheaper part :rassberry: ). So it may very well be cupcakes for us :o!

One question though, I'm wondering how it would be cheaper for bakeries. Don't they have to put more work into doing a design on a hundred or more cupcakes vs. just one cake?

Sadly, it's too late for me. I already had a cake.

I also had petit fours ....in hindsight, I should have had a gazillion petit fours + made a tower instead. There wasn't a crumb left. They were pricey but even still, they wouldn't have cost as much as the cake.

Well, it is cheaper for one because it's not a WEDDING cake. Haha tack the word wedding on there and the price triples. But cupcakes are usually cheaper. Like, I know that Sam's club does 3o cupcakes for about $12. I, personally, am doing cupcakes with the idea of having a top "cutting cake" and I love it! Plus, with cupcakes we can buy a huge thing of beverage napkins super cheap andnot near plates and forks, etc for the cake which also saves money. :) I"m toying with making my own too but I would have to serious look at possible cost savings....

I wouldn't want to stress myself out making 100+ of them! Will have to find a local bakery that does "Fall Cupcakes" though ;)

It really doesn't take much time to make 100 cupcakes. It SOUNDS like a lot, but it's really not.

Most recipes make 2 dozen cupcakes. One batch takes about 30 minutes (10 min to mix, 20 min to bake). So if you make 4 batches, that's only 2 hours for 96 cupcakes.

Plus, you can freeze them to keep them fresh until you're ready for them (wrap each one in plastic wrap and then put in an air-tight container).

Of course, then there is icing/decorating them, but you can do that a day or two before and they'll be fine. Just put them in containers to take them to the reception place and they'll stay just fine. (They sell big cake boxes at Michael's for $1.20 each)

Just wanted to throw that out. :frogg:

I know it wouldn't technically be that much time for the baking. But I am a perfectionist when it comes to decorating, seriously, haha. I used to make some pretty intricate cupcakes a few times a month for all the kids at my church back home, and I recall all the fuss that went into it. I just really don't want to be worrying over the little things like that when I'll have to cram preperation pretty much into a week of offtime between work and school.
