I posted this in the cake topper thread but I wanted to post here too ...
I MADE my cake topper this weekend and I am so proud of myself.
I have been searching on the internet to purchase those Monogrammed Letters and I fell in love with the ones that had swarovski crystals on them ... but the cheapest I found was like $75-$100 for 3 letters. That was just too much to pay to me! So I went to Michaels and made my own. (By the way ... my colors are Pink and Black)
Materials used:
* Precut Wooden Letters from Michaels ($3.50)
* Black Paint ($1.00)
* Clear and hot pink swarovski crystals (approx. $7.00)
* Special glue ($3.00)
They look AWESOME in real life... I am no photographer so the pics are not that great but here they are:
This is the one that I liked but it cost $110.00

This is the one that I made and it cost approx. $14.50!

I also made bracelets for my BM's! (Inspiration from Firespirit who is just so dang crafty- Thanks!!) There dresses are strapless, black, column style with a pink sash that knots in the back and trails to the floor. This will be part of their BM gift. I got the beads and toggle clasps on sale so each bracelet cost me roughly about $1.00. (I am not good with the camera so they are kind blurry and small)

This week/upcoming weekend I am tackleing the wedding veil like Danielle made - she is my inspiration for all my DIY's! LOL:frogg:

Wow!! Those are awsome!! You did a fantastic job. Keep up the good work. If you can do all that, you'll be able to make the veil with no problem. Good luck!!

Looks great!
Hmm I just had a thought. Are you going to attach some sort of metal rods into the bottoms to poke into the cake? Just make sure that the beautiful things can actually stand up on the cake!

Veryy good point - and I am going to just hot glue these plastic thingys to the bottom and they will stick down in the cake.

Where did you end up getting your flatbacks from? The place I've gotten my crystals from doesnt' have flatbacks in the sapphire color.

I got them at Michael's craft store here. I even bought this smoldering gun thingy that is suposed to glue them on whatever - but it just melted the entire stone so I took it back and used craft glue and a toothpick to place them.

I've been wanting to make our caketopper, too. I couldn't believe how much they were selling for when I first started looking for designs. They are outrageous, especially for caketoppers. LOL
I'm going home to Augusta this weekend and will definitely be stopping by Michael's. I think DIY projects just make things even more meaningful. I can't remember now if you posted it or not, but how big are your letters?

The "D" is the largest one... and it is pretty thick which I liked. But they have all kinds of shapes and styles. I will have to measure them though b/c I really have no idea off the top of my head. I wanna guess that the "D" is about 5" tall and the "L" and the "B" (the smaller ones) are about 3" tall. The smaller ones are not very thick and are skinnier. It was surprising how easy it was too make! When I was describing them to all my friends ... they were being "fake nice" but when I showed them, they were all like, "OHHH WOW! Those look great! I was worried!" Ahhhh, you gotta love your best friends, as 2 faced as they may be! LOL

Thanks.
I showed them to FH, and he is all excited. He knew I was searching for letters in different styles. I like doing crafty stuff, especially when it saves lots of money. LOL He is all about helping me with the letters and the candles. :whoohoo:

What size and how many crystals did you need? I've been trying to find the best deal.

I wish I had an exact # and size - When I get home tonight - I will measure and count to let you know!
But I got the crystals on sale at Michaels - I think it was 10-15 per pack for $1.00. The clear crystals I bought are a little bit bigger and I paid around $3.00-4.00 for about 50-75 of them.
(I could totally be off on this count - so I will let you know when I get home today.)

Oh, I didn't mean for you to go home and count all of them. I didn't know if you had a general idea or not on how many you bought/used.
I'm glad I can get them at Michael's, though. Statesboro is horrible when it comes to shopping (among other things LOL), so shopping for DIY and wedding supplies has been tricky so far.

Hahahah this is awesome, I think you did such a great job you've encouraged more of us to do this. I'm planning on making a C and an R for Carrie and ryan and putting those together with the heart I already made. I don't want to use his last initial because it's R and that might look unbalanced.

Hey Lauren, want to make mine too? LOL. I know exactly the ones that you based yours on... I was looking at those too! But they are so expensive. I think I need to take a trip to Michael's and try to make my own.

Ya know, I bet you could make some decent money making those and selling them on Ebay . . . Haha

Someone else mentioned that but they are soooo easy to do ... I would feel like I was ripping someone off! Hmmmm... but I guess it is worth a try. I might put the feelers out there and see who bites!

Woo hoo, I already got the letters from Michael's and spraypainted them silver. I just ordered the crystals (Michael's didn't have the colors I've been using). So once those come in I'll be able to put it all together. I ended up getting the hot-fix crystals and the tool to attach them because I tend to be a disater area around glue. :bbredface:
